If you have an Audible membership or are on the free trial (i.e. 90 days free + £10 Amazon voucher for Prime customers), go to My Account, click 'Cancel Membership', click 'too expensive' and then you will be asked: would you like 1 free Audible credit as our gift to you, or to cancel your membership? Click 'bonus credit' and it's yours! You can redeem your credit and then repeat this process to cancel your membership should you wish, or remain a member!

I'm getting:
Wait! You still have 2 credits!
If you cancel, you'll lose your credits. Don't forget, each credit can be used for any audiobook in our store.
Obviously I didn't continue as I don't want to lose my credits.
what am I doing wrong?

There's another screen if you choose to continue to cancel. It asks for your reason to cancel - then you choose too expensive from the dropdown - and then it offers you the credit. If you haven't got your reason to cancel to appear, you haven't proceeded to cancel enough

Just to be clear, do you do this through Amazon, or the Audible account? Wife is trying this, and it doesn't appear to be working?

Audible seem to be really generous with cancellation offers, perhaps they just realise that £7.99 for one book a month is a bit pricey so there have to be regular incentives to keep people subbing. I was on a 90 day free trial and managed to get a £10 audible credit during my trial (when they started doing the better free trial with £10 amazon credit). Then they took a £7.99 when it still showed I was in trial so I informed them and got it back plus another 90 days free as an apology, so total of half a year free plus £10 credit!
Great selection of books too, nice easy to use interface and simple app, Audible is actually a lot better than I imagined before subscribing....

What about pre-orders? Don't want to lose those if it doesn't offer credit. Is there a final confirmation after choosing 'too expensive' before it actually cancels?

Can I still access books I've downloaded using credits once I've cancelled my membership?

I don't like that you can't cancel without spending tour credits first, as I don't know what books I want yet :disappointed:

Even though I'd been a member before a few years back, in May they let me take out a free trial again so got 1 book, then I went to cancel and they offered me another to stay, then I cancelled. Then O2 had a trial 3 months for 1.99pm so took that out (not an O2 customer) then after them 3 months I went to cancel and they offered me 3.99pm for 3 months so did that. Then seen this post and tried again just on the off chance and they offer me £10 credit to stay. WINNING.

I did this a few days ago. I can confirm it works and I have since successfully cancelled my membership. I was on the 3 months free trial. I selected "too expensive" as reason for leaving.

No, it offers the complimentary credit before you finalise your cancellation, it's like a 'don't click that confirm button' offer.

I tried but I've already taken a free credit before so it appears that it only works once.
