Free and unlimited VPN, with no subscription needed. Much better than their Opera Max application as this allows you to choose regions such as USA, Canada, Germany, Singapore, and Holland.
very easy to use and appears to work as expected (default is a netherlands ip). no noticanle lag as a result of using vpn.
previously tried cyberghosts android vpn and struggled to get it to work in any useful way (seem to remember was kicked out of vpn when the screen locked). no issues like that with this so far.

Games can be cheaper from different regions so this could allow you to purchase games etc from other countries and bypass their region locks. I guess that and other naughty things.

What does Shakira have to do with Opera VPN? She's good looking but not a fan of hers.

Not many questions being asked on why they're providing this service and app, which will cost them money to run, free of charge.
If you're not paying for a product, the strong likelihood is that you are the product. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they were flogging off users' browsing data.

Hasn't Opera been sold to the Chinese?

Indeed. Data = money.

if you download it you will see that app itself has ads in it....
also they might not make money now but will introduce "other" chargeable services, look at facebook didn't make a penny in the first 10 years

No substitute for a paid VPN , They are clearly using customers data to help pay for their servers as in app ads will not cover the cost and more importantly it falls under the legal jurisdiction of Canada which requires Internet services to retain access logs of customers in order to process piracy notices. Meaning VPN users privacy is non existent.Might be ok for watching netflix or iplayer from another country but i would not use it for anything else.

Opera Software were sold to a Chinese consortium earlier in the year.
Folks may want to read the Wiki entry on one of the new owners Quhoo360 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qihoo_360 and decide if they want to funnel all their data through a company who's main revenue stream is from advertising and had a checkered past in terms of software, from submitting someone else's AV engine for testing, and then using a different engine in the software sold to users, or the "360 Secure browser" that is reported as being difficult and confusing to uninstall, and will create pop ups that try and scare users into not using any other browser.

Ni-hao. Large Chinese tech companies if not already a front company, have ties to party cadres or pay dues etc. They also have to give any requested data to their intel and security apparatus which is vast, digitised and employs many millions. Their internet intel/security personnel alone is estimated to be a million+, probably a few million. China is a modern tech security state. From your email and other logins, they will know your identity and secret browsing, all goes into your single indexed file. Have fun. Zai-jian. :sunglasses:
