Having read the dead-tree version of this I can confirm that yes it is hard going as it is not written in the story-like style of LOTR or the Hobbit, but with perseverance, it is worth it as there are some excellent tales in this book. Essentially, it amounts to the equivalent of the old testament for the LOTR story. Nice to see it free now.

Heat added, I've wanted to read this for ages and didn't think to look at archive.org.
