Needed to refresh my aircon and my local garage wanted to charge £80 for the service. Went online to see what I could find and came across this. Found another garage willing to do the service for only £20! Same day booking and work done. Fantastic! Thought I'd share for anyone looking to do minor repairs, as it definitely helped me save.

£20 for a service?! What they do, wash it and put in an air freshener?

Good rule of thumb for air con testing is open the black cap on the refill which is the low pressure side not the high pressure side which is larger, it’s like a tyre valve so just press it gently to see if there is any pressure, if there is no pressure then it’s likely that it has a hole in the condenser rad, you don’t usually get many problems elsewhere.
If you have pressure that’s good as it usually means just a top up will do to get it working, there are home kits to do this, I use the Halfords one which is good, I had three cars to do so was cheaper for me this way as I had to replace the rads on both my cars.
When testing don’t put your face over the valve or you will get a face full of oily gas…….although harmless it’s not nice, and no you won’t freeze your fingers off like some people say that’s BS from people that don’t know what they are talking about.
Done with the engine switched off, even if the pressure is only slightly low it will stop working, I’ve working on many old cars and not seen a seal dry out yet, those little green O rings last for donkey’s years, it's usually a hole in the rad or the compressor fails in my experience.

Thanks OP, gives local options to consider in the wider decision making progress.

It depends where you live for price. I think it is a good idea. I found other websites doing similar.
London: Both rear wheel bearings up to £300. Cheapest about £273.
S. Wales: Cheapest £192.
I can get both my disk and pads done on my Citroen C3 for £80 in my local London garage!
Always check your local garage first.

At least you have a good idea of the costs involved. If the timing chain or other repair is not listed why not ring the garage with the best price/review and ask THEM to quote for the non-listed job.

Don't recommend them. There's a lot of cowboy's on the site. I used them for a clutch replacement on my semi-auto 107 the guy fitted the clutch but after it wouldn't go into the gear he had it for two months in the end I sold it for scrap as I had enough.
And the guy wasn't the cheapest quote I chose him because in the quote he said it includes gearbox programming so I assumed he knew what he was doing.

Nice idea for a website, but car maintenance is one of those things that I don't want done by the cheapest possible service provider...

The local company it offered me for a service is one I would not touch with a 20ft pole....plus they actually quoted more than my local garage charges !!

Good tool but not sure how accurate it is for pricing? £275 for a service on a fiesta!! Heat added

I like the website. Some good comparison prices for other types of service/garage work for my local area. Will probably try somewhere different next time.

A lot of problems with air conditioning in vehicles could be caused by not running them periodically , especially in the cooler months . Apparently the seals dry out .

Aircon recharge and 'service' is normally £18-21 on Groupon every day in and out

I think "the service" involved was recharging the aircon

for future reference majority of air con problems are caused by failure or leaks so be aware of garages charging you for topping up/refilling air con as problem will still be there so waste of money, get air con checked for leaks before splashing out on refill

Nice one looks very useful, many thanks though it doesn't cover Cam belt and Water pump replacement under the servicing headings...
