Ok, well my version of Thunderbird was being buggy so a week ago I started looking for an alternative (I use various accounts and prefer a email program rather than to access them via the web).

I had used Outlook for a year after my hubby got it free after buying a tablet and 12 months of Office 365 came with it, but that expired at Easter and I moved to Thunderbird. I am aware that it comes with Windows 10, however my laptop doesn't agree with it, so I use Windows 7

I vaguely remembered there was something bundled with my laptop - Windows Live Mail, I remembered it was limited, but at a squeeze did the job without me having to renew a subscription. Anyways, I loaded it up, hooked it up to my hotmail poked around, remembered why I thought it was plop and closed it down and forgot about it.

3 days later I have had an email from Microsoft:

******************************************************
Dear User,

Earlier this year we introduced a new Outl‍ook‍.‍com that provides enhanced performance, security and reliability.

It appears that you are currently using Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to your Outl‍ook‍.‍com account. Windows Live Mail 2012 does not support the synchronisation technologies used by the new Outl‍ook‍.‍com. When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able to send or receive email sent to your Outl‍ook‍.‍com account in Windows Live Mail 2012. Rest assured, you can always access your Outl‍ook‍.‍com account via any web browser at any time, and you will continue to have access to all your data that is currently in Windows Live Mail 2012.
If you currently use Windows Live Mail 2012, we recommend that you switch to the Mail app in Windows today. The Mail app is built in to Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. To begin using it, simply launch the app and add your Outl‍ook‍.‍com account.

If you are using Windows 7, you can upgrade to a newer version of Windows to use the Mail app. If you do not wish to upgrade, you can access your account via a web browser, or you can take advantage of a free one-year subscription of Off‍ice 365 Personal and use Outlook 2016 to connect to your account.* Outlook 2016 works on Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10.

Please take action before 30 June 2016, which is when we’ll begin upgrading accounts that currently use Windows Live Mail 2012.
We recognise that changes like this can be difficult, and apologise for any inconvenience this causes you. If you have more questions, please find answers to common FAQs in this help article, or you can contact Microsoft support.

Yours sincerely,
Outl‍ook‍.‍com team

*********************************

I thought as it mentions new user, which I wasn't directly, just via my hubby getting for our shared laptop. However I followed the link and it downloaded and let me activate no problems.

Windows Live Mail is a default email app, its been around years. To see if you have it on your PC go to search and type Windows live mail, if you have anything older than Windows 10 you probably have it

Eligible Windows 10 users who click "Upgrade" on their OneDrive client will be pointed to a web page where they may get the 1-year trial offer as well.

I only get 1 month trials, I have a 30GB (5GB free plan) drive 97% full, windows 7 and 10. I have been trying since I first heard about the 12month trial but now I am just waiting and see if it will give it to me when I'm over my account limit when it reverts to 5GB.

I've read that post and it doesn't say how you get it.
Mine explains you need to open windows live app and that will trigger the free offer. It's app based not email domain based.

But if it helps I've added heat to that offer too for you.

24 May 16 #11
Lol seriously? It is not my offer & I was not looking for heat. It is put up once every month by different people, I was just commenting on how fickle people can be by voting it cold sometimes, the month before it went to 430 degrees...

Yeah both of those deals you posted are different to mine. Mine was specific to windows live mail 2012 getting you a free upgrade, these 2 weren't. Same end product but different offers, hopefully by following one of these people will be able to get the freebie, one way or another.

If you work in Education, are a Student, are employed by a large public body or even a private company you may be able to get Office 365 or Office 2016 (effectively the same Software) for free for the duration of your employment, or for very low cost (£9.95). It's probably also worth pointing out, it is perfectly acceptable to have both a personal and work Office 365 account, you can use both side-by-side (e.g. log into both, and access documents from both, and obviously double the amount of OneDrive space you have).

I'll start with education: Teachers and students can get free Office 365 accounts (and pretty much anyone else with an edu/sch e-mail address tbh) IF the IT department has enabled it (it is a free upgrade for most departments, but they must request it). I'm talking about the fully downloadable/5 download Office 365 Plus/1tb OneDrive/etc, almost exactly the same as you'd get if you were paying £79 a year for.

The website is here: https://products.office.com/en-gb/student/office-in-education

It's a bit complicated this, so bare with me. If you sign up with an.edu/.sch e-mail address it will probably grant you an account even if IT haven't upgraded to Office 365 Plus. There is a free tier of Office which anyone can get which lets you open Word documents (etc) in your browser. So don't start partying if you get an e-mail confirming the signup!

When you login to the Office 365 site (sent to you in an e-mail) with a Live account you should hopefully see a link to download Office. The link will say something about you still having 5 activations. If NOT, if it takes you to you to the browser based version of Office, it means your IT department haven't requested the free Office 365 Plus upgrade.

I can tell you from experience, a lot of IT departments simply don't know this exists, so it maybe worth mentioning. It is incredibly simple to sign up, they simply need to request the upgrade from their Volume License software supplier.

Graduates can extend their Office 365 account by a year for £29.99 (here: https://products.office.com/en-gb/student-graduation-offer).

For other organisations. IT can enable a benefit called the Home Use Program ("HUP") by logging into the Volume Licensing Service Center. This enables employees to purchase Office 2016 for £9.95. That is a one off payment of £9.95, for use of Office 2016 for ever (not a monthly charge!!).

The HUP website is: http://www.microsofthup.com/hupuk/home.aspx?culture=en-GB

It isn't as simple as simply trying your work e-mail address unfortunately, as you also need the company program code. If you work in any medium/large company, or in the public sector, it is certainly worth asking IT if they provide this (and if not, if they'd be willing to).

It's probably also worth saying, this can also be enabled by Education establishments and there are genuine reasons why they might want to give employees this benefit over Office 365. So it is worth trying both.

I know this post might seem strange on a thread about "Free" Office 365, but don't forget that Microsoft does all of this because it wants to lock you in to using O365. Once you've used it for a year and have all your documents stored in OneDrive they figure (not unreasonably) that many people will convert into full accounts (£79 per year). By going through these routes you are either getting the full version of Office 2016 for a very small sum (HUP) or effectively locking your employer into worrying about future costs.

Fantastic posting flawed. And for those unfortunate souls who can't take advantage of any of those or the OP's suggestions you can always get a free trial either directly from Microsoft or somewhere like Technology Gurus . They have excellent feedback on Google
Youngy
24 May 16 #15
HUP is a one time purchase but you don't get any upgrades to future versions unlike O365. You don't need the program code so long as the HUP admin has added your company email domain, you can then click 'don't know program code' and they send a link to your work email.

I don't know what qualifies you for the extended trial, I'm afraid.

Just love this new software rental model Microsoft have deployed. Whatever happened to "I paid for it : it's MINE"?
I've just upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows 10 after trying the trial. Truly god-AWFUL software. Any time you attempt to do anything other than the most basic tasks you're either stopped, or it hides anything useful away from you.
As for "tablet mode"...yeah, that's totally why I spent the past 15 years or more learning how to build a PC isn't it - so I can just have it work like a little smartphone with a big screen. And signing in with your e-mail...? Yeah cos that really makes so much sense doesn't it - cos that's totally how you install Windows isn't it - with your e-mail address.
When funding permits I'm going to look around for Outlook 2010 - the last Outlook I think that you didn't have to just rent every year.

As for this gimmick to railroad even more people into biting the Windows 10 downgrade - don't do it.

Let's hope Microsoft make another Windows again one day. Sadly this would seem increasingly unlikely. And no it's not even about "no one likes change" - every previous version of Windows (up to 7 obviously) was at least still WINDOWS - not "oooh, you want it to be just like your tablet, yes?" NO!!!! That's why I have a PC.

26 May 16 #19
You can still do this. Office 365 is the term Microsoft uses for it's software + services subscription. But the software side of Office 365 is simply Office 2016. If you want to own the software without the services you can simply buy a copy of Office 2016! However, the RRP of Office 2016 is £389. Given that they've tended to release a new version of Office every 3 years, £60 a year is actually quite a competitive price (although you're far better off clubbing together with 4 other people and effectively paying £20 a year each for the 5 user "Households" edition of Office 365).

At a consumer level the services are the 1tb OneDrive space, the ability to use tablet/phone versions of the Office suite, 720 Skype minutes per year and, of course, access to the full Office suite. It isn't much, but you'd have paid far more than that just for 1tb of online storage in the pre-cloud era, and as above, it is actually quite an efficient way of paying for the Office suite.

To be quite honest, Office 365 isn't really aimed at consumers. It is aimed at business, and business customers get far more of the "services" part of the deal (depending on the size of the company/number of subscribers), including Office licenses, a hosted Exchange server to handle the company's e-mail, file storage, site hosting, Lync, Yammer, single sign-on/Active Directory federation services, Sharepoint, etc. Most of this is stuff businesses would probably be paying for anyway!

At present, for businesses using Microsoft technology, especially startups/SMEs (that haven't committed to some of these services already), Office 365 is a no-brainier. It scales incredibly well, you can be online with e-mail hosting and the online Office suite for £3.10 a month. Add to this that most business are already using a software subscription licensing model (large organisation don't go out and buy 50 copies of Office at full price, they pay Microsoft a licensing fee based on how many full time employees they have), and you can hopefully see why this absolutely makes sense from a business perspective.

If you don't want to pay, by all means fill your boots with Open Office or Libre Office. They are fine for home use (but good luck opening that Macro-heavy Excel spreadsheet your colleague/boss/customer/competitor just sent you).

That was an interesting read. However, a hell of a lot of us 'consumers' DO want a solid, full functioned e-mail client. The free Windows 10 Mail is AWFUL. You could do far more in Windows Live Mail, which 'oh so coincidentally' will not work after June 30th, by some stunning coincidence around the same time as Windows 10 stops being offered up as a free downgrade. This kind of aggressive railroading is what an awful lot of people even Microsoft fans are despising.

Works fine on my 40" 4k screen. I'm a creative and spend 10+ hours a day in front of it.
Feel free to stay on Windows 7 if you want, I'm sure you're aware that Microsoft has ended mainstream support, so you'll not be protected from new security vulnerabilities most of the time, and on the odd updates windows does give it's not a priority for them any more.
Not a good idea to bury your head in the sand and hope for the best.

Windows as a service is now evolving much faster, gives users the ability to trial new functions and offer suggestions (windows insider), providing fixes quicker, and of course means that you'll never have to pay for another operating system again.
You'd be doing yourself a favour by upgrading ASAP as Windows 10 is only free of charge until July if your windows 7 isn't OEM.

There is no requirement to sign up for a Microsoft account/email, unsure why you think that's the case?

If you do use an MS account then most of your settings can be replicated on other devices. Perfect for people who have a PC and a laptop. Throw in one drive and your files are synced on all devices using that MS account. Same with skype, edge, etc.

I hope you're not using your PC to manage your finances too as there's no longer support for windows 7 against thieves who might want to steal your info.

Good luck!

Thing is, I did downgrade to Windows 10 already - tried it, tried hard to get used to it, but it's utterly appalling as a proper OS. Tablet software - yeah it's great I suppose. But I have my tablet. I do not want my PC I slaved over building and maintaining to run like a little tablet. For some utterly bizarre reason (and this is just a fraction of what to expect should you choose to downgrade) Windows 10 wouldn't even let me save something to my C: (Windows) drive and instead offered to save it to a different drive - kept banging on about administrator privilages (non-issue on Windows 7). So I went back into admin stuff, changed everything to yes, give me permission rah rah rah, tried saving again - it came up with a DIFFERENT excuse as to why I couldn't save there!!!! Utterly infuriating. The attempt at a "start menu" is a complete mess. No Windows loving user wants stupid tiles on a desktop - it simply isn't in any way intuitive - this would tend to be why they re-introduced a start menu after so many people concurred.

End of life is actually 2020 which I spotted whilst looking up solutions to all the basic things Windows 10 stops you from being able to do Vs Windows 7. So I'm much happier now I've reverted back to Windows. If they ever make another version of Windows after Windows 7 - I'd be more than happy to give that a go.
vfxuk
27 May 16 #23
Sounds like you didn't install all the recent updates. Start menu is fantastic now, lots of options added which weren't there in the first release.

God know's what you've done to your hard drive, I have 4 solid state drives and two mechanical, no problems whatsoever. Sounds like you chose to partition the drive during setup rather than a full install. Check your bios settings and see what your default drive orders are, suspect you have the wrong one selected as your first boot system drive.

As a user of windows since 3.0 I can assure you confidently that it's the best version to date, both in speed, usability and system footprint.
http://s33.postimg.org/5w0lsk7nj/capture.jpg

I think it's probably just a case of you not taking the time to use the OS because you're being stubborn, which is also the collective opinion of most IT departments across the globe. Future's now Gramps!
Laura Palmer
27 May 16 #24
Only 3.0 ?? Not DOS or Windows 286 (aka 2.1) ..... LOL . I remember a colleague saying Windows will never catch on at that time.
And yes IT departments like to take their time preening it before jumping in. I must say as a user, this version does get rid of the awful 8 and 8.1, but doesn't yet meet the usefulness of 7 as I'm still getting used to where they moved all the stuff round to....
Elevation
27 May 16 #25
Nah don't worry about my BIOS settings although you do provide helpful solutions even if I don't agree with anything else you say about it. The simple fact was that under Windows 7, saving anything to anywhere was a non-issue. The fact that it now is all of a sudden, when I've changed nothing whatsoever in my settings or partitions (the Windows 10 downgrade process was entirely automated). It really wasn't a case of being stubborn, as I know that Windows 7 won't be seeing DirectX 12. But really for me, for a good few years yet - this is a price worth paying - because I've THAT many games left to complete that only even need DirectX 11 anyway, I shan't be too fussed. I did do all the updates - they've sorted nothing. It was still a mess. Once they stop focussing on everything looking like a tablet - which when you think about it is a bit ironic considering the bottom has fallen out of the tablet market now, I'll hope that they make Windows again. Because this is NOTHING like Windows 98 to Windows Xp, Windows Xp to Windows Vista, or Vista to 7. It's Tablet 10. And I'm not interested in Tablet 10 on my beast of a PC - because it make absolutely no logical sense.
