Having had some friends recently move back to Scotland, we're planning on visiting them this year, so I've been looking for some places to visit for FREE, have found quite a few really decent looking places! I've even found some that my friends didn't know about & since I know we have a fair few members / browsing guests that live in Scotland & lots that visit / holiday there, I thought it might be worth popping a thread up to share those I've found & for anyone else to share those that they know about. So please feel free to add anything you know of, events coming up, that sort of thing!

So far I've just searched Edinburgh, but will be adding more in as I go

I've been looking at all sorts of things / places to visit for free, hope some of the links help!!

Edinburgh Area
Scottish National Gallery of Art
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Scottish National Portrait Gallery
St Giles Cathedral
Royal Botanic Garden Entry to gardens is free, if you wish to go into the glasshouses then they do charge, but the gardens are amazing & we have never been into the glasshouses, plenty to do/see without that.
Carlton Hill Monuments
City Observatory complex (currently undergoing refurb works so only partially open at present & will be fully re-open to the public in 2017
Museum of Edinburgh
City Art Centre
Museum of Childhood
The Writers Museum
People's Story Musuem
Queensferry Museum
Lauriston Castle Gardens Free Entry to gardens, admission payable if you want to go inside the castle
Museums Collections Centre holds the overflow from all the museums

In scotland we drove from glasgow to the isle of skye. Along the way, we stopped at a few places in loch lomond and glencoe, as the views are spectacular.. and of course isle of skye itself has many wonderful places to visit free. But then it is a long drive and you most likely need to spend a night or two over there.

Lovely walk along the Falls of Clyde next to New Lanark. The walk is free and you can wander around New Lanark free of charge however there is a fee if you want to go into the visitor centres. There's also Lanark Loch and Castlebank Park in the area which have lovely walks and are also free. Castlebank Park has a 'Fairy Dell' with beautifully carved benches for the kids

Thanks, living in scotland at the minute and have a lot of weekend getaways planned (via groupon etc) so this will be a good guide to have!

No idea if I'll ever go to Scotland, I want to, especially to see or go on that canal lift which looks amazing, but is not free. Well done for the effort.

We actually have Loch Ness here now?

AND in London/O2 Arena area (and at least a second sighting of the same too, etc?)

Looks like to see Loch Ness now all I'll have to fork out for now is a simple 1 Day Bus Pass to South East London (no National Express/Magic Bus needed again ..... hehehe).

I'm joking!.

I am actually mad curious of this Loch Ness thing though?, I want to see Loch Ness!, lol, (be it in Scotland?, or ..... lol). :-)
