A friend of mine sent me this link, I cannot comment on the quality of the courses as I've never done one with these guys. However, I think it's definitely worth a punt seeing as it's free.

If the link is not working follow this: http://www.shawacademy.com/learning/?product=goodeed&lang=en

I'm not knocking your post at all, woldranger.

As you wanted facts:

1. Taking a Shaw Academy course is a legitimate way to get an NUS card
2. Shaw Academy has been continuously offering totally FREE courses ever since they started (i.e. the "expires in 24 hours" bit is false scarcity and a complete joke.)
3. Most of Shaw's traffic comes from discount sites (like Groupon) where they sell the same courses they give away for as little as a couple of quid
4. None of Shaw's courses are formally accredited qualifications i.e. Shaw creates a course and then provides its own "Diploma", which doesn't actually prove anything at all (it's no different to me giving you a Diploma in advanced neuroscience - it means jack didley)
5. Having said that, Shaw's courses are generally very well put together and a great introduction to a subject. So, you probably will learn useful stuff - just don't think the "Diploma" will look great on your CV (because if anyone does a Google search on Shaw, it may harm you rather than help you)
6. Shaw makes its money by trying to get people to buy a £300 subscription to all its courses. It also makes a huge amount of cash by charging £15+ for a printed (worthless) Diploma (yes, they are selling a pretty piece of worthless paper for £15 - gotta admire that, lol)
7.If you get an NUS card, you can genuinely save a small fortune in discounts and offers etc.

Where have you been?

The NUS is currently haemorrhaging "real" students due to their ultra-left stance. Nowadays, ANYONE can get an NUS card just by choosing a University & course at random and paying the NUS card fee.

The NUS doesn't check applications at all any more, and even accepts cr.@ppy courses like this for an NUS card.

Welcome to today's capitalist student society. Just with an ultra left-wing perspective

Just read this bit of information I found:

You may receive a certificate of achievement - this isn't a nationally recognised qualification - you will not find the qualification on the Ofqual register. Those types of courses will not make you 'qualified' to work in a certain role.

They are mainly useful for people who want to learn something new without committing to a more substantial programme of study - and those types of courses are good for that because they're generally designed to be studied at home, in your own time, without deadlines.

If you're wanting a regulated qualification, you need to look for those which say QCF or NVQ in the title (or that are Alevels or GCSEs depending on what you are looking for).

Don't assume that because a provider has put 'diploma' in the title, that it is a qualification.

If the description says you'll receive a 'certificate of achievement' or an 'award certificate of achievement', it's not going to be a qualification.

If you're unsure, ask the provider for the qualification number and then search for it here: register.ofqual.gov.uk

fantastic find! signed up to two in concurrent months. Apparently is a NVQ Lvl 4 the equivalent to a HND/HNC and you can get the hard copy of the cert if you pay £15 after the final exam!

I'd be very surprised as it does not say an officially recognised awarding body....CPD are not one....most certificates are not worth the paper they are printed on.....company base their qualifications on the type of internal CPD courses run by employers within companies to keep IIP status

except it isn't these aren't even recognised qualifications for these snake oil courses.

These daft courses won't teach you anything , google/youtube couldn't.

They are introductory courses , which your local council/college run for free

This does seem to be an ongoing, stretched out 24 hour offer as it was also posted a week ago http://www.hotukdeals.com/freebies/free-online-courses-limited-time-offer-2435077 The time left never seems to expire, which is a good thing. I am signed up to start the fitness nutrition course on the 1st of May.

As per some of the other comments, their "Certified" and "Diploma in" courses don't result in genuine certifications & diplomas and their counts of "Graduates" implies a level of attainment way beyond the content on offer.

The courses may be good, regardless, but just be wary of the glossy cover.
woldranger
30 Apr 16 #28
Wow, thanks for that.

How about someone reply but with answers and facts please? I've got an NUS extra card through a paid online course I found through this site, but i thought it might be helpful for other hotukdeal members of they could get one through this.

It's not exactly clear when you sign up that if you cannot make the live classes, a recording is available. I hesitated signing up because I can't commit to being free at those times but a recording is great.

Hi, sorry I just realised my comment isn't very clear! What I meant to say is - recordings are available! It would have been nice if that is clear before you sign up, but it only tells you once you've signed up. So, in short, yes, recordings are available!

I enrolled on the photography course and have now finnished it.
I found the course was more for people with a Cannon Box camera. They went all around how each button worked. Moved on to light and darkness. Depth of photos taken.
I have a little pocket camera which I spent a long time choosing and love dearly. They kept on about a more £ Cannon. Bit dissapointed.
When it got to the last weeks they started to promote the paid lessons so I stopped tuning in to the free photography lessons.

Would you recommend it for some one with a Canon camera? I have an expensive canon and lens, after reading the courses mean jack ****, I was a bit disheartened, was it beneficial to learn from or waste of time?

1 May 16 #45
Done a couple of them ( Photography & Photoshop) and signed up for another couple. Ignoring the certificate which appears to be pretty worth worthless (and the selling bit which is in each video) the courses themselves are highly entertaining and you do learn something from them.

Well worth it for free or even at £1.99.

3 May 16 #46
big question, do you get NUS cards from this??? Yes Or No???
kiora_nas to JCP11
3 May 16 #47
Going through NUS the process you eventually get to a "Please enter your Shaw Academy student number"

I can't seem to find any student number on the shaw site, but maybe that's cause the membership type shows up as "Temporary" ?
