I belive the last meeting will be the 18th of June. Then wimbledon football club will move in on part of tbe site (and they say crowds for the dogs are low) and the rest turned into little flats.

Its going to be a loss when it goes, gambling isn't my thing but we go to this and the stock/banger racing maybe twice a year and its always a fun night, kids included.

Thanks for posting Nigel, people need to see that before they go along to these free nights out. Sadly it's the dogs who pay the price ultimately with their lives.
Clearly this track isn't doing so well and is making an attempt to persuade people to attend. Very sad for the poor dogs.

Greyhound racing is cruel, if you don't read the rest of my comment, please know that. This is not a 'howling' night out, this is a night out where dogs are forced to race around the track. You see, it all starts when they are puppies. Some of them aren't fast enough, so what happens to them? Your guess is as good as mine. But thousands of dogs, puppies and adult racing dogs that have 'retired' (on average aged 3) go missing each year. Some of the few very lucky ones will be rehomed but rescue shelters aren't inundated with greyhounds, so where do they all end up? With a bolt gun to their heads? With their ears hacked off? Dumped because they weren't fast enough or broke their leg on the race track. This is very common in this industry, an industry which regulates itself. There to make money, there to 'protect' the greyhounds. Well it can't do both can it? Please read up on this before you go to this free 'howling' night out. The dogs will pay the price. And you bet they die.

Sorry but cannot vote anything but cold on a post related to Greyhound racing

Dogs are treated like they are not sentient beings........I know an owner who always has his dogs euthanased after their racing days are over.....he will not consider allowing them to go somewhere as pets or even to rescue centres......this is very common in the dog racing community

On the flip side, why not read up on the Retired Greyhound Trust, who do a lot to help re-house greyhounds (around 4000 every year)

There are so many "sports" where animals suffer but if they did not exist then the animals would not even exist to begin with as no one would breed them. There are also lots of examples of self regulation; just look at judges/solicitors/doctors and our white collar crime syndicate in London.
Lets just keep things in perspective and get on with life.....it could be worse we could all be living in Syria.

The greyhound action site is not up to date - most links expired/fail, plenty of the usual misinformation and the main problems appear to be unregulated racing as opposed to Wimbledon and the like. Went yesterday and it was really good. Met up with a retirement charity there, stroked some of the old dogs, and put money into the collection buckets.

This ^^ I did the same,they have the old dogs there (albeit 3 of them, perhaps the others are all bolt gunned) and instead of gambling all my money I gave a little to them (not a dog lover if that matters but an animal lover).

Why would you assume that the dogs want to live to be treated like that? Maybe we could cage you for 23 hours a day and kill you when you have lost your 'use'. Well at least you got to live.. What kind of a life is that?! I think you will find that there are people who would still want to have greyhounds as pets too. We just wouldn't breed as many and create such misery for most of them.

Lol do you really believe the dogs raced at licensed venues such as Wimbledon are caged 23 hours a day? Do you think a dog would retain it's fitness/health under those circumstances and be able to compete in races? I'm not saying they are treated as pets and it could be better for them but some of the nonsense spouted by those against it is laughable. If you want to discredit something at least do it with fact rather than utter drivel/emotion.

Dogs are naturally pack hunters and keeping them as pets is not natural....so is also cruel. If the dogs were allowed to hunt naturally in packs, some people would be horrified, then it would be the poor bunny getting torn apart.
Think of the animals used in lab tests....think of the chickens fed on steroids that only live for 6 weeks....think of the cows that have to have a calf every 2 years to stay in milk (what happens to all those rubbish baby bullocks that are no good for meat?).
I think most folk realise that there are far bigger fish to fry (battered of course).

By that logic, keeping any "pet" is cruel as no animals were created to be pets.

Dogs can be fantastic pets because they've been bred for man's requirements.
Same as greyhounds for racing requirements
Rottweilers for guard dogs etc etc etc...

I've been to Wimbledon dogs and I found it felt "not quite right" in my stomach watching it. Wouldn't go again but credit where it's due the deal is a good one if that's your thing.

Very true. Keeping any pet is cruel IMO. But mankind will always make what is best for themselves out of all natural resources.
