Basically you gain points for everything you review of Google's Local Guides program. Make contributions to Google Maps in the form of uploading photos, writing reviews, and correcting mistakes and you'll be rewarded in a number of ways.
Level 1 (0 - 4 points): Enter exclusive contests (think new Google devices!) in select countries.
Level 2 (5 - 49 points): Get early access to new Google products and features.
Level 3 (50 - 199 points): Show up in the Google Maps app with your official Local Guides badge.
Level 4 (200 - 499 points): Receive a free 1 TB upgrade of your Drive storage, allowing you to keep all the stories, photos, and videos from your travels in one safe place.
Level 5 (500+ points): The very top Local Guides will become eligible to apply to attend our inaugural summit in 2016, where you’ll be able to meet other top Guides from around the world, explore the Google campus, and get the latest info about Google Maps. Look out for details early next year.
To get started, sign up for Local Guides, and download the Android or iPhone app. The video below explains how it all works.
Expires after 2 years though, but still pretty good if you have the time. Saves you about 10 quid a month (240 overall) which is what 1TB costs per month on Drive.

Earn points by contributing to Google Maps
Each type of contribution is worth one point, with a maximum of five points per place. For example:
Upload one or more photos to the same place = 1 point
Upload two photos + one review to the same place = 2 points
Write five reviews of five different places = 5 points
Answer one or more local questions about the same place = 1 point
Make one or more edits to the same place = 1 point
Add a new place = 1 point

Has anyone started doing this? I have just gone crazy with about 50 reviews as it works out about £1/review when compared to paying for cloud storage - however I do not yet have any points?

Says somewhere in the blurb it can take up to 24 hours for the points to show. May have been less but I don't remember exactly.

So first you let Google track your movements, then you let them poke around in the the things you upload.
I'm gullible, where do I sign up?

I managed to hit level 4 in the space of a few days, a few reviews, questions, photos and revisions, all in all took less than a week before I received my 1tb storage, and now on the way to level 5!
