Every month this year they're giving away a different Mythical Pokemon. Every one from Gen I-V is included except Deoxys, which was released via it's own event recently anyway. List of Pokemon and the corresponding months is below:
Kick off the Pokémon 20th celebration with the Mythical Pokémon Mew! Mew was the first Mythical Pokémon to be discovered—obtained in the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games. Mew now returns in much the same way as it appeared for players nearly 20 years ago. Don’t miss this chance to get the very first Mythical Pokémon once again!
The Mythical Pokémon Mew will be available at participating GAME stores starting 1 February, 2016. Visit GAME to pick up a code that will unlock Mew in your Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X or Pokémon Y game. Be sure to redeem your code in your game by 31 May, 2016!
The second Mythical Pokémon of the Pokémon 20th celebration is Celebi, who debuted in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver for the Game Boy Color. Now Celebi is once again available for a limited time via Nintendo Network! This Celebi has the same moves as the original Mythical Pokémon and is ready to confound its foes and support its teammates in battle!
Download Celebi via Nintendo Network beginning 1 March, 2016, for your Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X or Pokémon Y game. The Pokémon will be available only until 24 March, 2016, so don't miss this opportunity!
The Mythical Pokémon Jirachi returns in a Nintendo Network distribution event for your Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X or Pokémon Y game! The Wish Pokémon Jirachi first appeared in Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire. Now it returns for players as part of the Pokémon 20th celebration with the same three moves it had when it debuted!
Download Jirachi via Nintendo Network beginning 1 April, 2016, for your Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon X or Pokémon Y game. The Pokémon will be available only until 24 April, 2016, so don't miss this opportunity!

Reminder that if you have a copy of ORAS and a copy of X/Y you can get two codes, redeem one on each and transfer to one cart via Bank. It's unlikely that these will be tradeable.

Do you have to take your 3ds in to get one?

If it's the same as America (which with Mew it is) Darkrai, Arceus and Genesect will also be available at GAME in May, August and November respectively. The rest will be available through the game in the event section.
Of course, it's best to wait for official confirmation, but a rough idea doesn't hurt  Heat!

No, they just have a stack of codes next to the till. You go in and ask for one. Simple as that  I did it with Sludge Bomb Zoroark the other month.
Celebi is available via WiFi in March and Jirachi in April
Can't believe I'm going to have a legitimate Mew after all these years.

Tell me about it mate, back in 99 i had to use a gameshark on blue. I hope they have enough to go round

I used a Gameshark to get Mew on Yellow way back when. I have a legit Mew from the event they did during the, I think, Soul Silver distributions.

Both Game stores near me print the code on a receipt from the till, so no danger of them running out. If a local store claims they have, ask if they have the ability to do it this way.

My seemingly down-to-Earth mate revealed to me the other day that he'd got a proper legit Mew via the Pokémon bank.
How do you get it? Just catch 1000 Pokémon and they'll give you one.
A THOUSAND.

Awww. I still have the Mew I got from a Toys R Us event in 2007! I've just traded it (along with all my other legendaries) from game to game, up to Omega Ruby. More copies of legendaries are always welcome!

Usually, although some off the smaller locations which are part of other, larger stores (like the one in Hamleys, for example) may not participate.

Should be every store. Not all stores actually get the cards (mine never seems to have them in Kendal). Instead they simply print a receipt with your code.
