Pieced together by /r/steamsaledetectives comes a hidden badge and 100XP for your steam account. To get yourself the secret Red Herring badge simply do the following -

1. Visit the Ikaruga Steam store page and login.
http://store.steampowered.com/app/253750/
2. Type search on your keyboard and press ENTER.
3. Type 1v7531 in the popup window and press ENTER.
4. Et Voila...a new profile badge!

What's the point of collecting badges? Just to say that you've got it? Is it a way to keep you involved in the Steam ecology? Just seems to serve no purpose for me.

You get items when you unlock a badge. Emoticons, Steam wallpapers, account specific upgrades, discounts on games etc. etc.

XP gives levels.
Higher level grants marginal increases in card pack drop rates.
Cards can be sold for pennies.

So not *completely* without worth.....
But picking money up off the street is a far better investment of time.

Tried it last night and no dice. Even used the code injection from Reddit and although it worked, no badge unlocked.

Would not work if i just used copy/paste for code but as soon as i entered it manually it then worked fine .

It's just a bit of fun. Some people like to collect things, or some will do it to add extra features to their profile. Not really pointless if the person collecting the badges gets some enjoyment from it. It can be done for free as well.

After a little investigation on own it looks like I'm right. Other than being able to show off the badge it's pretty pointless. Kind of reminds me the quote you get when you die in a CoD game.

On the first day of the sale there was a code on the front screen and when you clicked on the client popup box that appeared after logging in that took you to a special enter code box. This gor you a shiny holiday background.

*EDIT*
I just noticed this doesn't give a new badge but did in fact used up my Holiday Sale 2015 set, I was 3 short of completing the Holiday badge and when I used this method it used up the 8 cards I already had in this set and gave me the red herring badge instead.
I am now looking for another 8 cards to complete the holiday set for level 1 :disappointed:
