thanks you guys good ideas might just try the single crochet trick..aldi pound stores have reasonably good acrylic yarns and wilko but not the best quality. ..I went to the John Lewis boxing day sale but they were still too pricy for 25-50 gm yarns...and with my recent mess with this blanket I don't want to invest anymore in yarn until I sort this out

poundland has 3 for 2, and lots of colour & some are glittery too!
not the best quality, but not the worst either.
good for little projects! (:

stick two single crochet on the shorter side in as many holes you need until it ain't lop sided anymore... Don't do more than 2 though might look weird.
if you want perfection you'll have to undo. maybe try to figure out where you went wrong and see if you can be bothered going that far back?

I'm afraid I've missed the last stitches and my blanket edges have gone shorter and I now have slanted edges that don't meet when you fold the blanket. .... :disappointed: I am also 65% done with the blanket. ..I really don't want to rip it all !!!

Don't know if this is of any use, i found it on a forum - "no, you really can't fix it now. Ripping back and re-doing is something we all have to do---just think of it as another skill you are learning!
You need to count your stitches on every row, be sure you have the same number of stitches in every row. put a marker in the first and last stitch of each row, so you can be sure to stitch in them on the next row.
be sure you don't skip stitches, or put a stitch in between two stitches. be sure you only put one stitch in each stitch."
