Experience the classic space trading game, Elite, as released on the BBC Model B in 1984, by Ian Bell and David Braben.
Available for download
From the original box description: "Command your Cobra space ship in a fantastic voyage of discovery and adventure, a supreme test of your combat, navigational and entrepreneurial skills. Trade between countless planets, using the proceeds to equip your ship with heat-seeking missiles, beam lasers and other weapons - corporate states can be approached without risk, but unruly anarchies may be swarming with space pirates. Black market trading can be lucrative but could result in skirmishes with local police and a price on your head!
However you make your money, by fair means or foul, you must blast onwards through space annihilating pirate ships and hostile aliens as you strive to earn your reputation as one of the Elite!"

I found it was quite easy with the Acorn analogue joy sticks as they were non-centering so you could fine tune the roll to match the space station spin, then leave it and just vary the trust. I did buy an autopilot but on more than one occasion that failed and crashed me into the space station.

I find it crashes on hyperspace. Had the same problem several years ago when I tried this emulator on my old pc.

Novice guide to docking...
Fly toward planet until you have space station lock.
Rotate to bring space station into side view.
Fly until the front of the station is flat & square in side view, then come to a full stop.
Turn until facing station in front view.
Approach and match rotation.
If completely messed up, fly some distance away. set your heading on a line between planet & station, repeat the side view lineup, slower if you are close

I could never dock my craft. Had to get a friend to do it once and buy an autopilot.

Some things are best left to nostalgia. How are strobing white lines on a black screen going to look in 2016?!?

Not everyone plays games for the graphics, gameplay is still addictive and fun and it's free.

BBC micro version including Beebem emulator, for many, this is THE classic version.
There is also a good PC remake https://www.christianpinder.com/games/ - Elite Newkind - at one time, withdrawn, but now available again.
For the old Elites, there has been an uneasy relationship between Ian Bell and David Braben.

Awesome. Loved this on my Amiga, and subsequently UAE. Been looking at Elite Dangerous for a bit, but some gripes and a computer that probably won't run it have prevented me!

Played lots and lots of games. This is still my favourite game ever for the time it was released. Would still hold its own for me for addictiveness.
