This app uses your phone's processing power while charged and plugged in. Instead of leaving your phone on idle, it will be used to help cure diseases such as cancer.
Your phone is used to help solve calculations, and the results are sent over your WiFi connection to Stanford University
Being going for quite a long time now, but I hadn't seen it on HUKD before.
From app description:
"You can take part in the search for groundbreaking cures for diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer and infectious diseases such as Ebola. Lend your smartphone's processing power to science while you sleep. It costs you nothing. It helps a lot."

There used to be one that was called [email protected] as well which analysed data from noises from space to search for ET..

Cure? Cure? Haha, nothing gets cured these days, there hasn't been a cure for anything for decades, no money involved in cures but plenty of money (billions) in treatments, save your battery the waste of time this is.

Incorrect. Extra strain on your phone which would otherwise be idling, means increased electric usage.

Phones barely use any electricity - it's negligible

A negligibility comparable only to the quantity of work units your phone is doing.
In terms of power efficiency, phones are a poor platform for folding.
Though it still has value as PR, and as a means of invisibly acquiring donations.
It definitely shouldn't be in freebies though; it's [email protected] who are the ones getting the freebie!

It may not be in the correct section, but it's in the best section
People wouldn't see this if it wasn't in freebies
Besides, since it barely costs anything to donate, it could be considered a free donation - hence a freebie
Kind of like the negligible cost of printing a voucher to get a freebie in-store
