another tracker is https://www.cerberusapp.com/ download the app for mobile devices. i use this in conjunction with prey.
note: when i got my mobie stolen i watched the thieves driving up the motorway with it on the laptop. i recorded their voices, and listened to their music in the car with them. if they had it facing them i could even have taken their pic. i decided to wait until they stopped.
but when the battery ran out they never charged it again. it had a crack on the screen so, i guess, no resale value as they would have needed to repair it. or they did a full adminstrator level wipe. I'll never know. so i wasn't able to go to their final stop and ask for my phone back...
these apps are brilliant but not wholly foolproof.

Like most of these tracker apps their rely on the thief not fully factory resetting the device or doing a full drive wipe. Anything without gps and cellular onboard will only ever be as accurate as the wifi signal it sees.
They are good but not always perfect.

A lot of people don't realise that the first thing many thieves do with a Mobile is take the SIM card out and sell/pass it on, often running up a large bill. Often the Provider will only cover the cost of any charges made AFTER you have notified them of the loss/theft
So as well as tracking software on your device please make sure you have a sim card lock enabled meaning if your SIM card is placed in another device it needs a PIN entering before it can be used.
It take seconds to enable and only prompts you for the pin when your device is switched on but may save you a fortune in the long run.

just checked & yes, I forgot i paid for it years ago. just checked and it is now 5euro - i bought in 2013 and paid 3. a one off lifetime payment. it covers 3 devices (just delete old devices when not no longer needed). perhaps I shoudn't have commented on the free board. my apologies.
i didn't mind paying as my phone cost £300. paying a little to help improve my getting it back (even if i didn't) was worth the punt. damn i hate losing phones. i
but i guess there must be similar free services out there as well.
i also remember paying for a month's 'live' continous tracking from Prey when i lost my phone. oh well.
atm i most love cerberus as every time i enter the wrong pattern-unlock code it emails me a pic of myself and time/location date of pic! i keep thinking one day this will be a useful feature... in the meanwhile i have generated a libray of cerberus-selfies.

These tools are not perfect by no means, any thief who's pretty switched on will know how to circumvent these tracking & protection security solutions, however IMHO the small chance of recovery is still worth trying them, particularly as they are straightforward to set up and cost nothing.

If there is a lock, there is always the key to open it....
Remove hard drive and format it on another PC- everything will be deleted.

If you guys are worried about them wiping your anti-theft app
Cerberus offers a way to install it as a system app hidden so even if they completely wipe and flash a new ROM, Cerberus will still be there, look it up on Cerberus website.
You do need an android phone and it needs to be rooted

It won't but generally it then relies on the fact most thieves will be looking to sell anything on very fast and probably will turn the device on to see what it is without thinking about it too much. When they do it hopefully connects to the web and gets the command to work / upload. Many people have BT Wifi hotspots they can use and it may connect to that that, or any other "free" hotspot it can such as the cloud, or o2 wireless.
Most opportunistic thieves won't do anything drastic as to wipe the drive as it reduces the resale value.

my phones are on a data plan. prey is on my laptop & uses wifi. it sends a signal back to them every so often. no wifi or data? i don't know. `

Yeah, I can just imagine some American developer of one of these apps and software using our devices as a looking glass. Switching on your camera and watching you and the other half doing what your doing. I trust these apps like I just them thieves.:laughing:

note: when i got my mobie stolen i watched the thieves driving up the motorway with it on the laptop. i recorded their voices, and listened to their music in the car with them. if they had it facing them i could even have taken their pic. i decided to wait until they stopped.
