The picking up of playback would actually prove handy, shame Kodi doesn't have this but apart from that some valid points as to why you'd want to switch. I have a DS215j with the Plex server sitting in the addons but from what I hear, playback isn't that great so have refrained from installing it. My main setup is via a Raspberry Pi 2 and my NAS for storage which generally works well.
I may look into getting a low powered server for Plex to see how it compares.

Finally, its just a shame Plex requires the server software to function, it's the reason I prefer Kodi over Plex. Unless someone can give me some massive differences?

Kodi is good for streaming web content but Plex is a better option if you just want to stream your own media library. I was an XBMC/Kodi user for many many years but sadly too much focus now is on the web streaming and plug in side.
Plex now has support for many different devices, the media server allows you to easily create multi user folders with automatic bookmarking for resuming playback across devices. My kids love the way they can start a movie on one device stop playback and then pickup from where they left off on any other device in the house (smart TV/Tablet/Now TV box/chromecast).
Yes it means having a NAS or PC on running the media server element but many people have this now anyway.
Not knocking Kodi...it has it's place, but so does Plex :-)

The op link indicates some services are available but I'm not sure if a pass is still required or not.

Its always been free its been on my Xbox for months.
Plex is great but if you have files that plex doesnt know and cant find info for it doesn't list Them. Last week i had the boxing and it was labled HBO Klitschko and plex never listed it i ended up calling it Nigella 01x01 to get it to show up. Bit pants really its not a all in one solution, i use mine to share media with family via the net and use a proper Hardware media player myself.

It's been free on xbox 360 for a few months but this is news to me that it's free on xbox one.. you had to have a plex pass to use it before (allthough the app has always been free).

You can just put files like this in a generic video library (like you would for home videos) and then you'll just get a list of files.
I also tried using the ps4 media player to stream a showbox movie but the ps4 can't keep the connection to my stream for more than 5 minutes at maximum. Its really annoying.

Unfortunately this is no use for me as i wanted to use my phone to cast videos to my ps4 but you need a computer running which is expensive to keep on just to sync videos to ps4 and i don't even own a PC anyway. I just want to cast showbox videos to the ps4 but it seems impossible to cast anything to ps4.

I remember in the past i used a dlna server on my phone to share online videos to the ps4, but the ps4 cinivia protection kicks in :-(

But you still need to pay to get anything useful out of these clients apps...right...so not really free

I don't actually see what benefit there is to paying for it? I use plex daily with a NowTV box and looking at what you get for the paid version I can't see anything extra that would be useful, am I missing something?
It seems to be just Music videos, trailers and sync options but none of these are worth paying for.

Nope - it does what you need it to perfectly for free.
There are some value-add things you can add by paying but they're in no way required and not having them doesn't detract from the core experience in any way.

I believe that you also get the option to have multiple user accounts and parental controls.
Not something I'm bothered about, but might be relevant to some people

I think when you pay, you can control what other users of your flex library can view aswell as the music videos etc. It works on PS3 too, but is a bit slow for browsing, but, far better than using the DLNA server function as it is far prettier than just a long list of movies and TV shows.

I love the fact that Plex gives all my personal video files automatic synopsis and posters (which gives it a Netflix feel). I use it via my console every oportunity and unlike my other systems, I have no sound syncing issues also use to play 3D format files.
