Mac Life magazine has teamed up with Pixelmator in their January 2016 issue to offer the Mac app for free. This app usually goes for $30 in the Mac App Store.
The way this works is you go to: http://www.pixelmator.com/special/
It will ask you a question about a phrase used in the magazine. To get the answers you can use the iOS app to download the issue for free:

Is this the installer? Would I need to enter any code during installation using this file? I already have a copy installed (a couple days ago for £23 duh!) in my Mac so I can't give it a try--when clicking on it it just opens my already installed one. If no code required, I'll give it to my colleagues. Thanks

I just copied it to the Applications folder on my Mac and it works fine. Doesn't ask for key or anything. It probably won't update through the App Store if they release an update, but it's great as it is for free. Thanks for the link neutech.
