In case you haven't noticed, Google allows you now to download maps (ios/android) and use offline. This might be good for those with small data allowance or not reliable signal.

Nokia HERE has been doing that for a while now, although admittedly the directions are a little odd sometimes.

Google offline maps don't work if you are in walking mode, only driving mode as I found out in Rome last week. Navmii does work whilst on foot and was much easier to use too.

I'm probably wrong but I thought sat Nav apps used GPS and thus don't use data allowance?
I have an old iPhone which is off line (no data tariff) and use the Tom Tom app as a sat Nav sometimes.

Some navigation apps store maps on your device so you can use it offline if say you don't have a data signal, whilst some need data to be constantly on map out your area.

Did you "Choose Your Side" in Chrome? It syncs your choice across all of Googles services (Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Maps etc)

I've been using the Google download maps for something like two years. Great when cycling through a continental city. But Spain was excluded. Maybe other countries. Has anything changed?

Within the last year yes, was a big change in the offline features of it.

How does this actually work? I have the iOS app and I can see no way to download a map. This would be handy for me in Jan when I am travelling from Geneva to the French alps...

Hit the menu button in the top left, in the search bar. Dropdown menu should have an option for offline maps.
I used this last week in Spain. It used to be that you could just download the map area but not get turn by turn directions from it. That's now changed though and has full navigation, just drag a box over the area you want to save

It isn't new. It has been there for a couple years.
Also to be able to use this feature you need to log into your google account.

This feature had been available since google maps first launched but over the past few years they had to remove it due to licensing reasons (there was unofficial ways to still download an area)
I always found the area it covers is too small if you are planning a long journey but for local people this is very good.

we have used this for many tears now. very useful when travelling. when abroad we usually download the maps of all areas that we will be visiting using hotels WiFi and then we can just GPS without Internet to navigate

Currently downloading USA map onto SD card on phone 4gb to use offline on my US trip next year, saving hiring expensive sat nav from Alamo

Or try Maps.Me. Its a free app for Android or iPhone. It lets you download complete countries at once, then all works offline, including directions and searching. Can also give walking directions. http://maps.me/en/home

Shame there is no option as to where the offline map is stored. 32gb external card and Google maps wants to use 400mb of the 1gb I have left on the phone....

I second the vote for maps.me, I've been using it for years and it's great. Also has sat-nav built in now too.
Does the google maps download now last forever? I've downloaded maps in the past but they only stayed for 30 days on my phone I'm sure? Hence I always used maps.me instead but Google might be useful to have too.
Walking route only works online and then suggests walking down a dual carriageway for the journey I tested. :disappointed:
If it's any good I may dump MapFactor for satnav. I'll always use digital OS maps for walking.

Like others, I use Maps.Me. For the UK you download a single map but for larger countries you only download the area you need. The only issue I have with it, is that the Sat Nav feature assumes that you are in a car. It has no option to say that you are on foot so if you are navigating around a city with a one-way system then it will not necessarily take you the optimum route. Its best feature is that it maps footpaths so it is fantastic for taking on a country walk you have not been on before. It maps features (hotels, bars, museums, etc) and allows you to bookmark favorite locations. This is great for the 'right let's bookmark where we left the car so we can find it again' moment.

What is new is turn by turn instructions available offline for Android and iOS at some point soon. http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-11/10/google-maps-offline-navigation-opening-hours
