This is one of the best clients out there!!
And yes, as with all download clients you will have to subscribe to news servers to be able to download anything!! Unless you have access to free news servers through your isp, though these tend to be capped & have very poor retention & many broken files!

after a false start of the email not arriving and signing up again, the program downloaded and installed fine, a bit silly in places where you have to restart the app to reload any changes you made (hello 1990's) testing out virgin media's news offerings to start with.

So is this just a registered download client of which I am sure there are plenty of free ones and you have to pay for a news server for it to be of any use anyway?

I paid a tenner for it around 2006 when I got into using usenet. Still works and I have been using it every day since.

I did google it and found out a little of what it's about and your right I don't need it.Having said that I buy a lot of stuff on here I don't need put away and never used.I'm a Sad case really.

Nope, the key is good indefinitely. Paying for the Usenet Search service is optional. We give a 7 day free trial on that so you can see how it works. The free key will keep Newsbin working regardless of whether you subscribe to the Search service or not.
