This should be compulsory. The amount of congestion caused by drivers in the middle lane overtaking nothing but air must cost the economy millions of pounds each year and cause loads of accidents. I do a lot of motorway driving and it irritates the life out of me.

They should do one specifically for Audi and BMW drivers. Teaching them where the indicators are when switching lanes, or for those that have actually mastered where they are, the art of signalling before actually moving the vehicle.

i may be missing something, but if overtaking nothing but air, would that not indicate a clear Road and no congestion?
MDrX

Apart from every car behind travelling faster now has to use a three-lane motorway as a dual carriageway. Then one person has to brake because the right hand lane is congested and you have a PHANTOM TRAFFIC JAM while middle-laner carries on as though nothing is wrong.

As you mention below, that's for congested traffic - and to prevent, for example, the left/straight lane at a junction having to wait for a right turn lane to move in order to proceed, which would be rather silly!

I'm sorry, with this education we could learn to disregard the speed limit and move in a lane to let the queue of traffic determined to box one in behind the next lorry continue their congested procession at rakish 71mph.

I realise this can be dangerous, but I cannot help tailgate and constantly flash middle lane drivers or over-take them, put my hazards on and brake. There should be more done to penalise middle lane drivers, its an attitude problem not education

Found this:
From Highway Code - 268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions, you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake. -
But this is the Highway Code - not a law book - but a guideline...

I'm not a legal dude but I think I read somewhere that, for example, on a 40mph road, if a clown is doing 30mph on the right lane with a queue of other clowns in front of him, and you're doing 40mph with no clowns in front of you, and over/undertake, then it's ok...I think...

Middle lane hoggers on 3 lanes don't bother me...because you can overtake on the right...but...it's the right lane hoggers that frustrate me...like what are you doing there, are you going to turn right on a motorway, into the barrier?!
violentj
20 Oct 15#48
but why be in middle lane if inside lane empty.
DeadMeatGF
20 Oct 15#47
Yes, you are missing something - if the inside lane is empty and a car is holding station in the middle lane then the empty lane is effectively closed as it is illegal to overtake on the inside. This funnels three lanes of traffic into two, and therefore creates congestion.

It is a generalisation, but certainly a stereotype that many notice. Driverless cars are most certainly on the way.

because the **** lane hogging is causing people to move out, they can't use the left lan to undertake, so **** has basically turned a 3 lane motorway into a 2 lane one.

Motorway driving is way easier than driving on normal roads if you know how to control your speed and change lanes timely.

Aherm.......I drive and Audi and always use the Mirror Signal Manoeuvre, am courteous enough to not hog lanes by moving over to the left if its safe to do so. But yes I do notice many people manoeuvre, signal, mirror. Self drive cars are the way forward.

I was coming onto the m40 from the m25 following some guy, and he pulled into the 3rd lane of a 4 lane motorway, swerving around too. I felt the need to undertake with a one lane gap as I felt this was the safest option for me, only time I have ever done it

A lot of the "older" generation (and I'm in that category) were always advised to use the middle land for travelling on the motorway, as the inner lane was generally full of trucks and it gives you more options of where to go if things go wrong.
This is a problem, because once you're taught that way it's really difficult to change (don't preach at me, I use Lane 1 to travel in, Lane 2 to overtake, Lane 3 to overtake if Lane 2 has slower moving traffic.... and the Hard Shoulder if all three lanes are blocked :sunglasses: )
People do need some motorway experience though, it would be quite nice if "they" (BMW drivers) used their mirrors before pulling out into Lane 3 when everybody else suddenly moves into Lane 2, there might be a reason for it.

Motorway driving should be made a compulsory supplementary test that has to be taken within 3 months of a practical test pass.i believe this would lower the mortality figures on uk motorways

Sounds good in principle, the amount of people that fail to drive well on normal roads despite having passed the standard test though probably means it wouldn't help unfortunately

Left hand lane empty
Middle lane hogged by **** doing 60
Middle lane behind **** big queue
Right hand lane becomes congested by people pulling out to overtake ****.
Moron leaves it late to pull out to overtake ****, causes sensible driver to brake hard
Sensible driver hit by other car in congestion caused by ****
Queue of people behind **** & moron now going nowhere
People sat at work when **** caused all of this get home an hour later than normal due to further congestion.
**** carries on oblivious.

It's mainly the idea of going that fast and with a little swerve, I could have an accident. I imagine if I get used it, after a few hours, I should be fine. This is a good way of doing that in a more controlled environment, which is great!

Not all applicants will be accepted, apparently. It will depend, in part, on your perceived need for the course:

Safest place to drive. Only 3% of accidents happen on the motorway. The majority happen at junctions and roundabouts.

No simply use the left lane when the road ahead is clear. As stated in rule 264 of the Highway code! Nothing to do with speed limits. Right hand lanes on the motorway are for overtaking.
