Just been to pick up the A530 which is a normal pedal on one side. They bring the price for £42 to 19.99 when I showed them the online price..

Hot price, I've got a couple of pairs of M520's on different bikes that I snapped up for £15 a piece (hot). Great upgrade for an extra fiver which provides more sole/pedal contact.

I'm going to be in the minority here I'm sure but I really dislike these pedals to the extent that they put me off clipless pedals except on gym spin bikes. I bought the M530s to complement a pair of M088 Shimano spd shoes. The shoes are excellent but the cleats are recessed and the black cage on the edge of these pedals catches on the shoe as you try to unclip. The only way to make un clipping viable was by butchering the shoes to the extent that I should be just bought some road shoes.
Unfortunately I've tested out the M530s with a pair of 069 road shoes (my wife just bought them yesterday for spin classes) and the pedals are so stiff it's almost impossible to stay on the bike and twist your foot to un clip.
Obviously I don't recommend these but I have voted hot as it's a good deal.

i can only assume you have left the pedals as is and not untightened the spring with an Allen key, I have these m530 (as well as the m520 no surround and the m540 (premium of m520)) on different bikes and I have untghtened every pair to 1/2 a turn from the loosest setting. I also wear the m088 Shimano shoes I'm on my 2nd and 3rd pair and they work perfectly fine with these pedals .

Definitely have them on the lowest setting, I have tried 520s on the same bike that a mate let me borrow and they were absolutely fine.
Yes - the SPD cleat attaches to the shoe (where the 2 stripes are)

I've had the same M520 spds on my commuter for 20 thousand km of riding. Brilliant pedals, same as these but without the cage/platform.

Really good pedals - I've been using these for a few years now, and other than a few bumps and scratches they are as good as new and there is no need to replace at all.
You can also ride your bike wearing trainers for a quick ride to town, etc ... not ideal as the SPD element is slightly raised, but its good to have a decent sized pedal around the SPD element.

Spds don’t give me confidence on anything remotely technical

Hot for "ultra-technical descents" is that a stunt or a technique for falling off?
