Argos have just reduced the newly released RING DOORBELL 2 bundled with a Chime, which is now the same price as the older version

Further savings could be made for those who have Nector Point (£2.50 off for every 500 points)

Bought ours yesterday, really good quality, suites our property

Hopefully some use to others

Got the first version of this shortly after release and can only say good things about it. Its helped with many packages, and have been able to send the police a link to some video to help with a neighbourhood issue.

A few questions if anyone can answer them.

What's stopping someone stealing this from your front door?

Can it be mains wired as it seems silly that you'd have to keep charging the battery.

I'm assuming you'd have to leave your net on all the time for this to work.
OllieSt to adhkarzf
1 Oct 17 #3
Nothing stopping it being taken but it does come with a 1 year on parts, lifetime purchase protection warranty. The thief would find the unit rendered useless once a report has been made.
phoenix72 to adhkarzf
1 Oct 17 #4
The bell is screwed onto wall or doorframe using a plate, the ring cover is then placed over fascia and screwed in using a security screw - RING cover theft of device - conditions apply

It can be mains wired, however battery will suite most folks use (additional batter only costs £20)

And yes, needs WiFi connection - again most folk probably leave this on anyway

Hope this helps

Well tell them not to. Their router must remain on or their service provider will nuke the connection and they'll get a horrendous speed for several hours/days after turning it back on again.
kjsav123 to dkl_uk
1 Oct 17 #34
It'll actually permanently result in crap speed. The automated system detects the connection keeps dropping so it reduces the speed (not actually the speed but something that results in slower speed).
They turn it off again - system thinks "that didn't work - knock it down further". It'll keep doing that it it gets to its lowest power output and then stay there - permanently - until someone phones up and complains the speed is crap.
If it's a fibre connection then they probably would never notice - if it's good old Broadband then that's gonna be a big difference :astonished: unless of course they only get a couple of Mb to start with

If I want to hard wire one of these and my existing bell wire is separately fused on my main fuse box is that a good indication that it's AC rather than DC? I just only be interested in a product like this if it's a simple DIY job. The very fact I'm asking this question supports that
phoenix72 to OllieSt

It does come with all the parts and instructions to use as a wired option- the battery however does have to be in also.

Anyone got this using Virgin? The reason I ask is I have Ring competitor called Skybell, works absolutely fine unless I moved to virign.

Tried everything possible, spoken to Skybell and Virgin, just can't get it to work.
sam_of_london to arjun311
1 Oct 17 #12
I had a Virgin Super Hub 2 and it showed as two routers . And it wont support more than 5-6 devices on oneband. With hub 3 it shows only as one router with more devices can connect. So upgrade to Hub 3 if not already.

I have Virgin Hub and work perfect with that, good strong signal and response time - if with Virgin, contact them to upgrade free to new Hub

@OllieSt@phoenix72 phoenix thanks for the answers much appreciated.

So is this continuously recording? Or does it just record when someone rings the bell? Or doesn't it record but just let's you see live pics?

It has proximity sensor, an area is set and once a person, animal is in that area it’s starts recording.

Worth pointing out that subscription costs are $30 for a year or $3 a month. I'd say that's pretty reasonable.

I like the idea of this in theory, but in practice I doubt that it would be able to handle the British weather and I would also worry about it getting stolen.

Not to mention that I'd prefer a non-cloud recording option and it would also have to be a much lower price.

I got the version 1 last year. Front door is around 35 foot from the router. Had to hard wire a wireless access point in the porch to deal with the buffering. This is a large house so I sort of expected this.

Battery needs charging 2 maybe 3 times per year. The app will tell you when and what power is remaining within it. Charge cycle only takes a couple of hours.

Records everyone who rings the bell or approaches the front door and uploads this to the server if you pay the annual sub £25 I think.

Most useful aspect is you can see who is at your door when you are away from home and converse with them.

Edit to add. Just looked at the description and am having trouble working out what is different from version 1
westernise
1 Oct 17 #40
I believe that the wide angle on the old one is much better than the new version from memory. It was for that reason, and the fact that the picture isn't that much better than the first version that I have not upgraded to this one.

Confirmed:
Old - 180 field of view
New - 160.

Hope this information helps someone.

Argos website review:
What's the difference between the first and second version:

I’ve looked into this for you and I can advise that both have:

Live video
Night Vision
Wired Power
Uniquie finishes
2 way talk

What the newer version has that the old doesn’t is:

Interchangeable faceplates
1080p
Custom motion zones
Swappable battery

1 Oct 17 #42
I think the ring pro looks much nicer and is hardwired only so no messing with batteries. The battery version used to have a delay connecting to WiFi so was pretty much useless but they might have fixed that with version 2.

These claim to be 1080p and im sure it's a 1080p sensor but ring have been compressing this to save space on the clould so much so it's pretty blocky I've seen better quality 720p cameras. The subscription used to be 6 months archive, then it was 60 days and now I think it's 30days. All without reducing the price. There is no local storage and if ring goes bust then this is a paperweight.

They have also been releasing buggy firmware updates that even bricked a few doorbells but generally made the quality much worse at night and stop the motion detection working.

Their support is quite good as my remote chime arrived faulty and they posted out a new one no questions asked.

I suggest you look up the Reddit thread reddit.com/r/r…ll/
For lots of unsatisfied customers.

I have the pro and do like it but I'm worried about the long term stability of this company.

Hi

Yes stick with the original Ring Video Doorbell - not this one - wider field of view.

I have 3 of them - you cannot tell diff between 720p and 1080p on a phone/tablet screen.

However the ability to pop in a fully charged battery is cool - but as it only needs charging 3-4 times a year it's no big deal.

1 Oct 17 #66
Response time isn’t too bad but it can hang a good while until it actually loads the video. Other problem is that it will not allow a second press by he visitor as the light around it will keep circling and circling. I also have a chime but that doesn’t help. It might just be a firmware issue, and definitely not my broadband (I have fibre, and also tested at my parents). Considering returning Doorbell 2 and waiting for the Nest Hello (I have Nest thermostat and smoke alarms anyway).

I have the older one wired in with a transformer and resistor which was bit of a faf and dont know if they do it as a kit now, if they dont they ought to really offer it.
As someone said I wish the video could be hosted locally on a NAS - I did request but nothing - I know its not too much for the cloud but still a cost if you have a NAS already set up.
I ended up turning of the motion detection in the end, too many false positives! The detection is adjustable through an app
I had buffering and they replaced it but it still happened, but since an update its been ok.
I am surprised to see that they are still using 2.4 instead of 5GHZ for the WIFI communication which dont help!
I do like it and its really handy when you're not around to be able to direct people and talk to them.

The website says that an API was on its way, however when I contacted their customer services, they said not likely to ever happen. Guess that means they are trying to make money by locking people into their subscription service. Sad

Was going to buy one of these anyway, £179 + 29 is the UK prices normally for the Ring 2 and the Chime. I was considering purchasing from the states as i'm due to go over there soon, which would have worked out to be about £170 for both.
Also, if you have a chat on the Ring online chat, they seemed quite happy to offer me a free 2nd battery for it, I just needed to give them my serial number once i'd purchased (from whereever) and they'd post one out. So bit of a bargain, but maybe a little concerning that they had the automatic go-ahead to offer a battery for those who showed concerns about battery life etc. Ho hum, will most likely order from Argos then really as it works out at about the same price and at least i can easily return it if it's rubbish.

1 Oct 17 #72
Had mine for over two years now and I'm still really happy with it. I originally imported one as they weren't available in the U.K. At that time.

Mine is hard wired to a Byron transformer and bell so rings when the bell is pressed without the need for a chime.

This is the one I bought. screwfix.com/p/b…766

First off you need a specialist screwdriver to undo it. Secondly it is covered by ring, so if someone does nick it they will replace if FOC. Once it has been stolen and you have reported it stolen I’m pretty sure it can be blocked (it can also be traced). As far as charging goes, I charge mine every six weeks, sometimes a bit longer and the truth is it really is no bother. Unscrew plug in overnight screw back on next morning job done. For the benefits it provides it really is worth it

2 Oct 17 #76
This is not a bad price and I've heated it. However if you look around around e.g. Amazon, you can find a whole Cctv system with 4 cameras, 1TB hard disk, POE and remote viewing for under 200 quid now. Have had one for over a year and it's infinitely more value than the single camera on this.

No It works by using telepathic signals and carrier pigeons.
bermudaviper
2 Oct 17 #78
And how do you talk to delivery drivers through that?
hcc27
2 Oct 17 #79
Usually for me seeing the driver through the camera on the smartphone or connected monitor is sufficient, if necessary there's a small window I can open to the side of the property which allows me to talk to them. For an extra tenner, the utility of being able to cover a whole property with 4 cameras, remote viewing while away/ on holiday, motion activated alerts to smartphone, 3 weeks of recording, perfect night vision etc etc of the system I have beats the very limited use I'd get out of this. Further, this can be ripped off easily by a ne'er-do-gooder as it needs to be fixed at eye level for doorbell functionality, whereas getting to my CCTV cameras will involve some extra work using a ladder and a metal implement.
Horses for courses of course.

First one patchy connection. Second dead out of the box. Third worked for a month then crashed after a movement event. Forth one crashing after a movement event straight out the box.
