Ok, so this is from Romania not UK, but for around £64-£69 (depending on what currency you pay in), if LEI it converts to around £64.35. There are some return flights to Romania for 2018 with Wizzair for under £70.

If you sign up to the discount club for €29.99 you'll get a discount on your bags and at least €10pp off the price and given you'll need to get to Cluj-Napoca, or elsewhere in Romania, likely to be with Wizzair it could be better getting this added on.

Either way I think this is a bargain, combine it with a nice city break to Romania and I think it's great value.

One of the problems with Wizz Air is they seem to shift their schedules near to the flight times so if you booking a series of flights I'd be cautious about one shift causing a domino effect toppling over all your other holiday plans.

See, I’ve always thought about a trip to Dubai but then you see stories like this and wonder why anybody ever bothers in the first place.
Ridiculous, archaic, moronic law system aimed to persecute the tourists putting more money into the economy in the first place.
They can can earn all they like from oil but without tourism they will be in trouble.
PhilipGregson to thedvdmonster
8 Oct 17 #15
Their income isn't from oil. Dubai is fine if you behave yourself. It's very expensive, if you like shopping, like hotel eating, hotel drinking, like architecture, then it's for you. If you behave like some Brits do in any city centre in the UK on a night time, expect problems.
Destard to PhilipGregson

Ah you beat me to it.
Agree with everything you've stated there.
I've been several times and never seen or experienced any trouble.
If the authorities were as bad and indiscriminate as Daily Mail readers would have you believe, then nobody would be going there anymore and their tourist industry would have died off.

It's mostly people who seem to think they can act however they wish in someone else's country and then the right wing media picking up on it causing the rest of the right wing sheep to bleat about foreigners and Muslims and all that jazz.
OllieSt to PhilipGregson

It’s not quite as black and white as that. Take an unmarried couple. In Dubai it is illegal for an unmarried couple to live together. When it comes to hotel rooms the question doesn’t get asked and in general there’s no issue. Upset a local for totally different issue and you could well find yourselves with sharing a hotel room illegally.

Whilst i cringe when when I see Brits abroad behaving in a scummy manner, I for one could not be bothered to spend my hard earned cash in a country like Dubai with such grey areas of do’s and don’ts. It’s a big world out there.
Destard to thedvdmonster
8 Oct 17 #20
If it was genuinely like that, there would be no tourist industry over there.

Could do a dirt cheap 3 in 1 trip to Asia. See beautiful Transylvania in Romania, then fly to Dubai and connect to flights to Malaysia / Thailand / Philippines etc for some cheap sunshine and food.

Actually Cebu usually have cheap flights to Manila starting at £40 one way. Which is mental considering the distance but I've done this before and it's fine if you have movies, books etc to entertain yourself!

Yeah, lots of countries have crazy laws. Like the gun laws in USA, the no-minimum laws for marriage in Saudi Arabia. Strangely, Britain even has a law to say it's illegal to get drunk in a pub (source: my mother in law owns a pub, apparently it's in a licencing act from the 1800's).

Reminds me of the stupid tourists who decided to pose naked on the top of sacred mountain in Malaysia.

We can debate the countries laws all day, but this is a deal site ;-) Follow the rules and safe travels.

There are several hundred cases like this every year and mostly you don't hear about it. It's only when it hits the press do the dubai authorities care to protect there tourism. They know given western countries are now moving away from oil there economic future depends on tourist. Having been there and had a chat with the local non Arab workers the human rights is terrible. Alot of worker are trapped. It's basically a country built by foreign workers who are abused and treated really badly and people go to the resorts to continue to support the abuse. People either don't care or play the ignorance card. I for one could never go back and support such a regime.

I'm curious too, probably form a mates mate down the pub I guess lol, u go to another country then u respect their culture, simple as that, u causing trouble trying to be human right fighter against what u claimed unfair treatment, then blame no one. And I'm not sure about abuse the other guy was saying, most foreign workers go work in these places for better pay and tax free, unless they hold ur passport and ban u from leaving ur job and the country, then I don't see any problem, they are free to go. If you want higher pay tax free and 5 star treatment and not getting "abused" then simply don't go, common sense not so common these days?

I've been there loads and it's amazing. You walk around streets in England and it's a matter of time before you see some nutter shouting or swearing. You just don't see that crap in Dubai... it is pristine, on the surface which as a tourist is all you'll see.

Obviously, that is because they have some damn harsh laws... you probably don't plan on going there and acting like a hooligan. If you do, you'll have issues. If you act normally, you will likely be alright and have an amazing time. It is not expensive either, a quality meal right outside the burj khalifa / dubai fountain is £10-20... hotels in al barsha near Mall of Emirates (if you don't mind Metro'ing around) cost pennies - £300-400 for 10 nights and they are great.

I went for the first time with my brother. We were early 20s, and very naive... we did actually have three minor incidents in that visit.

First, we unknowingly went in the women/children carriage on the metro... oops, the guard spotted us and firmly pointed us to the normal carriage. No big deal. We had to be told to not sit on a fountain feature in one of the malls.... and third, we were trying to get some pictures inside the area around the burj khalifa and well I guess we went to a private area because someone shouted and had to ask us to back off.

^ those (boring) stories above are far more likely things to happen than the scare stories posted on the internet. Note their tolerance... we didn't go straight to jail! Sh!% happens everywhere. London, New York. I can give you incidents like that from any place I visited.

I'm not defending some of the stupid stuff that has gone down in Dubai but I don't understand why it is such a deterrent to some people.
Schmutz
8 Oct 17 #50
do you think? I usually stay in al barsha and from the main airport it's £20 each way... same distance??!

Amazing price, too much hassle for me, highly recommend visiting Dubai, got bored of it the second time, avoid the summer as its really hot with high humidity,
Schmutz
8 Oct 17 #55
In the airports they have those fancy white lexus taxis they try to put tourists in, they are double the cost. The standard yellow (?) cabs are £20ish from Al Barsha to the main airport... £5-10 from Al Barsha to the Mall... £10 to the outlet mall miles away in the middle of the desert. I personally think the taxis are mega cheap. They get super cheap fuel!
Schmutz
8 Oct 17 #56
haha. I've spoke to a few people who consider it a "visit once" place. Why? it's cheap, awesome beaches, shopping, food, stuff to do. I don't understand. I feel that "highly recommend" "got bored of it the second time" contradict slightly too! I wouldn't recommend something that gets boring to me after one visit.

I personally am a freak with the heat. I love it. It'd be hell without AC, or maybe living and working there through the whole summer.

8 Oct 17 #59
ah cool last time I was there (May last year) they didn't have uber. I just did a few searches on the uber site and can see the prices are like you say... that is way more than the taxis are there mate.

Maybe that changed since too? :astonished:

It's always been a bubble waiting to burst to me; I think they could get away with charging the tourists way more. People think of Dubai being expensive but compared to other places I've been, Europe, America... it is cheap as hell to eat, visit attractions. Bottle of coke cola was 1 dirham in the mall of emirates carrefour. That was 20p... I don't know where else you get so much value for money, I'd argue Caribbean and Thailand but then you pay £600 to fly there and 11 hours compared to £300 /7 hours to get to dubai. Plus they have rainy seasons and dubai is awesome in the winter and if you can deal with summer temps of 40-50C, then it's all cheaper. The only thing which is considerably more expensive is the alcohol prices but that's because their culture has minimal demand for it.
primerahalu
8 Oct 17 #60
Put the fare lock on which is non refundable for 48 hours to make mind up checked flights from london to romania its like 145£ per person return total adds up to the cost of a ticket to dubai anyway. Guess wizz air will be caking in peoples deposits even if they dont fly! Great business! Love you xxxx
satty83
9 Oct 17 #61
That maybe the case but the waiter isn't a slave. Someone commented earlier that's passports are not taken. If you wish to close your eyes and ears to the truth that's fine.
Having physically spoken to people when we visited dubai in 2014 who live in the out skirts. Alot of these workers from india who we spoke to explained how they all had there passports taken away by there companies. There were paid less than they were promised and brought across under false premises.

I'm sure alot of expats who work out there might be doing well as professionals but the harsh truth is there is slave under class. The thing is this was what I saw when I went and this is my individual experience having seen it I can't Change what I saw and feel personally i couldn't support it. Similarly there will be thousands of visitors to dubai who stay in the luxury hotels and go shopping in the malls and have never seen such things. To them it's a fantastic place to go.

It's a difficult topic to debate online and ultimately like all things in life it depends on your own moral compass which will be based on your own journey through life and everyone and thing that has shaped it.

PhilipGregson

Nothing grey about their laws. You are a foreigner. You fit in with them, not the other way around. They have come some way to accomodating western ways, alcohol etc. The cohabitation thing is an issue for westerners, but tough, their rules, their country. Put your head above the parapet and , etc. etc.

OllieSt
9 Oct 17 #67
There is everything grey about the laws. Their rules are not clear, therefore grey as perfectly explained in my post that you replied to. You can defend all you like it doesn't change the truth. Here's anther example You can drink in a hotel bar legally, get into a taxi, get reported for drinking and arrested. (that's after consuming 1 drink , in fact taxi drivers drop you straight off at cop shop). Whilst I am unsure how that would pan out for a local (there is only a tiny % of the population that are local), it's crazy. It's better to just have no drinking throughout the nation, then there is no grey areas.

Each to their own, but the above is not my idea of a holiday.
C.Pennington
9 Oct 17 #68
If you book the flights separately and you miss the connection due to a delay, i wouldn't expect the airline to compensate you. Sounds risky to me. Also think that Dubai is full of pretentious people, and although there are some impressive buildings I think it is a horrible country with archaic laws. Done it and wouldn't return.
OllieSt
9 Oct 17 #69
And just to keep those that travel to this nation on a regular basis up to date

From FO

The UAE authorities announced on 7 June 2017 that showing sympathy for Qatar on social media or by any other means of communication is an offence. Offenders could be imprisoned and subject to a substantial fine.

So perhaps talking about the 2022 World Cup whilst sipping your Pina colada with your life long unmarried partner would not be the thing to do in the hotel bar. Step outside to the taxi and guilty as charged on 3 offences.

As I said each to their own

depends where you stay - we experienced both. It can be a very different type of holiday depending where you stay. Skiing, desert hikes, sky diving, watersports, ice skating, tour buses, shopping - dubai is far more of a city break than a beach holiday, its not a Caribbean holiday.

Also if you go in the winter it's something like 25C highs 15C lows on average, surely that isn't too hot?
