This is the phone I'll probably get in a year's time when it's £300 cheaper. More than happy to stay a generation behind and keep the cost of a new phone to £400-£500 where is should be
Palwan to Foley2001_uk
4 Oct 17 #8
400-500 is your affordability, someone's affordability is 100 and others 1000
Foley2001_uk to Palwan
4 Oct 17 #13
Affordability is one thing, value for money is quite another, the difference between a £400 smart phone and a £1000 smartphone isn't in my opinion remotely good value for money. Google said it themselves in today's presentation. Technology advancement has slowed down, diferences between phones year to year is marginal yet price drop after a year is vast.

Note 8 no doubt. It's a beast.

Note 8 is stunning.

But the time to buy that was probably a few weeks ago when there were contract offers with a free Dex that were cheaper than the equivalent S8/S8+ deals.
XxLJCJxX to CaptainSocks
4 Oct 17 #10
I'll be buying sim free, got a sim only contract. Pixel XL 2 has dual front facing speakers, better battery life, better camera/video, cheaper. Note 8 has that bigger better screen, s pen. This is a hard decision.
CaptainSocks to XxLJCJxX
4 Oct 17 #19
Ah.

The Note 8 was the same price as Sim free with an unlimited sim for calls and texts (only 2gb data mind) plus the free Dex.

That's gone now mind. Forget I mentioned it!

I can't believe that Google's website for these things lists 64gb / 128gb 'memory'.

I thought it was only amateurs that made this mistake.
bloooo to ezzer72
4 Oct 17 #18
It is a type of memory
ezzer72 to bloooo
4 Oct 17 #21
In a way yes, but it's not the terminology in general use.

When describing the specs of a phone, would it be right to say it has 4gb memory AND 64gb memory?

The acceptable term is storage, and Google should have that right on their site.
kaizhu79 to ezzer72

I am tempted to make the switch from iPhone 7+. Can’t decide between this 2 XL version or Samsung 8+. I like the fact this is a clean install with guaranteed updates. When are Samsung likely to give up updating the s8?
OrribleHarry to Dan_999
4 Oct 17 #40
The quick end of updates is grossly exaggerated to be honest. you normally get long enough updates till the phone is outdated 3 years ish.

Apple on the other hand keep rolling updates out which slowly grinds the phone to a halt after a few years.

In my experience Google support longer than Samsung

Carphone Warehouse have the same offer but, delivery lead times are shorter for the 2XL. I've ordered a 64GB Black & White 2XL from the Google Store and delivery is stated as 21st December. I ordered another from Carephone Warehouse and delivery is stated as by November 20th (November 15th for the black one). £10 cashback through TCB for the latter too.

It should be GB (big GB). gb (little gb) isn't a measure of data storage at all. Gb would be but as there are 8 bits (small b = bits) to a byte (big B = bytes), 64Gb would equal 8GB. Not that you asked that...

I have recently got ip8 with 0% finance, but I will either have to make a lot more money in future otherwise I think the phone prices hitting 700+ mark are getting out of hand.

Companies purposely slowing down older devices (apple) are adding insult to injury

To be completely honest I see very little difference between my old ip6 and this new ip8

Both are insanely responsive when new.

I think I may try and never update the current iphone.

soton26
4 Oct 17 #57
It's almost as if manufacturers have realised that the technological differences between models is now so inconsequential that the only way to get people excited about them is to increase the price massively, as people are then convinced that there *must* be some reason to pay silly money for their handsets even if they're unable to justify the reasons why.

Would it be worth buying the phone to sell on immediately and keep the Google home mini? How easily are these phones resold at higher than Google price to cover difference in fees and postage to some extent?
plebbygiraffe
5 Oct 17 #61
Yep, and what they're saying is very dangerous in my opinion. Charging a premium for software features that historically would be given as version bumps in the apps available to all. They're creating a tug-of-war between what they provide to the Android platform and what they keep for their own devices.

Lens for example, which is basically a new version of Google Goggles. But you need to buy a Pixel to use it until the plebs get it later. No justification for this really from a consumer point of view.

The basic one looks like an iPhone 8 but the XL is a nice looking phone. It has the best camera and some very clever tech, clean OS, unlimited full resolution uploads and regular updates at 200 less than equivalent iPhone X. I nearly bought an S8 plus but have gone for this. Was concerned about the very curved edge on the S8 which causes it to shatter at any modest drop and it won’t get the updates like this. I’ve gone with the 64 gb version as many who bought 128 last time are dropping down as they’ve only used 32gb in a year due to the auto upload and delete in full resolution of all photos and videos. I heard I can also stick my camera photos on the phone and get full resolution cloud storage for them and my 4K videos also. Additionally the image stabilisation on video on this looks class leading.

So true, I recently grabbed a S7 edge for £450 and it has 95% of the features of the recent phones. I’m not missing out at all but saving £350 vs Iphone 8 Plus, Samsung s8 Plus and pixel xl2. Stay a year or so behind with your phone upgrades and you’ll be quids in for zero loss of features
Scorpion
5 Oct 17 #89
I can't believe the Pixel 2 is so poor. I want a replacement for my aging Nexus 5, so hoped this would be it, but...
- Dated aspect ratio (for a flagship, in 12 months it'll look so dated!)
- Not got a quad HD screen (it's got the same PPI as my current Nexus 5!)
- Small battery
- larger body size than my Nexus 5 even though the screen is the same size
- No 3.5mm headphone jack.

They've missed the boat with this one. I'm considering a switch to an S8 now as that ticks 95% of the boxes for me.

5 Oct 17 #90
Apple have included an adapter in the box for free with every iPhone (without a headphone jack) sold so far. The adapter can also be bought from Apple store for £9, not £30+. It’s probably the cheapest thing they sell to be honest.

5 Oct 17 #91
It may be ugly and overpriced, but definitely not a POS. DXOMark gave this phone the highest score they have ever given to a camera phone, it runs Android Oreo out of the box and Google gives any owner unlimited photo storage at NATIVE resolution for life. Compare this to the price of the iPhone X which is a Samsung Galaxy S6 in all but name.

I wouldn’t do either having done so in the past few years a few times but out the two 100% go for the Pixel. Essential phone and OnePlus also good options but waterproofing on new Pixel makes it for me. I loved the hardware on my S7 Edge but the software experience is awful. Lags after a few months needing a reset and pain that Samsung try to make you use their crappy apps instead on Google apps for lots of things (you can change most of this but still a pain). S8 meant to be better (uses google music I believe) but long term support and software reliability is essential if investing in expensive phones.

I bought the note 8 before this was announced. I was going to wait to see what the pixel 2 was like. Glad I didn't waist any time waiting. Note 8 has better design, better quality screen, brightest screen in the business, none exsistant bezels, s-pen, headphone jack, wireless charging, ip68, 2x zoom camera, ois on both lenses. What does the pixel 2 have? A paid for DXO mark of a slightly better camera. Trust me, after you use the note 8s camera you won't care about the pixel 2s.

Waste of money in opinion. Bought a 2017 A3 second hand (in mint condition) a few months back for £130. Brilliant phone, why pay more. IMO some people are so materialistic and need to get a life. Can't you see that phone manufactures are ripping you off (particularly apple).
Wake up and smell the coffee guys, the iphone when launched 10 years ago cost $499, the latest model is going to cost $999 - extraordinary.
New tech should fall in price not go up!
When I bought my first computer, about 20 years I paid about £1600 which was a lot of money. Now I can buy one which is infinitely more powerful and has load more storage and RAM and is much smaller. Price around 1/4 the price that I paid 18 years ago.
Whereas Iphone has doubled in price in 10 years. It does not take a genius to work out that these price rises unsustainable.
The mobile phone is (at least in the UK) very mature. Most people now have one and a lot of people have a decent mobile. People are waiting progressively longer before upgrading. Why pay silly money so that you can send an animated emoji!!

Yeah you raise good points, the only thing I'll miss is dual front facing speakers coming from the Nexus 6P. Can't believe the Note doesn't have that to go with that awesome display. What is the Note 8 speaker like? Loud?

Also after more research the DXO actually marked the Note 8 better at taking photos than the Pixel XL 2, video's seemed to be the weak point bringing down the overall score. One other question. The Note 8s screen aspect ratio? Do you find it weird when viewing stuff?

Yes 60 days is 'a few months ' like I said. 30 to 31 days in most months. So a cheaper to buy when released, much less desirable version is still 399 a year on. You are very unlikely to pick this up for 300 in a year as you claim. 500 may be.

Note 8 is much better. Much better screen . More display area compared to bezel. 6gb ram compared to 4gb in pixel. Microsd slot. Overseas models have dual sim . Works as computer with Dex dock and displayport alternate mode. Only thing thing better with pixel 2 is less fragile than Note 2 due to bigger bezels.

There built to a standard the designer engineer and its build and most importantly price for its market can stand.

If you’re not a Mac user (I am and iPad) 100% more freedom. I also believe under windows 10 and chrome OS they are now working on a iMessage style integration (think already out on windows 10) so go with the Pixel. You will get fans of Samsung, Apple and Google telling you their opinion. For reference I own/owned the very first chromebooks, Nexus 4, 5, 6, OnePlus 2 and X and iPhone 5 upwards and first galaxy S and S7 Edge. Currently mainly Apple but still have a M8 GPE and Moto X and Pixel C. I tell you all this not to show off but to validate when I say don’t get a Samsung or any none stock android (or close to stock like OnePlus). I’d still go with Pixel as OnePlus shafted OnePlus 2 owners over updates. As an iPhone user the only thing that comes close is a Nexus/Pixel. Even though they don’t have the best hardware it is known that hardware is nothing without software. It’s the reason most people I know who do serious IT work (outside of GPU CUDA) use a MacBook!

not possible unless it has removable battery and the only last phone that did this was the v20 which is a gamble to buy because of lg boot loop fiasco, never again... wish there was a phone that comes out which atleast is user 'easy' to change battery out

Agree, its easier on android and problem is most people are too 'not tech savvy' to see what companies are doing, for me I select to not update apps, then update them if I want too, things like facebook messenger I never update it gets so high in memory and battery, then using greenify to stop apps running and then thirdly ins android you can manually go into every app and stop it using things like location, 95% apps work fine with them turned off, Im using a phone

5 Oct 17 #156
I know it's pricey for how it appears on paper, but if you've ever used a clean google/nexus device (I had a nexus 5 for 4 years or so) where it's minimal, fast, clean, simple, vanilla and fully featured, you'll understand why this will sell.

No it doesn't have a ridiculous screen, 6gb of Ram, a crazy big removable battery or a microSDcard slot, ip68 protection, or a headphone jack but the experience as a whole I expect will be a lot nicer and better than some of the chinese offerings at cheaper prices.

My current oneplus3 is technically a very capable phone, but there's just no charm to it. It's pretty mundane. The software works fine but little quirps and bugs annoy me, it's pretty heavy, a bit big for my hands and the camera sucks. The loudspeaker also sucks.

It was still £400 or so pound. The extra £150 (i'm including value of the home mini, and the £10TCB that should track) is more than worth it for me, as long as it provides me with the great experience my nexus 5 did for so long.

Also, bluetooth audio isn't THAT bad. My ankers work fine for gym use and i'm happy to use them elsewhere too. I'm not an audiophile though so maybe i'm massively wrong.

It's each to their own. It's a fair bit cheaper than the latest iPhone, and a fair bit cheaper again than the fancy Samsung notes etc. (I'm talking Pixel 2 here, not the XL)

I had the Samsung Galaxy S (the original) many years ago and it lastest me a LONG time, but only because of me flashing roms and rooting etc. and that malarkey. Hardware wise it was fine but touchwizz is absolutely horrible. It's basically for children in my eyes. I have colleagues and friends with S7 and S8 etc. and it's still the same. Horrible.

Again, these are all my opinions. I just know that I kinda wanted the pixel last year but went for a oneplus3 instead. One year later I've decided to just do it properly and i'll be selling the oneplus once i've confirmed I get along with the pixel okay.

5 Oct 17 #157
Yea it's not the best phone.

Has unofficial water proofing
Large on board storage
Usb c
Dash charging which is quicker than Qualcomm
Great software support (regular updates)
Good industrial design (not to big or small)
Dual sim
And is buttery smooth

I am still with my aging nexus 5. Lately is crawling like crazy. I am sure everytime I update the apps it gets worse.
Pixel 2 is nice and colleagues of mine worked on the camera software and algorithms. But too expensive. I wanted to look for honor 9 but is sold out. Otherwise I will go for a oneplus 5. I like the note 8 but I fear the fragility of the glass.
jaydeeuk1
5 Oct 17 #159
That's bollocks. The nexus 4 sold 3 million, the pixel barely 1 million. Sure the profit margin may be (a hell of a lot) bigger on the pixel, but it certainly isn't more popular than their previous efforts.

Note 8 has micro SD slot, waterproofing , wireless charging , 6 GB ram, best screen in the world ,works with your TV or monitor with displayport alternate mode, works as computer with dex dock and Andronimium style screens. This is just overpriced Google trying to fleece you for free updates.

Value for money means getting something that is reasonably price for what you're getting. Most tech drops in value AND price over time. So you're not getting better value for money by buying something that is older and less sought after. It's like waiting until flying cars come out before you buy a regular car, then saying you've got better value for money because the price dropped since nobody wants a regular car anymore.

The CPW £399 is the Pixel standard.

I want this phone but the price is just nuts. Almost a grand for a phone? FGS what has happened to fair pricing etc? It is no wonder that some of us have embraced Xiaomi.

LG v30 is looking most promising now but the vanilla Android of Google is untouchable.
deany76

That price is the same as the standard then? if so, it makes the Pixel XL great value if updates last 2 years

The Nexus wasn’t a phone for the masses, the Nexus One was expensive and hard to get ahold of. The Nexus S was expensive. The Nexus Prime was expensive. It wasn’t til LG got involved with the Nexus that it became cheap. I owned all the Nexus phones until they became cheap - they were the premium android experience and that’s what the Pixel has become. There are lots of cheap android phones for the masses to pick from

I'm also going through this decision process. The Pixel 2 scored the highest score on DXOMark, having said that its camera is only marginally better than the Note 8's camera. Add to that lifetime photo storage at native resolution which is also a huge draw. However, the S-pen on the Note 8 is a game changer. I'll wait for a few demo phones to be available around where I live before making the decision.

I was pretty much in the same boat Lahn. Loved my Nexus 5 until the power button went. Wanted the future Nexus but refuse the pay the Pixel prices. I went for the One Plus 3 and it, "feels," like a nexus phone. In fact, I'd say my One Plus 3 is the best Android experience I've had, (used to say that about the Nexus 5.)
Cloudane
6 Oct 17 #190
This is going to be my approach too, as it was with my iPad. Nowadays it makes as much sense as buying a car brand new, where it depreciates a grand the moment it rolls off the forecourt. A smartphone these days loses £100 at unboxing.

I'll hold out until my Nexus 5 breaks I think. Just too cheap to spent crazy money on a new phone when my current one still (although sometimes barely) does its job. My wife's got a Oneplus One, we both looked at the 3 and 3t, but still holding out.

I'll be willing to pay like £350-400 for my next phone - if my N5 died today, I'd probably look at a Xiaomi or Huawei to feel like I got myself a good value phone

Any advantages ordering direct from Google rather they Carphone warehouse where I can use TopCashback for an extra £10 off?
XxLJCJxX
6 Oct 17 #199
For the sake of £10, order direct from Google. Customer service/warranty replacement will be so much easier should anything bad happen. Current 6P owners with battery issues got replacement units, some getting Pixel XLs or even refunds outside of the 12 month warranty.
hmsq82
6 Oct 17 #200
Not really, it's all to do with their policy more than anything.

Last year I bought the Pixel XL from CPW as it was cheaper and delivered on time before Google Store, when mic became faulty after a couple of months I just went to google support who sent me a replacement brand new and I sent my old one, CPW had asked to take mine in for repair first, with 2-3 weeks without a phone.

Where it is beneficial to buy from Google store is that, it is easier to do claim with them faster, I had a Nexus 6P from Google Store and I just received a full refund after 2 years with the device(I was on my 3rd one, faulty battery, always got a brand new replacement not refurb. YMMV). Would CPW do this, doubt that.

I only paid £336 for my One Plus 3 that I left on the tube a few weeks ago.

Not wanting to spend much, I had a brief dalliance with the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 which was great but for some reason the software refused to update by OTA or manually, (even though the firmware was available.)

With very limited options (as I need dual sim,) I paid £266 for another One Plus 3. If you cant pick up a cheap One Plus 3, I guarantee you wont regret it.

The only information out there is information you let them have! It’s that simple! Pop ups that get clicked, viruses that get installed are all down to the same people that point their fingers over the left mouse button at fake sharing competitions on facebook, and perpetuate the problems! Received a rather convincing email from HRMC about taxes owed back to you? How many would click the link and not phone up and ask the question! That’s the problem. My tin foil hat isn’t to protect me from conspiracies or the theories behind them, it’s to protect me from the idiots in the world that make the problems worse!

I agree that you may get it quicker through CPW, but I wouldn't order through them. I got my Pixel from CPW (on release) and when I had a warranty problem, it meant that I had to send my phone to Google, wait 3 weeks, and then receive my replacement. This is the case with any 3rd part re-seller (Including the carriers)

If, on the other hand, you order through the Google store, should you need to raise a warranty request, first, they send you a new phone, and then you send your old/broken one back - a much simpler and less stressful way to deal with warranty provlems.

Well worth the extra wait IMO.
