And those tiny wheels are really going to work well on the UK's pot-holed roads.

I fear for Xiaomi, all these re-badged products are diluting the brand name.

I would imagine this would get picked up by customs and taxed as it is hardly discreet packaging, The phone app only supports chinese language and warranty could be a problem as it is a huge box, you could ride to china I suppose

So you've got to weigh well under 12 stones to ride this, doesn't that suggest that the build quality isn't very robust, especially considering all the pot holes on UK roads.

That is super duper illegal mind you :P

This looks lovely and would be significantly cheaper than the (afaik) best cheap ebike solution of a decent, sturdy bike, maybe a mountain or hybrid, plus a BBS02 motor and battery pack shipped from china. That comes out at maybe £800 with a 50/50 split of money between the bike and motor.

Shame about the weight limit though. My bike needs to carry about 130 (I am heavy, as is my cargo) which my current cheap folder does.

Average man is over 80kg in UK and looks small too so there may also be height limitations. More a child or woman's bike and even many women I'm sure will be too heavy for it. I actually really like the styling of it though. They ought to do a scaled up version. If its a self-import I guess it bypasses the normal certification process for bikes.
Gentle_Giant
8 Oct 17 #24
The more I look at the pictures, the more I suspect it is a copy of a UK designed commuter bike someone tried to launch a couple of years ago.
Since I havent seen the streets flooded with those, I doubt this version will sell well (in the UK at least).

Size and obviousness do not mean import duty is inevitable; I received a huge roof rack from China via Royal Mail, fully expecting and prepared to pay duty - they just delivered it.
bonzobanana to Gentle_Giant
9 Oct 17 #28
Yeah it's a gamble. The main time I was caught out was when I had purchased a lot of imported goods and had to pay for duty on one of the larger items. It's almost like they allow a certain number of purchases per address and then if it gets excessive they charge. My experience anyway.

Well Bicycle meant to be paddling vehicle. It helps you keep fit and wonder around on short distances in this age.

If we start adding motors to every thing for commercial purposes they will loose their very use. That's exactly we are doing by promoting motorised bicycle.
CampGareth to meetmax
9 Oct 17 #31
Eh? It's a vehicle that I use to get me places. Transport is the primary use, not fitness. An exercise bike's primary use is fitness. If an electric bike gets me there faster (and it does, I average a low speed because of hills, fitness levels, weight) or more comfortably (not sweating so much I need a shower) then it is a better vehicle.
bonzobanana to CampGareth
9 Oct 17 #34
No question that is a fair point although many people are caught out with e-bikes when the battery is discharged and have to cycle the remaining way without assistance. This may not happen when new but as the bike ages and battery capacity reduces it becomes more likely. This depends on the range of the bike and how far your commute is though.

People are saying 100kg capacity but clearly the gearbest site states 75kg in the listing and as response to questions. I see no reason to believe it is 100kg. That could well be a different model fitted with different performance wheels or some other variation that reduces load capacity. The hub motor may be different etc. It may be different to another model. There could be chinese spec and export spec or something like that.

They mention a derailleur but clearly it hasn't got one. From what I can see it has a Shimano Nexus 3 speed hub. This is a very good feature and much better than a derailleur. Derailleurs on small bikes get caked in mud and water and tend to be problematic on small wheel bikes like this so an internal hub gear system is far superior. 3 speed hubs also tend to be the most reliable type of hub gears due to their simplicity, be it Sturmey Archer, Shimano or SRAM. Anyway good feature.

This looks too big to get by customs without duty so factor that into the price. Maybe something like 2.5% duty, 20% VAT and any processing charges. So could end up around £500-550 in total?
Gentle_Giant to bonzobanana
9 Oct 17 #36
Duty will be a lot higher than that I think. It has been a few years, but the EU had a huge anti-dumping tax on Chinese electric bikes last time I tried to bring one back from China; a bike bought for £120 was going to cost me nearly £600 by the time I got it home.
bonzobanana to Gentle_Giant
10 Oct 17 #40
That sounds like an excellent point. I was un-aware that there was an additional tax on top. Sounds like if gearbest were despatching from the UK or Europe this would be a great price but despatching outside Europe means best avoided. I bought a 80cc engine kit for a bicycle a few weeks ago. £75 from bangood, then a discount code and cashback bought it down to around £66 delivered which was despatched from Europe with no duty of course. Same product despatched from China was well over £100 around £130 I think as the best price and probably a lot more due to duty. Larger items are definitely better despatched from Europe.
CampGareth to Gentle_Giant
10 Oct 17 #42
I thought the anti-dumping tax was only 48.5%, so a bike that cost £100 would cost £148.50? Also ebikes aren't covered by that, which is why you see stories like this floating around about EU ebike manufacturers wanting to expand the anti-dumping legislation. Really not sure I understand that though. If you're having trouble competing at a price like the one for this bike then you're getting screwed on pricing somewhere or are choosing to strap £300 of motor to a £2000 frame when £300 of frame will do.
bonzobanana to CampGareth
10 Oct 17 #43
Most of those EU ebike manufacturers are just screwing together chinese parts and sticking a 'Made in Germany' label on it or similar. It's a bit of a farce. A huge amount of products made across Europe are nothing more than assembly of Chinese parts plus a huge price increase. There are some exceptions like cars where a good percentage isn't made in China or low volume manufacturing but the amount of people claiming they bought German or Italian when the product is clearly in reality Chinese.
Gentle_Giant to CampGareth
10 Oct 17 #44
As I understand it, the con goes like this; they charge multiple, stacking taxes; so say the bike is £100 and the shipping cost is (say) £50, total £150

They then charge whatever the duty rate is for electric bikes - say 20% so making it £180, THEN they add the anti dumping tax - which you say is 48.5%, making it £267, THEN they add VAT @ 20% making it £320. Then there will be admin costs and charges by the parcel firm, also with VAT added, that may ALSO be added to that initial £150 calculation.

I may also have the order wrong, if they add the anti dumping tax last, it will increase the total bill quite a bit.

A couple of years ago I made the mistake of challenging a duty charge on a large, but low value parcel; by the time HMRC and FEDEX had finished, I had a customs and duty fees bill of £86 for a parcel with a declared value of £20.

BTW, the anti dumping tax was rigged - you can read up on how they finagled it, and all to protect the single FRENCH electric bike maker, (most of the cheap bikes allowed in are Chinese parts assembled in Turkey - which has a strangely generous duty free border with the EU, despite not actually being a member).

To make it even more obviously a protectionist tax, the prices charged on the street in China are waaaaay lower than the price they will sell electric bikes to European customers for. The bike I wanted for my wife was £130 OTR, with shipping via a friend at £100; the CHEAPEST similar bike I can find advertised for export to the EU has a much lower spec and costs £399 PLUS shipping.

A Brompton without electric motor can be purchased for maybe £700 secondhand which is much stronger and more compact than this chinese product but you will have to cycle up hills and get fit doing so. If its not for you, you'll pretty much get your money back or close to it so minimal cost. The chinese electric bike will probably fail pretty quickly and be pretty much scrap and that money is gone, maybe you'll get £50-100 for the faulty bike or maybe not. A Brompton can last many years, its strong chromoly steel construction for the main frame and it might last 15-20 years with parts always available. So Brompton ownership can be very cheap long term. I know often its about initial price you pay but the reality is for some products their cost should be calculated over the long term. I'm not a Brompton owner myself but aspire to getting one. Sadly I'm currently over the 110kg limit so pointless me even thinking about one currently.
CampGareth to meetmax
9 Oct 17 #27
If I had the money for a brompton I probably wouldn't be cycling! :P

Why are they charging so much anyway? Doesn't look like the warranty's that long (5 years on frame, 2 years on parts like gears). I'm guessing it's because they're 'made in london' which does nothing to improve the bike itself.
sokratesagogo
9 Oct 17 #32
Tried one outside a Xiaomi shop in China. Very well made and supports up to 100kg. I would choose this over a Brompton.

Cheers gentle giant. I went through PayPal so it should be ok. They are a strange company first they claimed they couldn’t send it to a major U.K. city as it was too remote. Then they decided they could. Then they couldn’t. Finally they claimed it was stuck in customs(see original quote).its the same with the refund...first its store credit ...then we will send it allow 24 hours...then back to store credit...am just about to escalate it in PayPal.

its a shame it’s a nice bike and got excellent reviews in last years uk press
Gentle_Giant
10 Oct 17 #39
I suspect it is the batteries that are the issue, they forgot the airlines and many parcel firms wont take them. Most of the electric scooters I see in the UK use lead acid or niCad batteries, this has to use LIon to get the capacity in the small area; and I suspect the battery pack is detachable - which is when the carriers start kicking off about not taking them.

As for the rest, they are just trying to BS you.
bonzobanana to Gentle_Giant
10 Oct 17 #41
I'd disagree and state most e-bikes I see are later lithium-ion/polymer type batteries but those would have been correctly imported, certified etc through the correct channels safely stored in containers on cargo ships when transported. A personal import of an e-bike must be difficult for customs on many levels, certification, legality, safety etc. It's better when these companies import themselves and despatch from some dockside warehouse. However maybe in the case of e-bikes they just can't do that.
