Can anyone advise if this will be able to play from an external HDD.
I would not be streaming only playing from an external HDD, and doesn't need to be 4K.
Is there a better option or player for around the same price that anyone can recommend?

The box in the OP will do what you want, but a better choice would be either Beelink MINI MXIII II (£37.08) or Mini M8S III (£32.63).

Mini M8S II is available for £21.50 in the 1GB/8GB model, but android doesn't run particularly well with 1GB. It's more than enough if you were to run Libreelec instead, which is preferable to android, and it can be booted from SD card keeping android on the internal eMMC for dual-boot.

forum.libreelec.tv/thr…ce/ - Basically write SD card, put SD card in box, boot to recovery, reboot.
That will allow you to boot LE with SD card inserted, android with it removed. If you prefer you can ssh into the box and issue the "installtointernal" command, which will replace android with LE, giving faster boots and better R/W performance.

Most AML boxes can be booted/flashed from a flash drive in one of the USB sockets (some in any USB socket), although a few have USB booting disabled. Nothing lost by trying on yours, just remember to try a different USB port if it doesn't work first time.

Not familiar with the box at all but it is 1gb ram - no matter how good it is its still going to lag occasionally. Would give it a miss.

A 4GB box is unheard of at this price. My only concern is the chipset. No reviews anywhere.

Not voting either way. If anyone has first hand experience or can find a review please post. I did try looking.

I hear so many stories of boxes failing, running sluggish and locking up across various brands. From my testing I've found heat to be the main cause due to poor or no ventilation whatsoever. This is definately a box killer..

I just ordered this box for fun really and the currency exchange rate means the price is fluctuating somewhat (it was 38.29 quid for me). There was some suggestion that they have European warehouses (Spain, France and Germany I think), so if they ship from there, it might avoid import duty/VAT, which is my main concern (it's also why I didn't go for any of the bundles they offered to keep the price as low as possible). I also didn't pay for faster shipping for the same price reason, but this could mean a 3-6 weeks shipping time (no biggie for me - you can halve the time for another 3.63 quid postage if you want).

Yes, I have a Zgemma (twin sat tuner) box, which is good with the Wooshbuild 6 image running on top of OpenATV 6, but it has some drawbacks (the DLNA client won't even display filenames for anything over 2GB and 5.1 sound seems to have disappeared with version 6!). The MX10 with the discount code and flash sale is so cheap for what look like good specs, that even if I don't get much use out of it, it won't sting the wallet that much.

Pretty much why I ordered as spec wise, nothing (I could see) comes close for the money. Only negative comments seems to be the chipset and issues of pausing on a different model. If its a complete waste of time then as you say, its cheap enough not to worry. Lets hope its not!

Yes with android boxes you can install tvplayer which will give you freeview channels plus a few freesat ones. Also it'll give you 30 premium channels too if you want them for £5.99p/m one month free trial.
Tv player itself though is free.

I use a Xiaomi Mi Box 3 with SPMC player and it passes through EVERYTHING in the correct audio format; Atmos, DTS:X, TrueHD, DTS:HD-MA, all perfect. Only had an issue with Kodie 17 on it, hence SPMC.

any idea what the antutu score is on this? i had an earlier chip on a box a few months ago and it barely broke 15k on antutu score. was 2gb ram aswell. needless to say i werent having that - sent it back!

I wish I had patience with my MXQ. Constantly 'error' this and 'error' that. App failed... buffering... freezing... no sources aaaarrrrrggghhhhhh #@$ing thing. I spent ages wiping it, updating it, installing all the working add ons. 4 months later, only one works, well sort of works when it feels like it. Maybe I just dont have enough tech knowhow or the patience.

i bought a Mecool Ms8 Pro a couple of months back based on a couple of reviews on youtube....now it cuts the power off at random for no apparent reason so i've been looking very hard to see what would be a better replacement.....from comments here and from reviewers all over the internet, a 'good' android box should have an amilogic s905x chip, at least 2 gig of ram, wifi at both 2.4 and 5 ghz, android nougat 7.1 operating system, a decent ethernet port, usb 3.0 ports if possible and a slot for micro sd card (please tell me if i'm wrong or if i've missed anything out!)....i haven't yet found such a box at a reasonable price (nvidia shield is apparently the best but it comes with a hefty price tag).....i did look at the x96 mini which seemed good value for money then discovered it doesn't have bluetooth so i'm still searching....appreciate any recommendations please....

Only joking. I bought the EASYTONE Android 6.0 TV Box 2GB RAM from Amazon, I've nothing to compare it too as it's my first Android box but it seems to work well. I don't particularly like Kodi, and find it frustrating. To my frustration a lot of my file collection on Plex plays without sound, which seems to be an issue with with Android boxes?

I bought Top TV Launcher 1, might be worth a look if you want to customise your start menu. I was able to add Plex, iPlayer etc to the start screen. Pitty about the Plex sound issues.

Anyone recommend a Kodi build that works well with Android boxes?

I have the version 8 box of this make, I was not impressed. Fails to update date automatically so every time i fire up box i need to manually set up date. It''s not sup[ported by Android so i can update the firmware, it just pops out an error message. Unless people can confirm these issues have been sorted i wouldn't touch them.

I would say unless you can find a ROM on Freaktab (you can't at the moment) then you'll be out of luck with this box. Boxes with Amlogic S905X and at least 2GB RAM are well supported, (the box in this deal uses Rockchip) although there's many of them. I always check for custom ROM support on Freaktab first. I haven't seen or researched for any boxes using Oreo, the main feature with Oreo is Project Triple which means better future firmware support, although again I don't know how that would affect any Chinese boxes on Oreo, anyway perhaps that discussion is for another day.

Stay clear of Rockchip at the moment as their closed source policy makes for very slow custom development.

At this price go for an equivalent AMlogic S905x, where you will get far greater community support and improved firmwares, as well as Libreelec if your sole use for the box as a media player/streamer.

The 4Gb RAM on this is more of a gimmick than of any real use.

Can anyone recommend me a box. I will be using Kodi on it for streaming movies and live football. Will also be using mobdro. It must have Google play store. My budget is £40 , wireless internet would be a bonus as would 4k streaming. I also want it to run the latest android and be as future proof as possible, thanks.

Rockhip is a pretty bad choice of chipset if you are going to be using the box for media playback. AMLogic (s905/x/w/z) based boxes are a much better choice for a media centre, Allwinner if using as a NAS or server.
