I would highly recommend people don't purchase the older X1 controller. This one may have the headphone jack, but it's not the S controller. These are weak and poorly made in comparison to the newer S controller. Save you money and buy the S controller.

Agreed. The differences are substantial
Dekard97 to Junglis999

Definitely. I personally went through 5 X1 controllers back in 2014, mainly for left thumbstick failure. Depending on the game, and the amount of force you use, the original controller could last as little as 4 weeks of gaming for a heavy handed gamer like myself. In comparison, the 360 controllers lasted me 3 years, and 4 years respectively. In fact, my last 360 controller has almost no heads left on the thumbsticks at all do to 4 years hardcore usage, although it still works faultlessly.
There were massive amounts of complaints to Microsoft about the issue, so they eventually rectified the weak areas in the gen 1 controller. I've subsequently had two S controllers since day 1 with no issues whatsoever. This is not to mention improved tactile ABYX buttons, Bluetooth, wireless connection and range, shoulder buttons and grip. There is no comparison to the original in quality.

Have one of these myself (have rechargeable AA batteries). Never had an issue.
There are newer Bluetooth controllers but other then the Bluetooth there is next to no difference. The 2nd gen version of this (as this model seems to be) fixed all the issues with the controller. I'd say get this one.

Like I said, depends on the game and the gamer. I had one of these 2nd gen controllers with the same fault. The only difference was the headphone jack in that model

Play and charge kits are awful and over priced and don't last more than a year. Better to get a 4 pack of rechargeable aa batteries.

I'm still using my play and charge kit that I bought with my day one xbox. No issues at all with it. My other controller uses rechargeables, I find it marginally more irritating replacing the rechargeables than just plugging in a USB cable

Perhaps repost to state that your play and charge kit hasn't lasted a year.
I bought my play and charge kit from CEX nearly 3 years ago. It still hold charge for over a week for 4-5 hours gaming a night and running TB's via it. Cant fault it. I have 2 friends who are also in the same boat as me with the charge kits. PS more improvements than the D pad compared to an 360 controller. However the 360 still beats the x1 controllers in build quality. Play and charge kits FTW.
Heat to OP...pity it aint an elite controller

Go on YouTube and you will see 360 play and charge kits not charging with hundreds of thousands of views, so it's more common than you think. You can fix it with a paper clip but it's a short term fix. If you have recharable batteries you never have to use the controller wired and if a battery goes dead it's much cheaper to replace.

Is the controller the new model?
reddragon105 to James5642

There have been three versions so far - the original, with 3.5mm jack added, and then with Bluetooth added. The first two versions look the same (obviously except for the 3.5mm jack) but the one with Bluetooth doesn't have that separate glossy bit running along the top (with the Guide and shoulder/bumper buttons), instead it's all one piece and it's matte black like the rest of the controller.
So going by the box image and the fact that the Specification says it has a 3.5mm jack, I'd say it's the second version, so no Bluetooth, and that's probably why it's on clearance.
Xbox One controllers do work with a PC if attached via a micro USB cable. My Xbox One controller is the 2nd model (3.5mm jack but no BT) but I also have one with Bluetooth (3rd model) that I use with my PC - but I can use the one from my Xbox One as a second controller when I need to just with a USB cable. It's the Xbox 360 wireless controllers that can't be used via USB at all (only charged).

I recently bought an xbox one s with an extra controller but I don't have play and charge kits for them. Would it be worth buying two of these and selling my current controllers? (One of them is even still in the box so I imagine I would probably get back what I'd pay for these two, with the bonus of getting the play and charge kits)
My controllers are the Bluetooth ones but I don't have a pc so I don't think that matters to me, unless there are other features that make them an improvement.

Ah. Put one in basket to collect within something like 2 mins. Go to check out and tells me OOS for collection. Then slowly check other stores within x + miles. No stock within 50 miles so take the offer to use Delivery instead. Then tells me OOS for delivery.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think this is the case. I'm sure it will only charge via USB when plugged in, but all the actual controller information is still transferred wirelessly, hence the need for the PC dongle for the older, non-Bluetooth, models. Happy to be proved wrong as I've lost my dongle

That was the XBOX 360 where plugging the play and charge kit into a PC only made it charge and you still needed the Crossfire receiver to actually use it as a controller.
for the Xbox one you can just connect it via micro usb to play on a pc

Cant, 360 pads only transmit power through play and charge kit. They still use wireless even when plugged in that way. Normal wired 360 pads would work though.
Thats one of the things they redesigned on the xbox one pad. Essentially turns into a wired controller when plugged in.

My bad your right. I was getting it mixed up with the ps4 controler. I'm still wondering if it's worth upgrading my pc wireless 360 pad to the xbox 1 controller. Seems like they improved the d pad but everything else is worse.

On the look out for the bluetooth version as well, according to MS, this one does not -
"On Bluetooth-supported controllers, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the face of the controller. On controllers without Bluetooth, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the top, where the bumpers are."
Also too bad even this one is not available for collection in my area either. Don't have a Xbox, but on the lookout for a nice controller I can use with my Android phone and PC

It does work on a PC (wired), but depending on what Operating System you use you may need to install the driver manually. I have both this and the XBox360 wireless controller, and I prefer the XBox360 wireless controller for PC gaming. It is cheaper, too!
