Finally released officially in the UK by Facebook, Messenger Lite is a super lightweight version of Messenger it focuses on just text, picture sharing and voice calls, it installs and updates in seconds compared to the main Messenger app.
If you use Messenger but have no use for the added features over simple messaging and voice calls I thoroughly recommended using this Lite version instead.

Using less data will save you more money. • Works on all networks - It's designed for 2G networks and areas with slow or unstable internet connections. If you don't have a connection, your messages will be delivered when you have signal. • Works on most Android phones - you can use it on almost any type of Android phone, new or old, including Gingerbread.

Perhaps it should be posted under a different category, but is it really any different than some other stuff that's posted on here, e.g free Lego with a newspaper, or free movie screening (usually very limited etc.)? - it wasn't previously available and now is, for free!

Should get very hot as anybody with limited storage can finally get rid of the vast standard app without getting repeatedly urged to re-install or having to move the standard app back to SD every time it updates every few days.

Does this allow the use of that Facebook messenger thing? Why they force the use of an app when you use your mobile is beyond me. The official thing is too resource heavy and insists on sending everyone I've ever known a message that I've installed it, talk about invading privacy. If this allows use of messages without all that rubbish even better.

What are the permissions like compared to the full version? Can this one still technically listen in to your conversations to try and target ads to you even when it's not being used?

I've used this for about 6 months now and really like it. This is Facebook's most useful core feature and nothing more. No trying to rip Snapchat off, no bloat, just a good messenger app that will allow you to message and call anyone you are friends with on Facebook.
I don't even have the main Facebook app installed, just Messenger Lite. I can keep up with any group chats and messages perfectly fine. Anything else on Facebook like status updates i can't say I care for, so this app has been perfect for my requriments.

Not the same, the lite versions use their own server so it uses less data than the mobile site. I did read it somewhere but after testing data use I believe it to be right.

I don't like messenger with all its permissions so I've always just opened Facebook in desktop mode to read messages. It's a real pain trying to reply tho it never runs smoothly for some reason the text always plays up. Surprised there isn't a 3rd party app that takes care of fb messages without all the intrusive stuff.

Facebook and WhatsApp track the hell out of you. You can reduce it, just a bit, by reviewing all your security and privacy settings. But they are still bad for it.
A better solution is mewe, but like a busy nightclub, people use Facebook because that's where everyone else is, not because it's a good thing.
In any event, unless you really know what you are doing, the Android itself will be reporting your entire life back to Google.

Finally released officially in the UK by Stalkerbook, Messenger Lite is a super lightweight version of Messenger it focuses on just fake news, fictious picture sharing and monitored voice calls, it installs and updates in seconds compared to the main Messenger app but dont worry it still has the same monetisation of your data that the original version has.

Just so you know, Facebook will collect and share data between all their products to create a detailed profile on you. This includes the Facebook app, Messenger & Messenger Lite, Instagram, WhatsApp and others. They will also scan and upload your phone contacts to their servers, including unsaved numbers you may have communicated with on WhatsApp, and use this for friend suggestions and more.

I think you are charged PER text, the length of the text is irrelevant, so I cant really see many people using the lite version, unless they are stuck in Luton Airport in a time warp. Also Images are presumably the same size, so no saving there. You could probably save the same amount of storage space by deleting one of your photos of the Luton Airport Stewardess.

Why should you even need an "app" - when I use my Windows PC to go to Facebook there's no need for an app is there.
They don't want you doing this though so if you try the same thing with the mobile site m.facebook.com then they have banned you from using the message function. This is because they want to control you with their app instead, and in particular raid your contact list so they can spam people you know.
I agree though with your suggestion to get Facebook Lite APK. This is designed for use in third world countries with low-end phone hardware and slow Internet access; Facebook try to prevent us using it here. Works well for messaging.
