We deliberately went a week over on our first service on our Lexus and had no issue returning the car without a second service as it wasn’t technically due

Why would you need a second service? Only one would be required at the beginning of month 13.

136 BHP from a 2.1 litre diesel is a bit poor. Is this the one with the Renault engine?

AMG spec looks nice and sporty, but drive is awful. If you can find a decent lease on the Mark 7.5 Golf GTD, go for that instead.
Toybhoy to Jakirrr21
1 Oct 17 #16
+1. GTD is a much better option but I don't think there's any good deals on it at the moment. Should keep an eye out for a GTI deal if going petrol.

There's a 1+23 @ £259 for 10k pa deal on for a Seat Leon Cupra with SEAT Warrington. I'd go for that instead of this A class if I was in the market for a fast hatch (an actual fast hatch, which this Merc isn't).

I've had a couple of these as courtesy cars whilst my E-Class was being serviced and honestly couldn't recommend them. They might look nice, but it's nothing like driving a Mercedes in my opinion. Too many assists, uncomfortable seating position, lacking in power, and ugly interior. I think I'd only remotely consider an A-Class if it were an A45, and even then, I'd have to be getting a seriously good deal.
Aaronnnn to foo25

I have heard the same, they look nice but like you said the drive is nothing like a Merc

They already have them. Everytime I see an AMG Line version one of these driving about it's a youth who has spent half his disposable income leasing this thinking he's a baller because of the badge. Too bad it's slower than a 15-year old 1.6litre Honda Civic with the build quality of a car worth 3/4 of its price.

I've never seen a "no deposit" deal before. This is extremely good value. Regardless of what it drives like etc. It's very competitive. If people can show us better alternative deals, then i would like to see them. If you drive around in an old car right now for example. Buying a brand new car like this is always going to be an improvement.

Leasing seems the way to go vs buying a new car, unless you get a big discount from a broker. E.g new Honda CRVs and Nissan Micras can be bought with upto 25% discount.
So many people still walk into dealers and pay close to list price. If buying a new car you should be getting between 10-25% off. If not then lease.
This seems a good deal

Nope, the 200d (2.1L) is the first Mercedes own engine in the diesel lineup of the A-Class, anything above a 180 in the A-Class is. I drive a 200d as my daily car myself and can say even on the motorways it is a fab economical engine!

Obviously has nothing on the actual AMG Engines though! :P

If you have your heart set on a A-class then this is a deal as they normally cost £1-2k more than this over the term.

But as a few others have said they look great, but drive meh. If your still considering one test drive it against its rivals. Ideally when leasing try not to be model specific, voted Hot as it is a good price for a A-class. Although apples and pears I went for a Leon Cupra for £250pm.

This isn't a "real" AMG though, it's an AMG Line; essentially all the show, with none of the go. Mercedes will happily sell you an A-Class with the same engine and same power output in basic SE spec.

The only other Golf which shares the GTD's engine is the even more expensive AWD Alltrack Estate.

Why have cars become so low? Is it because they are all diesel now?

Back in the days a 2.0 Honda was a power machine, I recently took a company Merc C class 2.0 diesel and it was incredibly slow. Was surprised how poor the acceleration was, my 1.2 Polo 2004 plate is faster at take off and wouldn't even cost a £2k now.
dont.mack.me.off

You can always go for the Seat Leon FR184. Same engine as the GTD and a fair bit cheaper.
SavB
2 Oct 17 #84
Combination of a greater focus on emissions and significantly heavier cars due to the amount of tech going into even the cheap hatchbacks. Back when fuel was cheap and people didn't really care about emissions, it was about getting as much power out of the engine as possible. And cars were light since they weren't packed with as much tech, luxury or safety features.
Nowadays you have cars which are much more comfortable and luxurious, but severely underpowered unless you buy a sportier version. But then if you do that then the government throws as much tax at you as possible, to the extent that it's barely worth it. Don't even get me started on insurance costs.

JusticeForThe96
2 Oct 17 #87
I was told that there is a lot of these on the road as they're particularly fuel efficient, so companies who provide company cars will use them in bulk.

It's a lovely looking car, I don't agree with other comments slating the interior, it's nice inside and out, especially with the sport seats, but it's massively under-powered and an underwhelming drive.

Please note, I don't know the first thing about engines, but I was told by the servicing manager from one of their major flagship stores that the car was purposefully underpowered so they could put more torque into their higher end vehicles and not have to increase their fleet emission rating. And confirmed they use renault engines.

Avoid if possible. Looks good but not worth it.

I can't comment on the newest model of E-Class, as mine is a W212, the previous model. I have however driven the newest C-Class, which I couldn't really fault. I'd imagine if it's anything like the previous generation, the E-Class will feel much less cramped. The interior is a little nicer too, although I'm not a fan of the two large screens in place of the speedo. If your budget permits it, I'd go for the E350d as they're big heavy cars. The E220d is probably perfectly adequate if your not too worried about power, but sometimes I feel like I could be doing with a just a little bit more than the 204bhp the E250 produces. If it's your first Mercedes, I doubt it'll be your last. It's hard to drive anything else once you're used to the comforts!
MrSweeney
2 Oct 17 #96
Of course, I forgot... technology hardly advances at all in the space of nigh on a decade, does it...?? :unamused:

Which "standard" are German cars not up to then?? Are we talking a legislative standard here or a standard of your personal opinion? Also at what point did I make an excuse and what was the excuse?? (as you can tell the confusion is snowballing for me at this point.. )

Being smart with money is a good characteristic regardless of how well off you are. I generally come here for tech deals but I like to check out these lease deals out of curiosity.
And yeah the M3 is a money pit. Insurance is the biggest killer, but it's so fun to drive. I dont buy anything I can't afford to run. Otherwise I'd have bought an F Type. Maybe in a few years.

2 Oct 17 #102
It did take me a bit of getting used to to be honest, although I did have a 2-seater convertible before. My E-Class saloon is slightly too long for the average parking space, something I always notice at Tesco. The estate is a little longer again, so definitely something to keep in mind. The parking sensors and camera will make life a lot easier though.
Trane
2 Oct 17 #103
Given that we're discussing two year leases in the main - do you have any other articles to show that German car drivers should be concerned?
MrSweeney
2 Oct 17 #104
"They are still unreliable" - So that's a fact? Based on which statistical data was this fact derived as at the year 2017? I just sold an e350 cdi (coupe) I had owned for 4 years and never had a single issue in terms of mechanical or electrical faults. My mrs had the use of a C220 cdi (company car) for four years which covered 60k and never experienced an issue and now she has a c350e plugin hybrid (company car also) for the last 18 months and wha' d'ya you know...? no issues there either.

Not saying they never break down of course (ALL CARS CAN) as I'm sure there may be someone else out there who has been unlucky and had several issues. But if they were as bad as you say, then surely between the 3 mercs we've had and collectively covered over 100k miles, surely we should have had at least one fault on one of them...??!
jaydeeuk1

Oh!!! How did I forget!!?? (...It's a complete shed, that's how I forgot cough, cough lol) My mother in-law drives a 2005 plate Mercedes A class (1.6 petrol I think...) she's owned it from new lol!! And basically it's the mule of the household in that we use it for things like tip runs, taking the dogs to the vets (big dogs that shed plenty of hair) and anything that involves donkey work or something dirty (ahem). It's an awful car IMO though, uncomfortable, slow, ugly (shocking amount of usable space though).. No offence to anyone that owns one

Never broke down, has never had any major components changed like (gearbox, etc). Has had bits done for regular maintenance purpose of course but has all been cheap stuff. The ONLY 2 FAULTS it's had and still has, is the A/C stopped working, needs a new part but we can't be ars*d to fix it. And the rear driver side passenger remote door lock is jammed and doesn't lock properly..... that's it after almost 13 years of weekly abuse.

Asking if it's a renault engine is legitimate.

Big mistake from Mercedes to keep on producing engines above the 2.0 mark, which means more expensive tax in a lot of countries. Hard to justify such a decision.

voted cold from me, this Mercs quality is questionable, too stiff a ride over bumps, very limited rear view your better off looking through a letterbox, and no rear parking sensors. Can't see over the front bonnet and cant put your arm up on the window sill as it's too high. Plus the stuck on touchsreen is just screaming out to a chav to rip it off. The back side looks like a nissan almera with its bubble lights. :disappointed:

I agree that in terms of economical and tax costs these large engines are not the way to go. However, Mercedes as a brand was never marketed as being economical. It has always been THE pioneer luxury brand, I can honestly say they're slowly going back to hold that status.

No, sticking an "AMG" badge on the back of a regular A class diesel is not going to make it one jot quicker.

Its badge engineering - like BMW with the "M Sport" trim level.

AMG will have had very little to do with this car
pgilc1
2 Oct 17 #115
Because the "question" was "is that not AMG in general?" which was a response to "Everytime I see an AMG Line version one of these driving about it's a youth who has spent half his disposable income leasing this thinking he's a baller because of the badge"

ezzer72
2 Oct 17 #118
I guess your point is any issue will be covered by warranty? Yes, I'm sure at least most of them will.

However, consider;

Losing power in the 2nd or 3rd lane of a Motorway
Pulling out a junction or roundabout, and the car failing
Your wife/girlfriend/children waiting on a hard shoulder for assistance
Taking time off work to get warning lights attended to, or other problems resolved

Yes, all of the above does happen to European cars - you all know and accept that these kind of things happen to Renaults and Fiats, but for some reason won't have it that German cars are equally troublesome, despite looking 'posher'. There are tonnes of surveys and reports out there that back up what I am saying, it's really not my opinion or imagination.

2 Oct 17 #119
That's all terribly convenient isn't it?

And to be fair, I was attacking the Audi A5 in particular, as one contributor was telling us all how amazing it was.

If you had said the 116D or the 118D then fair enough but the 320D is still a 190ps car with a 0-60 in the region of 7 seconds so hardly a slow car. Granted it's nothing M Performance but these trim levels sell.

AMG, M Sport, R Line, GT Line, S Line etc. have kind of always been around, but they didn't used to be official Manufacturer's designations - we used to call them 'lookalikes' - 1.1 Escorts that looked a bit like XR3i's and all that

Real AMGs are pretty expensive, both to buy and to run. The average under-25 year old couldnt dream of leasing and running/maintenance one. If I see a real AMG, aside from the CLA or A class AMGs as they're still quite cheap, I'd think you're pretty well off.

That;s not really the point, 300Nm is plenty enough for public road driving is what I was saying. The extra 80 you talk about is of little use unless you are playing top trumps or need to compensate for something. These are not cars I would choose to tow caravans, but it would manage it.

The lease company is the registered owner and registered keeper.

Keep your eye out for 2nd hand car threads. This thread is for a lease deal and obviously of no interest to you.

Yes, they do. But they are just trim levels.

Not sure what you're saying, but I don't like button or pedal handbrakes.

I don't know what this car has, but I know mercedes have the pedal handbrakes in many of their cars.

I got the A180d AMG-line with night-pack at the end of last year for £225/month. It's a really great car with lots of stuff coming as standard. Apple Carplay is incredible, and it's quite peppy when you put it in sport mode. You do see quite a lot of people with A-classes these days, but still relatively few AMG-line A classes, which is cool.

You said "I don't like the Octopus pedal thing they have going on with their cars."

I pointed out that this car (i think) has the electronic handbrake.

HTH.

Its not nice to drive. Had one as a courtesy car, thought the 200 engine would be comparable a little to the 220. Nope, feels like its a 1.4. If you like driving, do not get this car!

Not voting cold as the deal is not particularly bad.

Rang up just now and they said the offer is over?

3 Oct 17 #135
Ah okay, I was just checking. You replied to me not knowing (for sure) the answer, so thought the question mark mean't you 'preferred' the electronic handbrakes on that car. To be honest, I don't really like the button handbrakes either. Flintstone-mobile for me please!

I buy my cars outright so don't always go for brand new rather near new 6 months old. ive been lucky with buying in January dealers were trying to flog 66 plates just before 17 came out so secured myself a good deal and a decent spec car.

Completely disagree. I have a C220 coupe, partner has the A200. The A200 is quicker, more economical and handles better than the C220.

The deal is no longer on the website and they didn’t get back to me so possibly ended?

I just see diesel as a liability these days. Gov always thinking of taxing them out of existence, especially labour if they get in next time..
