Went to John Lewis today and was looking at both 65 inch LG B7 vs Sony xe9305 and wow the LG OLED is just night and day difference. The Sony was brighter but colours didn't pop as much and blacks and viewing angle wasn't as good. For an led TV the Sony was the best on display though part from zd9. Tough call to make to be honest with you. It's a gamble!

funnily enough i was about to pull the trigger on this very set before seeing this deal. from what ive read & been told it’s about as good as you’ll get to OLED without paying OLED money, and it looked superb in store next to a sony OLED they had..... but it’s knowing that for another £300 you could have the real deal with this LG thats thrown a spanner in the works for me.

Whilst a a very capable set, I wouldn’t say it performs just as well at all. The price reflects that.

I don’t mean to knock the deal.
But this apparently performs just as well. I’ve seen them side by side in currys and seems allot brighter.
My wife has a tendency to pause the TV and go off and chat on the phone for a few hours. Would that kill this sort of TV?

Torn between this and the Sony 55A1 which I can get for £2100. Apparently the LG's a brighter set, with a quick response time and a better interface.. but the Sony has an incredible picture and processing etc.
What would the general consensus be then folks? The difference is obviously £500, but that's nothing over the course of ten years or so.

Both issues were fixed with a firmware update. The video even states this in the description.
There are some differences though. The B7 has better near black performance and is brighter for HDR. It also supports 120hz refresh at 1080p and sligtly lower input lag for gaming.
Really all things you would expect from a newer model. I've had a B6 for quite some time that i paid around this price for and i've been really happy with it.

I understand that you've spent a large amount of money on your TV and you're very precious about it but the B6 is far from flawless...
It's a shame it's not OLED level quality. I have contacted John Lewis and Costco and they have said it is covered under their warranty however Richer Sounds said it's not and you can go through your home insurance so it's reassuring to know a few companies do cover it in their warranties. Looks like I will be biting the OLED hype come black Friday.

I also own the 2016 C6 OLED with 3D and I actually compared it the the newer 2017 models , I found the 2017 model slightly better with dark detail and a bit brighter in hdr with less noise , but to be honest differences were only minor in my opinion and not worth me sacrificing the truly awesome 3D capabilities on my c6 , heat added nevertheless

Hey - yeah the LG SJ8 sound bar slots nicely in place. Though it's currently going for £499 and was £250 at John Lewis a month or so ago. I would hold off until it's reduced again.
Another thing to consider is that it needs the LG T8 bracket to connect to the sound bar and Curry's are charging something ridiculous for it. However, I've heard that if you go in store and ask them to throw it in for free then they will go for it.

9 Oct 17#157
Anyone know if the soundbar slots in neatly with either the B7 or C7. I seen one in store and it looked like it was just placed in front of the TV. I want it in a TV stand with the LG soundbar slotted in with the TV as best as possible.

I heard many people have been suffering this with sky news, BBC news, cnn etc basically channels with bright statistics logos cause screen burn in and LG state it's not covered under warranty. So now I'm really considering sticking to led TV as at least I know I'm safe here and settle for less deeper blacks. It's a compromise I'm willing to make spending that kind of money. Such a shame :(... I'm looking at the Sony xe9305 65inch now as the alternative.

I have owned a BenQ xl2420t 120HZ monitor since the early early days when they were £400 for 24".
I do get competitive in Halo, Fifa online. Division 1, highest rank in Halo matchmaking... but I can only play on that level on the BenQ. Even though these games are 60fps, the monitors response is what I care about and it is instant, like a CRT. On my television (Samsung UE55D7000) I can't keep up. I don't know if 21ms will be good enough on that basis? I have never tried CS:GO or any of these insane PC shooters really - I am guessing that they are a whole level above it.
I do also have a great PC setup with a 980TI powering 4K monitor, or the BenQ at a smooth 120fps. Honestly, I like console games though. Fuck the master race. Yeah, it's more competitive with kb+mouse, high FPS, higher resolutions but consoles still kick ass in their own way.

So it is an inability to fine tune your sound bar that is the issue?
How is it calibrated? I place a microphone at various points around my viewing/listening position and the receiver sends a pulse to measure the correct distance from each speaker to where my ears are positioned.
Never been tempted to experiment with a sound bar as I've always considered them to be a poor altermative to 5.1.2 Atmos, which sounds pretty amazing, but understand the temptation if space is an issue.
Hope you manage to get the issue resolved so you can enjoy your awesome TV.

7 Oct 17#137
The speed of sound at sea level = 340.29 m / s. That means that sound travels 0.34029m in 1ms. I sit 1.1m away from the sound bar. That's 3.23ms. My sound bar works in increments of 10ms, so it'd be pretty difficult to compensate for that. Anyway, the problem seems to be that the sound is ahead of the video, so I'd need to set a negative adjustment.

thanks mate! that is awesome low input lag... I thought there'd be a chance this newer OLED tech was good at some things (e.g. blacks, colour vibrancy) but compromising in other departments... but apparently not. Also see it is around 21ms with HDR. Great.
I wonder if the "game mode" option is easy to toggle on/off? I use a samsung UE55D7000 and it is buried in the menus.
If this TV gets cheaper over black friday I'll get it. Upgrade from the UE55D7000 which is now 5+ years old.
The Samsung was a flagship set but it's ageing.
Reasons to upgrade for me;
4K Smart TV features (slow/limited on the Samsung) HDR Samsung has around 40ms input lag so I never really play games on it
^ justifies it 100x over.
Do you think this TV is the top option for someone who wants maximum picture quality but also wants to do competitive gaming? Is the timing right?
The person I live with doesn't care to upgrade TV more than once every 5-10 years, whereas I am a total technology freak. I would upgrade every year and budget over £2000 selling last years model on to recover. Because it's a shared living room we need to buy together, so that never happens.
One persistent argument is "wait until next year" but now and then with tech there is a sweet spot to invest. There is a breakthrough in performance and the costs. Is this the case with this television, or maybe that was the case last year? or maybe it is due to be obliterated next year?

You need to set the listening distance so the sound hits your ears at the correct time as you see the lip movement. Isn't that the definition of lip sync?
lfarrand
7 Oct 17#134
You are correct, you can calibrate the listening distance - horizontal and vertical, however I'm not sure what that has to do with lip syncing.
collectorcol
7 Oct 17#133
Never owned a soundbar but every Receiver I've had, currently a Denon AVR2300, needs calibrating to set the correct listening distance. Is this not the case with a sound bar?

7 Oct 17#132
Are you sure it's a sound bar issue? I'm pretty sure it's a TV issue. A few other people have also reported the same issue. See here: avforums.com/thr…74/

I always go for the latest oled lg tv every year just to test the tv out, I sell the previous model. Normally there's not much difference in picture quality or sound, but I immediately notices a significant improvement with picture and sound, the increased brightness does make a difference and the new atmos speakers also make a huge difference, I feel like it has way more vibrant colours too, main use for the tv is netflix and bluray movies, cant wait to test 4k blu ray. Also yes I will probably get the B8 next year, unless i see the E8 on sale. 3D is overrated as amazing as it is, I watched maybe two 3d movies on my older lg oled but i will take the improved picture quality over 3d any day. Especially since 3d always reduces the colour. Other than that you're getting 6 months of netflix. But honestly if you wont be using a soundbar, or home cinema the B7 is a clear winner for the crazy atmos speakers,e.g in one of the movie scenes it was raining and it literally felt like it was raining around me :P

My uni workplace has a scheme which offers discounted Currys voucher. I understand that I have to top up a card with enough cash to cover the purchase (which arrives in the post), but I'm not sure if I can pay for the TV online or do I have to purchase instore? Can some one enlighten me please?

I bought the 65" from Richer Sounds a couple of weeks ago. I paid £2849, but they price matched it with Currys a couple of days later to £2649 and then beat it by £20, so I paid £2629 in the end. I bought the LG OTW420B wall mount and it's a solid piece of kit. I've mounted mine on the wall with four RigiFix M6 wall bolts and it's not going anywhere! I upgraded from a 55" 1080P Samsung F8000 LCD, and I'm liking the deep blacks, sharp picture and responsive UI. The only negative point so far is that I can't adjust the sound to match the picture, so I'm seeing pretty bad lip sync issues. I've got sound going through the HDMI ARC to a soundbar.

QLED is the next step of Samsungs 2016 Quantum Dot technology, not OLED.
OLED emits its own light. QLED relies on the back-light panel passing light through the QLED semiconductor particles. This is similar to how LCD technology currently works.
In short, OLED is still better.

The B7 & C7 are identical in picture quality. The only difference is cosmetics. C7 has a black bezel and in my opinion a nicer stand. The £1200/£700 cheaper isn’t really relevant, it’s just what Currys had set as their original RRP.

Gutted I can no longer get one. Glad I didn't try display in shop for the 3D as prob be more upset.
Still happy with Samsung PNE516500 a 5hink the code is. Anyways 51inch Samsung Plasma. Good input lag but the active 3D ain't that great as it dims the screen so much. Looking for the next wow tv but really want 3D. Just shame I missed out on the 2016 version.

If they had kept 3D I would have been tempted for a 65inch version. However can't find last year's model anyways and not willing to upgrade from a 51 plasma to 55 as don't think it would feel much of an upgrade.
Not that anyone cares about a random guy waffling after a hard night shift. But every time I see one of these deals it was either the 55 or now this year's model.
Couldn't bring myself to spending the 3.5k when I first started reading about OLED and now they removed 3D feel I have missed out as can't find 2016 LG 65 OLED anywhere :0(

Better input lag, WEB OS 3.5, Active HDR, apparently *slightly* better black and contrast performance. Not enough for me to upgrade. Will wait for 2018 lineup. I also have a massive 3D library which in conjunction with the C6, gives the best 3D image to date on any set.

It's a bit of a pain, but what I tend to do with my plasma if I'm pausing anything for a bit, is put it on standby. Spending that much on a TV, I wouldn't want to do anything to mess it up!

That depends on how much HDR content you're feeding it. The Q7 and XE93 do have advantages in HDR, especially in well lit rooms but for normal viewing an OLED is hard to beat.

Anyone have any idea what is actually covered in the Currys warranty ?.
I need to phone Richer Sounds to find out what is and what isn't covered,
I would not like my TV repaired but a in house repairer with Currys if that is what they still do,
My C6 is only covered for 1 year with the manufacturers warranty and the the next 5 years with Richer sounds,
When you register the TV they try to sell you their insurance from Domestic and General, even thought the number was in the box with the TV,
They offer a 2 year cover including accidental damage which is not covered by the manufacturers warranty, for £140.40,
but if you don't take it out straight away the price will go up if you wait for a year, so you don't have 2 policies running in the same year,
But they want you to take it out to run in tandem with the manufacturers warranty,
With warranty you need to make sure you know what is covered,
Are parts & labour covered,
is it repaired by LG,
Will they replace the TV like for like,
Will they cover screen burn.

As far a can tell its a total lottery ,I’ve heard of People Send 3 or 4 back on the bounce
(in which case if there is a problem, one would expect the warranty to cover it)
But this apparently performs just as well. I’ve seen them side by side in currys and seems allot brighter.
currys.co.uk/gbu…tml
look on ebay and amazon , you can get cheap good quality ones from either and one is holding up my C7 now
good luck
Does this have a wall mount with it, or do you need to buy a wall mount ?
If I need to buy, is there a certain model needed ?
Apologies for the dumb questions, never wall mounted a TV before, so just checking before purchasing
Cheers
Can it?
Apparently the LG's a brighter set, with a quick response time and a better interface.. but the Sony has an incredible picture and processing etc.
What would the general consensus be then folks? The difference is obviously £500, but that's nothing over the course of ten years or so.
So yeah, MY set is flawless for MY needs
Input lag in HDR modes and Screen Tearing are 2 of the main issues.
Another thing to consider is that it needs the LG T8 bracket to connect to the sound bar and Curry's are charging something ridiculous for it. However, I've heard that if you go in store and ask them to throw it in for free then they will go for it.
Anyone have any recommendations on the best gaming TV or a cheaper type ?
PS4 Pro looks great, a PC with a powerful graphics card looks amazing.
Reasons to upgrade for me;
4K
Smart TV features (slow/limited on the Samsung)
HDR
Samsung has around 40ms input lag so I never really play games on it
^ justifies it 100x over.
Is this not the case with a sound bar?
Hopefully it will be resolved through a firmware update.

It's got rave reviews all round although I wouldn't take too much notice of Which? as the only difference between the C7 and B7 is the stand so not sure how that's equates to a 2% difference in score.
I understand that I have to top up a card with enough cash to cover the purchase (which arrives in the post), but I'm not sure if I can pay for the TV online or do I have to purchase instore?
Can some one enlighten me please?
Hence why I've got a banger and ain't been on holiday for years - but have a decent TV!!
Just interested on real world difference as the 2017 range is dropping and fancy a 65inch OLED but gutted no 3D
Just reserved mine

I’m giving you plenty of evidence that both sets are the same except cosmetics and you’ve just said I’m wrong which is factually incorrect.
”Alternatively, if you can live with a slightly less attractive silvery frame around your picture and a less heavy duty, less opulent looking stand, you can currently save around £250 (close to $1,000 in the US) by buying an OLED55B7 instead.“
Edit: c6 not c7, apologies
Years ago Sennheiser cordless headphones packed up partner went to Richer Sounds in Liverpool for replacement thinking out of guaranty. They checked their records and found out was still in the two years guaranty period and bring back and replaced with new. That is good service.
OLED emits its own light. QLED relies on the back-light panel passing light through the QLED semiconductor particles. This is similar to how LCD technology currently works.
In short, OLED is still better.
