The title says gaming laptop yet doesn't list the GPU which might be worth amending?
Gormond
9 Oct 17#5
A 950m is a few years old now and not great for games. You should look.for a 1050 minimum - preferably a 1060 if gaming is your focus here.
However if you want a general purpose laptop that can play the odd game at medium settings then this is an okay deal.
Rich44 to Gormond
9 Oct 17#12
Looking for that GPU at this price point?
Gormond to Rich44
9 Oct 17#14
Doubt you will get one at this price.
My point was that if you are after a gaming laptop then I would save up and spend a little (£100) more or you will be disappointed.
For example, on FHD medium graphics expect about 20-30fps average on games like PUBG, XCOM 2, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Witcher 3...

Every laptop deal in this site is a magnet for the "gaming purists" claiming to spend way more money for better specs
Gormond to manowarbruno
9 Oct 17#17
Nonsense, this is listed as a "Gaming Laptop" yet has an old low end graphics card.
You don't need to spend way more money for a laptop with an SSD and Geforce 1050 - we are talking about £100 which is about 15% more which in the long run is worth it for gaming IMO.
I was pointing this out as I was trying to be helpful and didn't want someone to buy this on the merit that it's a gaming laptop then get 20fps average on PUBG and wish they spend a bit more.
I still gave it hot btw as it's a fast processor and a good price so for other uses its good value - just not gaming as per the title.

Can't see any with an i7, mostly quad core i5s which is perfectly balanced for a 1050.
Although on userbenchmark.com the 7300 comes 134/979 where as the 6700 comes 152/179 so it should be better than this.
I've had 'issues' with HP Laptops in the past, so I would personally avoid, unfortunately ...
I've seen a few MSI Laptops randomly about on HUKD over the last year or two too, lol.
I'm intrigued, is MSI any good? (or is it cheap junk that's fit for nothing, etc?).

Guess I have been lucky as I haven't had any issues with HP laptops or computers in the past.
I haven't personally tried MSI for laptops (although I have been buying their motherboards for years) but any family/friends with them have had no issues.
Only laptop I have had break on me (touch wood) was a Sony but they fixed it within the warranty without any issues.

just specced a 17” optimus viii on pcspeciallist:
i7-7700hq 128gb ssd only 4Gb ram but u can get extra memory cheaper elsewhere than speccing it on the site geforce 1050ti graphics (or 1050 is cheaper)

It has a dedicated graphics card? Then it's a gaming laptop, it's the only reason the vast majority of users would want a laptop with graphic card...
A ps one has lower specs than a modern freeview board... and it's still a gaming device, a £50 smartphone is still a smartphone despite the price, etc.
BTW, pick a random laptop deal like the one you recommend and count how many comments you can find saying "spend 20% more to get a decent laptop " I bet if someone post a deal for a watercooled dual 1080,someone will show up to say it's not a proper gaming PC cause it's not cooled by liquid nitrogen
Gormond to manowarbruno
10 Oct 17#52
You have missed my point. I was informing people that this would not be good as a gaming laptop as it will struggle to play modern games.
And no, no one with any sense would tell someone to spend more if a PC had dual 1080s, don't be silly.
Better to spend 20% more for something that actually does the job you want it to do than have something slightly cheaper that can't.

£900 is actually not a bad price for a 17 inch screen which seems to go for huge premiums nowadays, probably due to the reduced popularity.

Depends what you are doing but if it's just a general laptop look for:
Screen: look for atleast Full HD (1920 X 1080) - Makes text clearer.
Processor: Get a Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 - Makes applications (like MS word and so forth) run fast.
Memory: 4GB or over (allows you to open multiple things at once)
Storage: SSD (make the computer boot up and applications load very fast).
Weight: look for lightweight if your carrying it - under 2KG if you can.
Battery: Aim for 8 hours or more. So you don't have to take a charger with you and be next to a plug socket.
An Acer Swift 3 looks like a good bet for £500 amzn.eu/cr3…stz
If you want a dedicated graphics card for games then this isn't that bad but you have to spend more and make compremises on battery life, size and weight (portability).
