Kaspersky Free is now available in the UK. Kaspersky's anti-virus products are rated high in many independent lab tests e.g. av-test.org/en/…16/

It provides standard anti-virus protection, which usually costs £15 a year for a 1-user for their "Kaspersky Anti Virus" product. It's IMO a cleaner alternative to the likes of AVG, Avira and Avast.

I personally uninstall their bundled VPN software "Kaspersky Secure Connection", which offers 200MB/day access to their VPN - may be useful when you're out and about using public hotspots, but not for me.

Thanks for sharing @Darude . I've got Kaspersky Internet Security on a few of the families laptops/PC's and find it good - doesn't seem to hog the system the way some previous anti virus software has and is normally quick to update / respond to issues. Not sure how the free version compares but if it uses same detection engine etc then it would be my first choice

Oooh! This being free is new! I signed up to barclays bank to get kaspersky for free a few years back. Been using kaspersky since mid 2000's always thought it was the best of the picks overall. Well time to close the barclays account it would seem!

HOTT as long as you're okay with sending all your files to be scanned on Russian servers and then read by their intelligence service. Putin has taps on Kaspersky's servers.

... and the same applies to every country everywhere. Assume that files sent to "the cloud" are on servers in various different countries, and each respective intelligence service will hapily slurp them up for future use.

As far as the VPN goes, bear in mind the UK government now routinely monitors your browsing.

theguardian.com/wor…per

Why does this matter if you're not a terrorist? Because at some point they'll be hacked and your browsing habits will become accessible to all, banks, credit cards, social media sites, etc.

IT guy here - I wouldn't trust this software as far as I could throw it. And yes, you could make the same arguments about data being taken off your PC with something like Microsoft's Security Essentials but the difference is Kaspersky will face no consequences if it turns out they've been data mining all your personal information. Microsoft would.

If you have Win 10 the Yanks are spying in you so what's the difference?
I used to have Kaspersky free with Barclays but the problem was that it would run the cpu to 100% for the first 20 mins at start up and then run constantly in the background. I spent days on online forums doing tweaks that they mentioned as it seemed then (3 years ago) that it was a very common problem.Maybe things have changed but if you have it installed have a look on task manager now and then and see if it's giving you high cpu usage.
athunder to toiletseatlicker

Been using it for years myself, have the Total secruity version, watched the cpu usage a bit, goes from 0% to 0.5% mostly (briefly 1.5%). Never had any issues with it.

I use to use this but jumped ship a few years ago when they started to bloat their suite and it started to become slow (not painfully slow like McAfee) went to Noton360 seems a good time to see if they have gone back to basics.

9 Oct 17 #55
In my opinion Kaspersky has been the best performing av product for a very long time. Its what I use to remove stuff when other products fail.

It is well known that all US suppliers are legally obliged to provide backdoors for their products.

What better software to use for espionage? It scans every single file on your computer - whether it is a web link, a text file or a an image. It regular updates itself and communicates both ways and has privileged access to your computer.

Nowadays av products scan files as you download them or save them, so it knows everything. You cant hide anything.

The alternative is not to have an av programme and then seriously compromise your computer within weeks.

"all your bases are belong to us" - as the old saying goes
ZedKay
9 Oct 17 #56
Just to throw in my penny's worth, I've used Kaspersky in the past with no issues and it seems to work well but there are plenty of alternatives.

From a purely user friendly stand point, I'd say Bitdefender Free is the easiest to use and very light on system resources and just works in the background without needing any attention.

Indeed.

The amount of idiocy that people on here post beggars belief.

If you buy a Chinese laptop, it's the Chinese government spying on you (and seeing what groceries you buy from Sainsbury's every week). If you buy an anti-virus, it's the Russian KBG tracking all your movements down to the pub, taking your dog for a walk etc.

Why the hell would the Chinese or Russian government be interested in you?

Yet these people are quite happy to use anything from the US even though it's clear from Snowden that there really are tons of NSA backdoors, surveillance and monitoring in virtually every product.

Paranoid xenophobia.

After reading all the comments I am surprised that such a high percentage of people on here supposedly care about their privacy, yet collectively done nothing before the tory's Snooper's charter became law this year. How many of you blabbing on here about Kaspersky on an on-line forum actually complained to your local MP's to make you feelings known? Signed petitions? joined protests? anyone?

We live in a mass surveillance state and we are allowing things to get worse, people worrying about the Russians spying seriously need to get a bloody grip, we have far more pressing concerns much closer to home with regards to our privacy and on-line security.

There are plenty of good AV products out there and I have used close to all of them. They have always failed me at some stage, which is why I have tried them all.

No matter how good, Avast, AVG, Comodo, IOBIT, mcafee, Nortons, Sophos, NOD (ESET), F-Secure, and plenty of others, they have all failed in one respect or another. The only way I have been able to clean infections once they have happened - which the programmes failed to pick up - is by a combination of:

(1) Malwarebytes
(2) Kaspersky free online scanner (and remover)

My worst experiences have been with Nortons, McAfee and Webroot. Nortons and McAfee may have improved now but they were abysmal when I used them. people thought they were protected because they weren't reporting infections but the computers were riddled with malware. McAfee users may as well have had viruses because the software crippled computers. Also the enterprise versions of these products are very different from the standalone home user ones.

Kaspersky may have areas where it is not the strongest in any given year but is the best for all round consistency.
fiqqer
9 Oct 17 #76
And then you end up with something like cryptolocker - you are leaving your front door open, inviting burglars in. Most of the av products now have an inbuilt firewall - blocking intrusions. Your computer is being scanned many dozens times a day for vulnerabilities. Not protecting yourself even with a free product doesn't make sense.
fiqqer

Microsoft's av efforts have always been a joke. They release a product which is then not supported so quickly becomes redundant. Luckily there are so many serious alternatives.

I wouldn't trust Kaspersky based on the article.

techradar.com reviews Avira

Avira Free Antivirus
which continues to score highly on AV-TEST's stringent testing program, quashing 99.7% of tested threats, and it generally doesn't put too big a burden on your hardware.
It has a clean, friendly interface, and throws up minimal false positives. The introduction of a free security suite to optionally run alongside it – with ransomware and phishing protection, a 500MB/month VPN and various speedup promises – just sweetens the deal. This is one of the best free antivirus packages of 2017.

Anyway, back to the product in the thread.

Just been testing Kaspersky Free (KF) compared to Kaspersky Total Security (TS) on my other laptop.

KF's malicious website / web content blocking is very, very, crude. It nukes entire (dodgy) pages rather than the rogue elements eg. known adware etc. Go to a torrent or a football streaming site and KF's notifications light up a Christmas tree virtually preventing you from viewing the page in its original form. TS is VASTLY more sophisticated in this regard and much much less intrusive.

That for me is enough of a dealbreaker.

I'd rather pay £7 for another TS licence (or by Internet Security) than use KF - the AV engine is probably fine but it's otherwise simply too limited, whereas TS is simply excellent all around

I am running on a month's free McAfee I got with my new Yoga and it doesn't seem to be as slow and intrusive as I remember it with a previous new PC I got a few years ago but I can't wait to get back to Eset!

The reason I've not installed Eset yet is because my old licence elapsed last week and so am merely trying to buy my time to get the free trial period to overlap with Black Friday to then get a 3 year multi device licence from them in their yearly deals.

Not had much experience with Kaspersky and even though I could get it free by virtue of having a Barclays account I chose not to, nothing to do with them being Ruski either.

I blew them out instantly because when I called their customer service number out of curiosity no one answered yet a minute later I got a call back from "Internet security support' with matey's name being something like Arjun or Vihaan from downtown New Delhi :poop:

When you call Eset with a problem you speak to an Andy or a Vince at their UK hub in Bournemouth, my life their customer service is second to none! Nothing is too much of a problem for them and they'll even give your PC an impromptu health check whilst sorting your issue out remotely. Been using them ever since they gave away free licences for life on XP as part of their Nod 32 beta programme and been more than happy to pay for their product on every OS since Vista.

Why change when you know the product, trust it and have total confidence in their customer support?

The recent "controversy" about the Russians using Kaspersky to spy on people is a load of rubbish.

The Wall Street Journal stated that An NSA hacker flouted protocol two years ago by taking work home to a personal computer that ran Kaspersky software.

So a rogue employee took sensitive information from a secure facility, the NSA no less, to his obviously less secure home computer, and they jumped to the conclusion that because the computer was running Kaspersky (which is Russian) it was clearly the thing that compromised all the data. I don't even think it has been definitively proven that the employee's home computer was the source that was compromised.

Somehow, If the Russians can hack elections, I doubt they need the services of an anti-virus company to hack computers belonging to employees of the NSA.

Let's not forget stories like this one: independent.co.uk/new…tml
It's the story of a teenager hacking into the Pentagon from his bedroom.

I think the Americans are just looking for excuses to drive out competition from international companies - see also the recent case of Bombardier.

Kaspersky is an excellent anti-virus product. Have some heat!

Most people's browsing history consists of mind numbing social media, the purchase histories are all of ugly garments several sizes too small. Av programmes needs to be more sophisticated it is not so much about viruses now but malicious code. Programmes need to be more sophisticated for new threats. Programmes need to be updated daily to pick up on these ever changing threats.
