Just dropped again to £400 (was £450 yesterday). I've caved and decided to go for one.

Had a 3% Amex discount in my account too and there's still £10 Quidco available.

Average Joe does not even buy this phone. There are so many articles on internet about this issue and how to connect the phone to the TV ,that most owners I guess care about this issue and were caught ungaurded. It is better to make an informed choice.

Ok but I don't think average Joe will be connecting his phone up to screens on a regular basis will they- I have never seen anyone connect a phone to a screen- not in business or anything. I am sure some people will, but it is not the usual use of a phone so I doubt the loss of this feature will register with most.

To connect it to various screens available every where and watch picture , photos , videos in high resolution. Also can be used as Android computer. No need to to carry laptop / tablet when your phone will just do.

Why would I want Displayport alternate mode again?

Bought this as soon as it was released in October last year. Sitting in the drawer with Spigen case and screen protector. Great Phone but have not much used as I use Samsung Note 4 for day to day work.

Ordered last night through TCB but haven't received confirmation email yet and not tracked. This always happens with CPW & TCB have to ring them and then of course no cash back. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi @shaun442k I got it through mobiles.co.uk whose warranty is only a year, but I've checked on the Huawei website and they do a 2 year warranty on their products and I'm (just!) within the 2 years. So hopefully I can send it back and they'll either chuck a new battery in for me to last until I upgrade or (fingers crossed, potentially wishful thinking) might replace it with their own equivalent current device.

My Pixel XL just got delivered today, but after laughing in the face of the proposed pricing of the Pixel 2 XL, I'm now seriously considering returning and going for the upgrade... I guess I'm sucker for a keynote

Through a work scheme I get 9% off at Currys, so I'd be looking at £727 for a Pixel 2 XL with Google Home Mini. Very tempting...

In other news, Huawei screwed up the 'repair' of my Nexus 6P and introduced some debris over the camera lens. So I'll also have to go through the rigmarole of another CPW warranty repair :unamused:

No displayport alternate mode . So does not connect to directly TV or monitor like S8 , Note 8 or LG V30 . S8 and Note 8 can be used as computer with dex dock and Andronimium screen.

In the HIGHLY unlikely event that you have an iPhone 7, OnePlus 5, Pixel and Note 8, why?

I literally can’t get my head around the points you are attempting to make, 60fps in Chrome?

Looks like the Pixel 2 has the contract controlling esim and a user controlled sim slot.
The user friendly 3.5mm analogue headphone socket has gone now.

This is half the cost of the 2.

Fascinates me that you can come to that conclusion from a rational argument based on factual evidence.

I've had every iPhone, and with every release of iOS Apple became more intent on crippling those with older devices, forcing an upgrade. For me personally, thats not an issue, as I've bought every iPhone every year until the 8. My issue is with the form over function approach they've been taking since Steve Jobs passed. For anyone who actually uses their devices as more than a fancy facebook toy to show to friends, iOS is crippled when it comes to productivity. Heck, the screens keep getting larger yet you still can't multitask outside of the iPad. When I try to multitask I have to double click, wait for the animations to catch up, then scroll sideways and hope that the momentum animation stops like its supposed to, on the app that I want. Yet it rarely does so.

Baffled as to why so many people go on the defensive on the internet. I'm open minded and have no allegiances to corporations that have nothing to do with me, and only value people for their money and nothing more.

For the sake of balance:

iPhone sucks at productivity, and software has been a buggy mess since iOS 9/10. No customisation options. That's about all I have against it. The latter isnt even really an issue unless you stare at your home screen all day.

OnePlus 5 lags like hell yet has the best non-Apple hardware going currently, cant maintain anywhere near 60fps in apps like chrome, yet the Google Pixel and the Note 8 I have manage just fine. Camera is garbage. Software is similarly buggy, but still better than iOS and probably Oreo as far as stability goes. The speaker is awful. Earpiece sound for calls is average at best, painful at worst.

I've had a Nexus 4, 5 and currently 6P. It's a shame that the days of £400 Nexus devices are long gone. The 4 was around £270 and my 6P was £430 new the day it came out from what I remember. The Pixel was something like £720 despite only releasing a year after the 6P with a £300 price increase.

I'm holding out for the Pixel 2 XL today and hoping that it costs £720-£750...maybe £799 as an absolute limit.

£800 seems massively high but it's not really any different than a Galaxy or iPhone price which is the kind of phone they designed it to compete against.

If it's £850 or £899 or something insane I'll pick up one of these old models from Carphone Warehouse this evening.

Performance isn't even that different between them all. I took my 6P into Argos where they had a Pixel XL and Note 8 demo unit and the Pixel XL was fastest, then my 2 year old 6P was practically the same speed as the Note 8, maybe marginally slower.

This was a 2 year old £430 phone vs a brand new £870 one.

I'm more than confident that the XL could get another year and a half of solid use out of it - or 2 years at a stretch even if you bought it now.

Practically nothing is wrong with my 6P and it's still fantastically fast, but the battery is failing and I can't deal with the 32gb storage. I could probably run it for a 3rd year if I tried.

That's what people need to understand; the best hardware in the world won't help if Samsung decides to plaster their heavy overlay on top that can slow everything down. Benchmarks are a terrible, terrible way of gauging how a phone behaves in real life.

I am an Android phone user, have been since the dawn of smartphones (currently using an HTC U11).

It's almost embarrassing how someone can call someone else a child before resorting to nonsensical insults

Neither of you know what you're talking about, and i question if you even digested my previous post properly.

I shouldn't even bother explaining it to you, but I will.

The iPhone has a very slow animation speed compared to the oneplus 5.

This means that the moment you tap on an app, the iPhone is automatically slower than the oneplus 5 at opening that app. The animation speed on the oneplus 5 is quick enough that it takes half the time to open an app. We're talking about something small, like a second or so if that, but in day to day usage that makes everything seem quicker.

Its not even about the processor, the nvme SSD in the iPhone is significantly faster than the UFS storage in most high end android phones, but what's the point if they cripple the OS speed on purpose for what they perceive as being fancy animations?

But anyway, disagree with facts all you want, you're not exactly alone on the internet when it comes to that. The butthurt is real. I can't quite fathom how people are so offended by one single aspect (and probably the only aspect) of a random android phone being better than the almighty iPhone.
ianthebeard
4 Oct 17 #138
@cmpaterson How did you go about claiming? Did you take out a separate warranty originally or does the warranty come with the handset regardless? The battery has been driving me mad for months so I've been carrying a 10,000mAh power bank with me everywhere!

4 Oct 17 #137
So if you are offered the same phone with a memory card slot or without what would you take?I can guarantee everytime a memory card slot.Fact is 32gb isn't enough for most and cloud storage is as good as the signal on YOUR phone.People are allowed to have an opinion without being shouted down or vilified .Decent deal no doubt but the fact remains it's let down with lack of memory no water proofing or wireless charging and the look of the phone is so old fashioned with the front screen having so much wasted bezel
LadyEleanor
4 Oct 17 #136
New one, rumours have it, might be just an esim phone. ESIM is code for 'permanently locked to EE'. At least until other networks sign contracts to use Apple as a CPW like agent.
That could mean that these more useful phones keep their value.
umirza85
4 Oct 17 #135
Wrong....I'm no apple fanboi but the software is where they are competitive. A macbook air can run 12 hrs almost with Mac OS, same laptop in Windows gets maybe 6-8 if lucky.

Same goes for iOS, it's much better optimised..... because they control the hardware.

Rant and be an android fanboi all you want. You're just perpetuating the reasons why everyone hates you fanbois on both sides of the fence.

MattP79
3 Oct 17 #132
That primarily affects products and services sold "off-premises" or at distance. For in-store purchase no retailer is compelled to offer a refund on an unwanted purchase unless it is part of their published policy which forms part of the original sale contract. Should other reasons necessitate the return of a purchase then different rules apply.

I’m not an iPhone man at all, but that comment is utterly wrong and almost silly.

Modern phones can run graphically intensive games, an animation (not really sure what you are referring to specifically) would not slow one down
MattP79
3 Oct 17 #128
Technically CPW no longer exists. Dixons and CPW merged to form Dixons Carphone. A larger, profit making, UK multinational.

To answer your second point a product warranty would still be valid in the event the retailer ceased trading. Rather than the retailer manage the return of the device to the UK supplier for repair you would need to do so yourself.

3 Oct 17 #123
Not really

Apple clutter their OS by having stupidly slow and unnecessary animations, where as oneplus have fast and snappy animations. This in turn makes usage of the phone a lot quicker.

Throw all the specs you want at an iPhone, Apples poor software decisions are the deciding factor.

I'm off a similar view but have been stung on refurbished phones and so am left trying to find bargain flagships. Had it been a week ago, I may have gone for this. However, I'm taking delivery of a Samsung S8 later on this week. It's £475 (from Amazon Germany) and so quite a bit more expensive but the bigger and better screen, faster processor and bezel less design should compensate. If I'm lucky, I might also get a free wireless charger and 64gb memory card.

Was in the same situation a good few years ago. Decided to step down to a mid range phone thinking it would suit me fine. Regretted it big time. Now, I'll only buy flagship phones. But of course, I'm not going to spend £400+, so I buy last years like you're thinking about - refurbished to save some more cash. Now I upgrade every 2 years or so.

Having just lost my OP3 I was going to go for the Pixel or XL. The thing that swayed me back to One Plus was the amount of £ I will save by it being Dual Sim. I would also struggle to get used to having to turn off the screen with the button on the side. (as opposed to the excellent double tap on the FP sensor on the OP.)

3 Oct 17 #85
Also just to add that the pixel 2 XL won't be out until mid November, at a cost of >£800 for the 64gb version.

Friend has had the XL since day 1, and its still hair as smooth as it was.

Its obviously not as fast as any current phone, and it was slower than every other phone when it was released too, but no one cares because of the 60fps animations.

Case in point, the oneplus 5 I'm using is easily the fastest phone in day to day use, even beating the iPhone 8/X. Downside is all that power yet everything stutters, especially chrome. On the pixel XL, even the poor chrome app runs smoothly and with ads (I have AdAway on OP5).

Bottom line is, if you think £400 is still too expensive, you should probably just get a cheap oneplus 3T or an LG G6 for less.
rob5ta

I'm rather light user, have few apps and very few photos/videos and have around 6GB left on 32GB phone. I'm on 6P nearly two years now and really struggling to find a replacement... I'm not going to spend £700 on new phone, that's crazy, so I'm considering something from midrange, like Moto Z Play/ G5S Plus or used galaxy S7 Edge/ HTC U11 for around £300.

I went for the standard Pixel 128GB recently, decided the 128GB model was of more use to me than the slightly bigger screen and battery of the XL for the same price. Really love this phone, Oreo is slick, updates every month, camera is just fantastic.

Will be interesting to see what v2 brings, but it won't be cheap. These are flagship phone to compete with the iPhone, so £600-£700 or maybe more for higher memory models is likely.

I could just order online to click and collect, and then return for a refund if something better comes out after the Pixel 2's launch?

Hmm...while benchmarks are a good indicator, I read recently a review on the Iphone8 and it said although the benchmarks blew everything way, it still start lagging with certain apps.

For those of you worried about 32GB storage. This is my Pixel after 10 months usage (I have 11GB worth of apps and System takes up 7.7GB). I've got smart storage setup so pics/videos over 30 days are deleted off the device as they are backed up full resolution to the cloud and easy to retrieve when you need them.

Sorry it was the S7 Edge I returned, not S8. Looking at benchmark scores, Pixel is better than S7 with Antutu, Vellamo, GFXBench and Basemark. S7 is only better on the GeekBench scores.

Either way, it's the software that makes the Pixel even faster and smoother without the trash on it that Samsung give.

I thought about that when I was first offered it but was surprised to find the 6P selling for higher prices on eBay. I just checked again and that's still the case.

Placed my order for the Pixel XL. If tomorrow's announcement does wow me I can always return. Thanks OP.

3 Oct 17 #53
I don't think you should compare 6p with pixel.
nexus 6p was manufactured by Huawei, who doesn't agree well with google at the time, huawei had quite limited their contribution to 6p.
pixel would be a totally different story, with google taking over the business unit from HTC,
I can see the possibility of them reducing the price for pixel 1 while releasing pixel 2.
like apple is doing.

32GB should be fine for the vast majority of users with the unlimited photo back up that's included.
HottyHotty
3 Oct 17 #50
I think 32gb is enough for most people, especially with no storage needed for photos.

Saying that I recently downgraded from a 64Gb S6 edge to a 32gb S7 edge. £15 spent on gearbest and hey presto now have an extra 64Gb for netflix downloads etc. Still think SD cards for 'unnecessary storage' like that are the way to go.

Good buy.
But sceptical about CPW
If anything went wrong.

There losing money hand over fist ,
Stores are like the Mary Celeste!

Shouldn't joke,
But seriously, we're would one stand if they went into Administration, and there was an issue with handset?

Very tempted, though it's not very portable, pocket wise.

Pixel XL 2 is made by LG and will likely have same screen as V30. Pixel 2 is made by HTC.

Google just bought HTC's smartphone design team so going forward will be pulling more resources inhouse, heading in the direction of how Apple makes the iPhone which can only be a good thing imo.

Amazing price for this but 32gb will be used up quickly. If the 128gb came down in price I might get that.

mackdaddy to cmpaterson
3 Oct 17 #27
Had you bought the 6P directly from Google?

I'd bought my 6P from CPW and it is currently with Huawei to fix the dodgy battery issue. CPW offered me a Galaxy S7 or Xperia XZ to go away. They said they're unable to offer Pixels as warranty replacements.
shel38 to mackdaddy
3 Oct 17 #34
Can you get it fixed if you've had it over a year? Also waiting for pixel 2 to come out but my 6P battery issue is really doing my head in at the moment. Where so I stand with this? Didn't know I could get anything done about it.
mackdaddy to shel38
3 Oct 17 #40
All phones have two year warranties.

CPW's system was actually showing that my phone was 'out of warranty period', but they overrode their system as the phone wasn't released >2 years ago.

I just called them for an update on my case and have been told that Huawei have done the repair, so no 'free' Pixel XL for me

I might still go for this CPW Pixel XL offer though. I could probably get ~£150 for a 'manufacturer refurbished' 6P.

The Pixel 2XL leaks suggest an RRP of $849, which will translate to a minimum £799, perhaps even £849.

LOL.
You may as well start considering your options now. The price will be the same as every other flagship from a major manufacturer.
Gone are the days of the Nexus range with good specs and a decent price. Pixel is all about premium with high prices to match.

This is a better deal than a oneplus 5 (which I can get for about the same price, after student discount)?
HottyHotty to andisitadeal
3 Oct 17 #30
Yes. Especially if you value the camera and software updates.

In regards to this thread in general: personally if I wanted one I'd grab one rather than waiting until tomorrow. Can always return.

Also new version is likely to be £800-£1000 from what I've read, don't see this price of this dropping that much more if at all. They happily keep iPhones/S7s Etc on sale for months and months after the new one drops. Although there may be limited stock.

Google Pixel has a better camera and a higher resolution screen.

Oneplus 5 has 2gb more ram, a better processor and double the storage.

To be honest, I'd say spend the extra £50 and get the Oneplus, but you're able to use the student discount for me it's a no brainer.

I decided to drop £500 on the 8gb, 128gb version because my £150 Moto G4 performance after 8 months was traumatising. This thing is amazing. Snapdragon 835 + lots of ram = slices through apps like a hot knife through butter. It's so smooth (for now). The fingerprint reader is instantaneous. I am an extremely satisfied customer for the week I've had it.

It may not be officially waterproof but people on youtube are dunking it in glasses of water and it lives. Also, who spends £400 on a phone and doesn't get fully comp insurance?

-Opinion from a Oneplus5 owner.

Can't go wrong with the Wileyfox Swift 2X or the Moto G5. Both appear in everyone's "best budget mobiles" list. All phones will have basically the same wifi though, so it's not a feature you necessarily need to look for specifically.

You could always keep it in the box for a week and return it should there be a further drop... as they only have 32GB in black left, I was concerned whatever stock is left might start shifting at this price pretty quickly.

Check CPW's return policy - they state you can't return a sim free phone for a refund if the phone is bought in store, only exchange.

I think you can return to a store for a refund if bought online.
