Edited: All of the CPW deals for the XL have vanished. Only EE seem to be offering any contracts for the XL, and I've only seen Pixel 2 deals on CPW, EE and Mobiles.co.uk - if you see anywhere else offering anything please let me know! Deals below updated

I need a new phone and quite like the look of the Pixel 2 XL, so I've gone through all the deals on all of the sites to try and find the best deals currently available. I've looked for two things - cheapest overall deal and cheapest deal over 24 months with a decent amount of data (at least 5GB).

As they were only announced yesterday they're only in a couple of places, so I'll try to keep this updated as more sites offer the phones:

I haven't seen any deals for the 128GB Pixel 2 yet - will add if I find any.

Results follow:

Pixel 2 64GB with free Google Home Mini
Cheapest overall deal:
Carphone Warehouse - EE (first deal at link) . 1 month contract, pay £589 upfront and £13.99 per month for 250 minutes, 250MB and unlimited texts. Cancel after one month and total cost is £602.99 (cheaper than buying outright at £629)

Best deal over 24 months with at least 5GB data:
Mobiles.co.uk - EE (first deal at link). 24 month contract, pay £225 upfront and £27.99 per month for unlimited minutes and texts and 5GB data (4G). TCO: £896.76

Cheapest over 24 months (including change of contract):
Take the first deal from CPW and grab a £12 per month sim only deal from Three (12 months - link) for Unlimited minutes and texts and 12GB data. TCO over 24 months: £878.99. There's only £20 in it, so you may be better off with the Mobiles.co.uk deal above and not having to worry about phones being locked and changing contracts.
Note: you will need to check that the phone is unlocked or unlockable. EE say that it is free to unlock at the end of the contract or after 6 months in a contract - so best to check.

Pixel 2 128GB with free Google Home Mini
Cheapest overall deal:
Carphone Warehouse - EE (first deal at link) . 1 month contract, pay £689 upfront and £13.99 per month for 250 minutes, 250MB and unlimited texts. Cancel after one month and total cost is £702.99 (cheaper than buying outright at £729)

Best deal over 24 months with at least 5GB data:
Mobiles.co.uk - EE (first deal at link). 24 month contract, pay £300 upfront and £27.99 per month for unlimited minutes and texts and 5GB data (4G). TCO: £971.76

Cheapest over 24 months (including change of contract):
Take the deal from Mobiles.co.uk listed above.

Pixel 2 XL 64GB with free Google Home Mini
Cheapest overall deal:
Buy outright from Google at link for £799

Best deal over 24 months with at least 5GB data:
EE (find on the page at link). 24 month contract, pay £9.99 upfront and £57.99 per month for unlimited minutes and texts and 8GB data (4G). TCO: £1,401.75

Best way to buy:
Buy outright from Google as above and grab a £12 per month sim only deal from Three (12 months - link) for Unlimited minutes and texts and 12GB data. TCO over 12 months: £1,087

Pixel 2 XL 128GB with free Google Home Mini
Cheapest overall deal:
Buy outright from Google at link for £899

Best deal over 24 months with at least 5GB data:
EE (find on the page at link). 24 month contract, pay £9.99 upfront and £62.99 per month for unlimited minutes and texts and 8GB data (4G). TCO: £1,521.75

Best way to buy:
Buy outright from Google as above and grab a £12 per month sim only deal from Three (12 months - link) for Unlimited minutes and texts and 12GB data. TCO over 12 months: £1,187

Hoping that we get some more deals showing up soon - none of these are amazing yet!

No headphone jack and an eSim ( a sim that is built into the phone and can't be removed) make this a big NO for me.
LukeyWolf to mgb20
5 Oct 17 #3
An eSim you serious? Google what went wrong
LadyEleanor to LukeyWolf
5 Oct 17 #29
No headphone jack is bad. They are only fishing, for now, with the esim. With HDMI also gone, The release of translate ear pods likely means ever more native functionality will get stolen away,

It is strange that our semi obsolete devices are now better.

Seriously? No headphone jack? Of all the things to copy from Apple they chose the least well received one.

There is still a slot for nano SIM card. Do your research before posting and confusing others.
RadiantDuck to mgb20
5 Oct 17 #10
Agreed about the headphone jack, but it has a standard nano sim tray as well as an e-sim, so that shouldn't bother you at all. Plus as a technology sounds like a good idea once all the UK networks support it.
Richief to mgb20
5 Oct 17 #17
I thought the eSim only worked with project Fi (googles own network) which is only in the US. I hope their is a sim slot.
stoney73 to mgb20

it also has a nano SIM, you just have to look at the specs.
jimlad21 to mgb20
5 Oct 17 #21
fool - stop spreading useless untrue infor

Both devices still have a nano-SIM slot but they also use eSIMs like that on the Apple Watch Series 3. So long as your carrier supports it, you just have to download a virtual SIM during the setup process to activate service. Needless to say, that's a welcome change if you're tired of the usual SIM swapping ritual needed for upgrading handsets.
esudl
5 Oct 17 #5
eSim, how does that effect locking of phone to network?
mgb20 to esudl
5 Oct 17 #9
As far as I understand (I might be wrong), you register the phone with your network and your number is transferred to the eSim. I don't know what happens if you decide to sell the phone later though. It also means that you cannot go to another country i.e. Spain and purchase a local sim to use in the phone. It's not proving popular with phone owners according to comments on tech forums.
stoney73 to mgb20
5 Oct 17 #19
Come on , look at the specs at least before scaremongering.
zelazny
5 Oct 17 #7
I understand it has an eSim but it only works with Project Fi (Google's network in the US) - for everywhere else it takes a nano Sim as well.

Lack of headphone port is annoying, but I've been on bluetooth headphones for a little while.

I'm waiting for some better offers on the XL - want to pay less upfront
dpb_69
5 Oct 17 #8
Awful deals. surely more will be added on the CPW website?

Why are there no vodafone upgrade offers on the Pixel XL 2
zelazny
5 Oct 17 #11
There don't seem to be any other sites offering deals yet - once some of the smaller places start to get offers in place (hopefully in the next couple of days) we should see some more competition and better deals. Currently there's the stuff on the EE website (fairly terrible offers) and the ones on Carphone Warehouse (slightly better but still room to improve)

Out of interest, does anyone have any experience of using a mobile with headphones on USB-C with an adaptor instead of a normal headphone jack? Does the plug stay in as securely? Do you find the adaptor snags on pockets or clothes and unplugs itself or anything annoying like that? Toying between the Pixel 2 XL and the S8+, and I get really annoyed with these kinds of little niggles.

Aslong as you buy a decent set of headphones it's fine. Moved from Samsung to Pixel and much prefer the pixel as it has less bloatware and the camera quality is amazing.

Thanks for the thoughts. I had a Nexus 4 way back when and loved bloat-free Android. I've adored my Samsung S6 Edge, probably my all-time favourite phone, but sorely tempted by the P2XL...

Some deals on Mobiles.co.uk to look through too, not sure about the free home mini though are all sites doing? They are owned by CPW and normally cheaper, & £15 off upfront costs with voucher code VC15OFF

5 Oct 17 #23
You just have to call when you have received it. They usually want 30 days notice but it doesn't start until you register the sim, so as long as it's not February you can call up on the day you register and cancel.

£300 more than the pixel minus the headphone slot and marginal gains for the camera and few others areas. Wow, these mobile manufacturers really are having a laugh.

Tentative. Hoping black Friday brings us some good deals.

No displayport alternate mode over USB C . So cannot work as computer like Samsung S8 or Note 8 or LG V30. Cannot directly connect to TV or monitor with HDMI or displayport like S8, Note 8 or LG V30. Big Negative. Will not support Andronium or other notebook displays. Google talk big but deliver little.

Many people like me do . Not at own home but if visiting friends and family, I can show all my photo s and videos on their 4k TV in high resolution. You can buy a cheap USB C to hdmi 2.0 convertor which works with all new Samsung and LG phones with USB C
sam_of_london to jimlad21
6 Oct 17 #62
Casting at 4k using Wifi ? Ever heard of that ? No WiFi connection can match the bandwidth of HDMI or displayport or USB C. Casting has several limitations with poor picture quality. Plus you can use phone as computer with fast wired connection. Ever heard of MHL on micro usb ? Displayport alternate mode is upgrade of that on USB C and supports 4K , HDR and HDMI 2.0
musical to sam_of_london
7 Oct 17 #69
I stream UHD HDR on 5 GHz WiFi from my router to my 4K television from Amazon, YouTube and Netflix without any problems at all. How can 1300 Mbps not be fast enough for 4K? With a modern router, the broadband connection is as likely to be a problem as the WiFi. You shouldn't mislead people.
sam_of_london to musical
7 Oct 17 #70
No WiFi never works for me for 4k even with new router. But read on internet , people said the same about casting and 4k . Anyway this is about Vesa Displayport alternate mode over usb C which supports HDMI 2.0 which is great . All the new Samsung and LG phone s support it but the Pixel phones do not because Google want s you to buy their Pixelbook which does support displayport alternate mode from USB C .

What is the use case for this (genuine question)? This seems like a solved problem with Chromecast. Do people really use their phone as a computer?

6 Oct 17 #63
Yes many people do . That is why they have Dex Dock., Androminium project. Even Windows and Motorola phone s used to come with dock . Why buy Google Pixelbook when you can use the phone. If you are going abroad or on holiday s , the advantages are endless. Also you can put upto 400gb micro USB card in the phone and have no shortage or data storage in your phone itself.

You get an adaptor in the box for the headphones!

All phones will move away from a headphone jack in the next year or so.

Usb type C headphones will give a true digital sound experience over time.

Bluetooth speakers also work!

It's only less than £30.00 cheaper than RRP.
I recommend everyone to buy directly from google store.

6 Oct 17 #49
Exactly my thoughts! Also heated, as the OP has taken the time and effort to research the cheapest ways to own the phone, so this post deserves prominence for anyone who is about to rush out and buy one.

None the less the price is way in excess of what I consider reasonable. You can get last year's pixel for £400 now (Deal Link) which is still pretty high in my books, but maybe a price worth paying for a phone that's kept up to date by google. If you're not bothered about google updates, or you can put lineageOS on a phone I'd probably look elsewhere. OnePlus5 maybe?

There's a better deal with at least 5GB data at mobiles.co.uk (hopefully that works)

£896.76 total cost with 10OFF taking £10 off the upfront cost and quidco offering £35 back at present on new EE contracts (which this is)

Just cancelled that though to go for £888 (before vouchers and cashback) on the 128GB version, only 3GB data but that's usable.

Worth noting - and apologies if it already has been - that EE are seemingly the 'exclusive launch partners' and as such are operating in a monopoly at the moment. If you can hold out until Google expand to other carriers, the competition is likely to throw up some much better deals. I can't find details on how long EE will remain exclusive, but I'm personally gonna wait.

I would really recommend buying directly from the Google Store. You get a free Google Home Mini (£49) and more importantly you get much better support. I've just gone through and updated (should appear shortly, with any luck) - the XL deals are all coming from EE direct now as noone else seems to offer it. The Mobiles.co.uk deals for the Pixel 2 are competitive on the 24 months basis with at least 5GB of data.
