Better gettign the MSI with same specs, space for a 2.5 drive and two M2 slots

Unless you absolutely need the portability of a laptop: just get a gaming desktop-much more power for your money.
With a gaming laptop you still need somewhere to put your mouse/power cable/headphones (on a desk presumably) anyway whilst using it, so your "portable" laptop is basically the same footprint as a desktop anyway.

I think anyone looking specifically for a gaming laptop would be well aware of gaming desktops and their limitations.

Can any one advise me if this is a good price and good system, would be my first gaming laptop.

Good laptop; bad price. At that price point, I'd expect a gtx 1060 GPU

1399 for the 1060
That's a 1060 but i5 not i7

I'd take a quad core i5 over an i7 in a gaming laptop unless money was not a limitation.

There's a lot of positive feedback on the Medion range of gaming laptops. Better specs, and value for money. I'd probably get one myself if I was looking:
Can this handle decent video editing? I'm not too fussed about gaming. How important is the lack of ssd?

The lack of ssd means that booting up the system would be slower and loading up software. Good cpu and decent GPU, would be fine with video editing

see benchmarks for laptop GTX1050 -- if that's enough performance for your gaming needs, go for it, otherwise buy something else as you can't upgrade the GPU in a laptop

Actually you often can now so long as the graphics card in the laptop is on an MXM module like the one in my laptop which is a gtx 660m. Im not 100% unsure of how the newer 10 series cards are put in because iv never opened one up but i have seen a gtx 1060 on an mxm module so i would imagine the gtx 1050 is the same but may differ for certain laptops.

Price of mxm often means it's cheaper to sell existing laptop and then just upgrade. It's a good idea, just economies of scale and lack of take up means it's expensive and limited.

Rubbish that would entirely depend on the specs of the laptop you are upgrading, i recently upgraded my clevo laptop with a gtx 660m to a gtx 970m. The price of a gtx 970m laptop is almost £1000, by upgrading the gpu it only cost me £268 (from the US) and the remaining specs of the laptop were equal to that of laptops already running a 970m. The only problem is finding a place to buy them, they are rare and as a result some places do over charge.

Wasn’t mxm largely abandoned some time ago?

No, in fact more manufacturers are switching to them. I believe msi started using them, the idea of upgrading a laptop when it becomes outdated is an attractive prospect. Many clevo laptops use them as well.

jonthed as fiqqer says not really a gaming machine, I have a similar MSI laptop here it is good, though I don't game with it.
If you wait for Black Friday, what do you use before then?
The similar MSI that I have is defiantly a cut above the cheaper laptops that I've had before. Investigate fitting your own SSD, it is usually cheaper

Spec wise it is very good at a good price. I'd hesitate to call it a gaming laptop, but it will have a good go as one. It looks like it can accommodate an additional flash drive so if you have a spare one - you can easily make it better for £100. The proper gaming version of this laptop is £899.

I'm going with this reply, its a laptop with a semi decent video card.
