Xiaomi only announced the A1 the other day and no official release date or global pricing yet. But since it's going to sell in "Europe", we might get competitive price and quicker delivery.

The A1's specs are mostly the same as the Note 4 though

Delivery times, even on free standard, is more like 10 days from the reputable Ali Express dealers; some of the less reputable ones dont actually have the phones in stock, so it can be 3 weeks before it even gets dispatched.

Photo quality isnt just down the the camera itself - which uses a decent set of hardware; but the SOFTWARE. I used to be reasonably happy with the photos on my elderly Note 3G, but the update from MIUI 5 to MIUI 6 completely screwed it up - everything was out of focus. It was MIUI 7 before they managed to fix it again.

i ended up using a 3rd party camera software suite to replace the MIUI 6 version, and that worked much better (and gave me 36fps burst photo speeds).

Even on the Global ROM, a few bits of Chinese get through, several times I have found some weird apps and games appear after an update, that only offer Chinese text, but they deleted easily enough.

Xiaomi is a reputable brand, never had a spyware issue and I have used mine for Amazon and for banking (and iZettle), without worrying.

I don't know what peoples gripes are with spyware. We have no privacy. Whether it's the cia, gchq, Russia or Chinese, we have no privacy.

Thinking of buying this for the OH but she has bad track record with looking after phones.

For the price, the phone is top value. Xiaomi are one of the top tech companies in the world. I've got the xiaomi yeelights, fitness band. Cheap but quality products.

So you'd be fine with broadcasting your entire life because you have no privacy anyway? There are clearly different lengths you can take to protect your privacy and there are safeguards against invading privacy. Issues against government surveillance are understandable, but things could get worse and as I said, there's different levels of trust you must place. Firstly you're trusting google with your data, you're also trusting the government, then the third piece is that you're trusting the Chinese (not that I'm trying to say that Xiaomi is untrustworthy). It's understandable to be concerned with how many people you put your trust in. I mean you'd be a fool to put trust in a dodgy knock off because "you have no privacy anyway".

What do you mean by 'dodgy knock off'?

North Korea must have intercepted the nuclear ICBM plans I mistakenly sent on WhatsApp rather than the sticky toffee recipe I meant to send - oops.
frish to Infiltrator
7 Sep 17 #74
I wasn't referring to Xiaomi from that comment for the record. Phones can be the most personal device we have and not just stuff people use to look up recipes. It's not something that should be taken lightly.

The problem is not with banking apps, where you cannot lose much (banks will give you your money back usually) but what about cryptocurrency? If you get hacked in any shake or form, your money will be gone, with no possibility of getting it back.
No authority to report too either.

Use the slower free postage or increase risk of charges. Never had charges on the free delivery. As long as you get lineage OS on it, you won't need a new phone for a good few years. MIUI is awful so it's best avoided.

androidfilehost.com/?fi…524

That's the APK for the camera port.

As for it only being as good as the hardware, sadly that's never the case even with high end phones. The software makes a camera awesome 9 times out of 10. Just look at Sony as a prime example. They make the best camera hardware for smartphones, yet they have no idea how to make software that'll allow their own phones to compete with the top tier.

The ported Google camera makes a huge difference because of how well HDR+ works. Plus it works like a pixel, no lag at all, instant pictures. All the processing done in the background.

There seems to be a lot of comments on recent Banggood phone threads in which buyers state they got hit with customs fees. Let us know if you happen to be the same. The common factors seems to be that Swiss Post is mentioned and a card from Royal Mail for £11.42 charge (due to Banggood declaring it at a lower value). I wonder if it's the same for everyone who has ordered from them recently.

Yeah, the recent Gearbest and AliExpress deals haven't had people mentioning any charges so it's specific to Banggood. Tracking said the exact same thing for me 2 days ago & I then received a card delivered today notifying me there's a customs charge of £11.42 which needs to be paid before I can collect or arrange delivery of the phone. Pretty much everyone has had the exact same thing happen unfortunately so you should expect a 'Unfortunately we can't deliver your item because there is a fee to pay' card to arrive in the next day or two (after the weekend obviously). You might be somehow luckier than others on here but everyone in the last day or two seems to have reported having been charged.

Can you go to the post office to pay & collect the phone straight away?
bernardsfingers
1 Oct 17 #146
I think so but you need to take the card with you & you need to pay cash to pick it up as they don't accept cards apparently.
Burgmeister
1 Oct 17 #147
Must depend on the individual PO as I paid by card in mine. Be aware that you also need to take ID (Passport or Driving License are accepted).
bernardsfingers
1 Oct 17 #148
I'm only going by the wording on the card which says 'if you are planning to pay an outstanding fee on collection, credit /debit cards cannot be processed at delivery offices'. I guess if it's being held at a post office then you should be ok tho.

Fair enough. Our parcel collection office had a contactless card machine. I took cash just in case but ended up paying by debit card.

£11.42 charge here as well..oh well, still seems like a deal !!

Can anyone recommend a decent screen protector and case?

And also is it best to leave as is or root ? Any advice appreciated.

No recommendations but if you're looking for cases and screen protectors, be careful of the housing differences otherwise you might buy ones that won't fit. More info here: hotukdeals.com/com…899

Have had a card saying that there's £18.03 to pay!! Don't know why it's so different to everyone else's!
dreadzone101
2 Oct 17 #153
Whenever you get it, check what is written as the value on the customs label. That charge would suggest yours was declared at around £50 ($66) whereas everyone else's seems to have been declared at $22.
plymouthgal
2 Oct 17 #154
They put that it was an mp4 player with a value of $62.56 unfortunately
dreadzone101
2 Oct 17 #155
Other were marked as mp4 player too but valued at $22, so their 20% VAT was around £3.30 whereas yours would have been £10, and then the £8 handling fee which doesn't vary. Strange that they put yours as 3x the value of everyone else's though.

Is there any reference to banggood on it i didn't have to pay customs on a Mi6 i bought about 3months ago Now on the top of mine where it says from it has THIS FASHION printed in it then where it says if undeliverable please return to it says ASENDIA HKG 0000921 so there don't appear to be any reference to banggood so i wonder if that could be the difference has yours got the same or different

Same here, I've been charged £11.42 custom fee

Mine was marked as gift.
dreadzone101
2 Oct 17 #160
I thought that might have been the difference for people not getting charged but someone else who had theirs valued at $22 and marked as a gift still got charged, even though gifts below £39 apparently won't have VAT applied:

Mine is the same, no reference to Banggood at all. It was also marked as a gift.

Ah well, stumped up the £11.42 and had a brief look at the phone. Looks decent

Ok, so I know that people discussed this before but I am not really experienced with this: How exactly do you upgrade the camera (or software for the camera)? Cheers in advance

Hi,
Question of the day. My old Wileyfox used to kick into wifi mode whenever it found my home or work network. But my new Note 4 seems to stay on my 4g data signal even though the Wifi is on and in reach. I have to click a manual connect in Wifi settings. Is there a way to make it connect to Wifi networks automatically when they are in reach?
Thanks in advance.
