I thought Xiaomi were s'posed to be cheap Chinese phones showing up the likes of Samsung and Apple...seems the price is creeping up to join them :disappointed:

To be fair, a lot of these price increases aren't anything to do with the companies themselves.
The pound is in the toilet. Exchange rate has been pap since... well... you know.

Yes, I know. Exchange rate has been terrible since the financial crisis ten years ago.

We've literally just crept back to the lowest point we hit in 2008.
I was getting 1.55 to 1.6 dollars to the pound right up until Wrexit.

You may as well have said Black Wednesday. The pound had greatly strengthened against most major currencies (except USD) by the Brexit vote.
dz1 to friar_chris

I know it suits some people to blame brexit for expensive phones but it's just fake news, because the relevant currency here is the Chinese yuan. Most of the Pound's weakness against the yuan is down to the financial crisis of ten years ago. Brexit, not so much.
totalrecall1 to dz1

Sorry to burst your bubble but the yuan is pegged to the USD and Chinese products usually sold in USD, just like petrol. GBP crashed after the vote result. The impact will show when hedges run out and sellers can't absorb the cost anymore.

You are paying for the quality of the product. That can't be done at a fraction of the price.
They are cheaper and high quality just not "very cheap"

Xiaomi used to be better value. A few years ago they were doing well but recently their share of the market in China has dropped significantly. They have definitely become more expensive lately but quality has stayed about they same.
This is a nice phone but not that much better than the £180 bezel-less elephone S8 and that one has a beautiful quad HD display and a much bigger battery.

The Mi Mix was a cut above anything else i've seen by Xiaomi in terms of quality and spec. Its a real flagship phone for them rather than a cheap clone of something else that was mid range to begin with.
I suspect the Mi Mix 2 is of the same vein - premium products mean premium costs too. Not helped of course by a weak pound
Its like Hyundai and KIA. Cheap as chips cars when its an average car with an average build quality. Once they started building good cars to a good quality then suddenly their prices are much closer to the class leaders.

I've a Mi Mix and wouldnt upgrade to this personally. The Mi Mix has a ceramic shell which is a work of art frankly, and the 6.4 inch screen is amazing.
To me, a Mi Mix @ £380 is the better phone. I love mine. First Xiaomi i've had, having previously ran Samsungs
The nearest in size / capability to a Mi Mix is a Note 8 at twice the price.

In terms of tax and duty. I do believe that if you use non priority mail, you will be unlucky if you are charged. However, you need to be prepared for the eventuality. If you are still happy to buy from China with £100 of extra cost, go for it. With black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, I would expect some of the flagship phone prices in the UK to be around £500 and so is this really such a good deal?

If this is stopped by customs (likely these days tbh) then:
VAT = £87
And the delivery company will also charge a fee for clearing this on top (be between £8-£13 usually).
So price is realistically £535.87.
Still cheap for the specs. But then no (realistic) warranty and no idea of build quality etc...

Unlikely, in my experience and the experience of lots of others. According to the gov.uk website, it would be nowhere near your estimate.
I don't get how you think that government link says it will be less. The link says VAT and Duty will be payable. VAT is 20%.
badboyofrock to Lowtrawler
19 Sep 17#10
Again, from experience. The only time I've been charged was for a tablet that was approx £175. 2.5% plus the fee that you correctly state DHL will charge, is roughly equal to the £16 fee I incurred.
4Real2016 to badboyofrock
19 Sep 17#15
You got lucky, 2.5% is the charge for gifts over £135, the limit for goods over £135 is set by the type of goods being imported.
The total value of everything including import duty is added together and then charged VAT.
badboyofrock to 4Real2016
19 Sep 17#16
I guess I was lucky then. I recall the value being correct, but it could have been marked as a gift. It's a while ago to be honest.

Yep. Sounds like he's bang out of date or just got lucky.
This past couple of years absolutely everything I've imported from outside the EU has had 20% VAT applied. And that's a lot of stuff!
Looking forward to (eventually) paying VAT on goods imported from the EU soon and all!

Out of interest credit cards give more protection if any issues that I understand but wondered if pay via credit card via PayPal is that weakening my legal rights?
pgilc1 to alexus
19 Sep 17#43
It does weaken your legal rights, yes.
Pay with credit card if you can. Paypal will assist if there are issues but they arent liable per se. Also, if you do have to ship it back, google the guides on how to do it safely and with least risk and cost (and trackable)
4Real2016 to alexus
19 Sep 17#47
I don't use paypal for anything over £100, they do have their own protection but that's exactly what it is, once they say no its game over. With a credit card your basically getting another warranty backed by law, you don't even need to deal with the retailer, although its best practice to do so. If your section 75 claim gets denied by the credit card company you can pass it on to the financial ombudsman and they will make the decision.
Neilscoutb to alexus
19 Sep 17#54
Yep it weakens it as your contract is with PayPal not the seller
FREEZIN_WOLF to Neilscoutb
20 Sep 17#55
The question was, does using PayPal weaken the position of the consumer in comparison to using the protection that you get using a credit card.
Having an easily accessible credit card company effectively warrantying your goods is arguably much BETTER than dealing with the seller. But the question was about how comprehensive PayPals intervention is.

Assuming its not been dropped and its an actual fault then if you bought it with a credit card, then your credit card company provide the warranty, if you bought via Paypal you will have some assistance from them but ultimately you arrange to return it to china, they repair or replace, and they send it back.
There are many guides online on how to do this safely and effectively, and trackable.
Its not risk free and its a lot more hassle than just returning it to your o2 shop or wherever locally.

No UK warranty but it still has a warranty. Also if you pay by credit card your credit card company become liable for the UK warranty.
Also most phones get dropped rather than go faulty themselves and no UK warranty covers that anyway.
