badboyofrock to GGMI
11 Sep 17 #12
You don't need to buy windows again. You can reinstall windows in English as long as it isn't a multi language version. It has to be a single language version. I've done it twice this year, albeit not on this laptop. You can easily find instructions online
Picard123 to badboyofrock
11 Sep 17 #18
You need another licence key as the licence key supplied is for Windows 10 Chinese (single language) version ONLY.
badboyofrock to Picard123
11 Sep 17 #24
The licence is for single language but the language isn't specified. Download the single licence edition but choose English instead of Chinese. That's what I did. Twice.
Picard123 to badboyofrock
11 Sep 17 #25
Can't be done. The licence is specifically for the Chinese single language version and stored in the BIOS. If you have a version of Windows that allows you to select between English and Chinese, its not a single language version. I've also never seen a single language English only version of Windows 10 (not that it matters).

You'll need to buy a Windows English license. It ONLY comes with Chinese.

Yes, Windows comes in many languages but this only comes in Chinese, no other languages.
You can download windows from the link below, but you will need to buy the license to activate.

Another thing against this laptop is battery. If you need to chsnge battey then you're ****** as hard to source online and not easy to replace. Considering the battery apparently drops very quickly that is a worry for me.

gizmo2501 to Chauxffeur
11 Sep 17 #33
Don't suppose you have a link for that £5 licence, do you? I had a legitimate W7 licence that I upgraded to W10 for free when they did it a couple of years back, and now it says it's not activated and can't be activated - something to do with KMS, when it wasn't even an enterprise key. I don't want to buy another key when Microsoft have somehow ruined my key and activation through no fault of my own.

This is slightly cheaper than the same laptop on banggood, they have it for £525.88 at the moment, but seems to change with the exchange rates.

If I was buying I might lean towards banggood because I've had 100% reliability with them, but for an item of this value I would avoid, because of customs and warranty.

Got one of these and I love it. One of the key issues for me was that any trackpad vs my Macs was always rubbish. The windows 10 latest update has made this a precision trackpad. Whilst it isn't perfect it as close to mac as going to get now. I love the dedicated GPU and USB C. For those wanting to know it is fully Ubuntu compatible too. I dual boot. The only slight let down is that the battery only lasts about 4 and a half to five hours. I do use it in high performance mode though so you can probably get more (has quick charge too). The reason this version is cheaper is they have released a newer version with fingerprint and MX150. I am not sure it is worth the extra to be honest.

Used software license keys can be resold under EU law.

These keys are likely from old machines that are now dead.
andysubaru
12 Sep 17 #47
I bought 2 last year. One I sent via DHL because I wanted it fast and paid about £15 in duty, the other I sent by the standard air mail method or whatever they call it (think I paid an extra £1 for tracking too) and it arrived a few days after the DHL one but with nothing to pay. Apparently shipping via DHL you almost always pay duty (gearbest even messaged me to warn me of this to see if I wanted to switch to standard but I needed it in a rush so stuck with DHL)
andysubaru
12 Sep 17 #48
Also worth noting these are (reasonably) easy to dual boot Mac OSX and windows. I installed a second M2 SSD in the secondary slot and it runs great, only thing that doesn't work in osx is the built in wifi so I have to plug in a usb dongle.
I run mainstage and logic with no speed issues

No worries, yeah I'd just go with the standard tracked one, it wasn't much slower and saves you £15
badboyofrock
12 Sep 17 #51
*sigh* Yes, I know all that. But windows 10 machines no longer come with a COA, and the license key you can reveal using a key finder is only a generic one that is the same as all the others. The actual key is stored in Bios and is un readable. These keys are from a key gen program, and the sellers of these keys are taking advantage of the way that windows machines from windows 8 validate their own activation status, as there is room for a little, shall we say, leeway. Installations of office are the same. If you are a PC builder, as I infer from your profile, you should know all this.
ollie87
12 Sep 17 #52
I do, but a lot of prebuilt machines come with their Windows license sticker. So when that machine is dead the license can live on.

Indeed, but not, as I said, windows 10.

Mmm, however Microsoft seems to still accepting Windows 7/8/8.1 keys for Windows 10. I've done it very recently so I know it works.
badboyofrock
12 Sep 17 #55
I know this, as well. But, if you read the small print, it requires a genuine key. In this case, the serial from the bottom of a windows 7 laptop would fine, although, you couldn't use windows 7 elsewhere using the same key. That would be 2 installations and would be a violation of the terms.
ollie87
12 Sep 17 #56
Correct, however if the old machine is dead and about to be thrown in the bin this is fine.

Thanks for that. Have you had any problems with yours since activating?
gizmo2501
12 Sep 17 #63
Seems you know a fair bit about these sort of things, I wondered if you could help (sorry to hijack the thread!).

I was interested in an EBay key because my 100% legitimate W10 activation deactivated itself and refuses to activate. I upgraded from W8 --> W10 on their free basis a couple of years ago, all worked fine until about 4 months ago when it just started saying it wasn't activated. Said there was a problem with the KMS. Only problem is, I never had W8 Enterprise, so no KMS. I had W8 Pro and when I upgraded to Windows 10, it did indeed upgrade to Pro.

However, it seems, somehow, I now am on W10 Enterprise, and, thus, my key does not work. I never installed W10 Enterprise. I did, however, have a faulty motherboard and had to get it swapped for another brand, and a MS assistant online gave me a key to use. I wonder if they gave me an Enterprise key, and now it won't work, and they refuse (I guess understandably), to give me a new key. Any tips on what I should do? I can't find my old W10 CD for the licence.

Or should I just buy a £2 from EBay? I'm a bit worried that it's illegal and MS will bash down my door :-P .

KMS is key management server, and is used to check that your copy of Windows is genuine. I would guess that your problem is that you have an enterprise edition key, but are running a pro edition of Windows (if I understand correctly). Is it possible that you could restore your computer to factory, ie windows 8, and then upgrade to Windows 10 again? The keys for sale on eBay and places like that are fake keys, and are illegal, but may well work. How long for though, is anyone's guess.

There is "priority line" = £0, "expedited shipping" =£9

and shipping insurance = £11

I'm a bit confused tbh. Can I do priority and shipping insurance or would that be at risk of charges? Or is it only expedited where you get charged?
andysubaru
12 Sep 17 #70
I think its the expedited that increases your chances of duty as it goes via DHL. Pretty sure my second one I ordered I insured it but didn't expedite and it was fine. Wouldn't want to risk not insuring it especially after the other chaps comment about it being nicked in transit and receiving an empty box
thekanester
12 Sep 17 #71
We have this come up every time. It is not illegal, but may be counter to the windows EULA. MS permits license transfers to other motherboards should your PC break. The reputable eBay PC resellers are within their rights to sell these with the original broken motherboard. However, it is generally a gentleman's agreement that the bust mobile is never sent.

It's a very grey area but from good vendors the license has been paid for and is completely legit - just make sure you get it from a reseller and not someone with a dodgy keygen program that will invalidate after a month.

I do this for all of my home builds and have never had a problem.
thekanester
12 Sep 17 #72
Once I bought my license from someone who wasn't a reseller and the license failed. Check through their history to be confident that they are and you should be ok. eBay will refund if you have any issues with a month.

I have bought a handful from reputable sellers that have been active for years with no issue.
badboyofrock
12 Sep 17 #73
And how, physically, are the keys obtained?

Either with the COA from the front of the machine or by recovering the key from the HDD using a tool purpose built for that (can't remember the name offhand)

I am a very, very thorough person and have weighed up the positives and negatives with this laptop. The negatives being from China, poor battery life, gets hot easily, non removable battery, US keyboard etc, reflective screen etc. However you won't get a better, nicer looking laptop for the money.

Would be nice if you can keep me updated when you get it? Also any problems you run into etc? I assume you will be downloading English windows 10? Hope you are happy with it

I ordered the i5-7200U 2017 version, was an extra £100, I think I read it doesn't have the heat problem and also the 2gb NVIDIA GeForce MX150

Hey, mine is still sitting on the very same status... so I will just sit tight for another week and if nothing changes will email them again.

Anything at your end ?

Nope. My android box I ordered last Monday is still saying shipped out but Yodel haven't received it yet and my laptop I ordered last Thursday and it's still saying "processing"!

I've ordered 2016 version on the 13th September. Order status was "processing" for more than 10days so I contacted them via ticket and got a reply it's not in stock. (Product page saying number of items left mean only how many left on promotional price - not that they have any stock). For stock you have to contact presale team. They have replied they are getting stock around 30th September and gave me option to cancel or swap for another item. I have cancelled and ordered 2017 version which I have enquired about stock and they said it is so i made a new order on 26th. My original order has been refunded within 2 days via PayPal and new order shipped today with Yodel tracking number. Hopefully won't be too long before it gets here...
