Just ordered for £6.38. Code worked once registered with Tomtop and verified email. This will be an upgrade on an inferior dashcam in the family car as I already have this type in my 2nd car and it's very good! My only gripes are the buttons vibrate (easily solved with cellotape across the buttons) and the cam occasionally falls off the clamp (again, easily solved with a little tape or glue).

Is it obscure? I added the deal and how it works is that some people (not me personally) get coupon codes from the sellers so they can interest people in their website hoping they will return for more. Its the same way aliexpress banggood gearbest and other chinese sites started. Simple. Also you can pay with paypal if you dont want them to have your info

All depends on the quality of its recording. Say it records at 10Mbps, then it'll record around 50mins on a 4Gb card.

Larger the Mbps value (or better the recording quality) = lower the recording time, & vice-versa.

I'm sorry to say that is FAR from true - I made note the first time I used my clarity card (about a month ago)... $1.30, Paypal offer £1.05, but clarity came in at £1.01. Now admittedly there could have been a change in exchange rate, but that is near 4%.

18 Sep 17 #73
Sorry, I dont mean this in the wrong way.

If you want something that could potentially help you in a crash surely you want something better than this.

I've tried these cheap ones and they either fail or dont loop record correctly and end up not recording at all which defeats the purpose.

Dont get me wrong, this is a great price but for peace of mind get something better.

I purchased a very similar one from amazon and ended up sending it back the same day, I've tried an apeman cam and a nextbase one, they are both great makes and the quality is so much better, granted they are more expensive, I would rather have something that works though.

I'd recommend spending a few pounds more and getting a branded (and genuine) memory card at least. It's ok to get a very cheap dash cam but it would be disappointing to have an accident and then find out your memory card silently failed three weeks ago and there is nothing on it.

You don't need a large card at all - 8GB is fine because you only need to keep a few minutes recorded.

How can you use this for 24 hour parking monitoring or motion based detection ?
Askrulous
18 Sep 17 #82
As others have said, if you want something reliable, I wouldn't bother with one of these.

Here's a scenario. You have a dash cam for a few weeks, watching it closely and checking out footage of idiot drivers etc. Then after a few months you take it for granted, assuming each near miss would have been caught on cam. Then you have an accident and check the footage for said smash, only to find the camera hasn't been working (in spite of looking like it was) and hasn't even recorded the incident. This was my experience, luckily it only cost me a wing mirror (and tenner for the cam), before realising the error of my ways.

You might be lucky, and your cam is never faulty, but even the one in the you tube review kindly posted above by baltazar had a fault were it missed out seconds of driving footage - and that was brand new!
jinkssick
18 Sep 17 #83
You will need to provide it with a power source (as it works off the car power when its running). A 20000 power bank would be more than enough to record hours if not days. As for motion detecting you will need to get a better camera for that as I do not know if this has it.

Use a £30 at the front and hoping this is adequate for rear.

OK I'm something of a thicko...but it took me a LOT of time to get my 3 cameras ordered with discount.
I finally had success once I REGISTERED on TOMTOP! I chose 'ADD TO BASKET' and then 'View Cart and Check out. THEN you'll see 'Check out using PAYPAL' on the right hand side and you'll see the line (two above the PAYPAL bit) saying '+ Have a Promotion Code?'
Click on that and enter the code HPDVR6

This works BUT, as someone else said you only get the brilliant price £6-38, or so, if you log in and order ONE at a time.
Someone linked a good video too, showing how good these cameras are.
I'm mounting one on the front window, one in the back window and one on each side windows....you're right, I already have one...different model!
Seriously though, I've bought these for Xmas presents.....cheapskate!!!

I sympathise with you however I'll always give a company one chance to redeem themselves then that's it.
I currently deal with at least 10 large chinese based companies. I place orders weekly and there are occasional issues such as out of stock, quality control and DOA problems. It's how efficiently they deal with the issues depends on whether I continue to use them. Companies that have live chat, 24hrs response time and good customer relations are always a bonus.
I currently have a few favourites that fulfil these requirements.

Looking forward to your reply and hope your kindly understanding.

There's no set date mentioned anywhere in PayPal (PP) T&Cs or FAQs regarding this.

If you cannot wait indefinitely, I'd give them 7-14 days to ship before contacting PayPal to step in & refund you.

This is from the PP US site (but probably as a guideline only): How long does the seller have to ship my item?

Unfortunately the specification has been altered and the pictures removed since these orders were placed. I think an inferior item is being substituted.

e.g. HDMI output has been removed from the original description and the wide angle lens is gone.

The pictures are back up now, but they are different from what I remember. Previously they were the same as the GT300 with HDMI socket (also then specified in the text - but now missing) . The buttons are now different also.

My order was originally cancelled and then replaced, without telling me. I think they may have re-ordered a cheaper inferior substitute. Whether we get what was described when we ordered or what is offered now is unclear - but the fiddling around with my order suggests we are not getting the original.
Redbu11
28 Sep 17 #171
They are not cancelling my order despite me asking several times. I keep getting the same emails back!

32112955-DHi79.jpg
They have also done to me what they've done to others and changed the order to an inferior model!
cami
28 Sep 17 #172
They did a similar thing with a fidget spinner that I ordered from them.
I ordered one with different coloured bearing but when I received it the bearings were all black.
When I checked the picture of what I had ordered they had changed the original picture from the coloured to the black ones. When I asked them about it they said they can't see the problem as what I received, going by the reference number, is the same as their picture.
So I think they will send out an inferior model.
paul99
28 Sep 17 #173
What appears to be the same thing at a similar price is on sale at Gearbest, butt when you look more closely you can see they are actually now quite different (though originally they were the same).

I had a feeling these wouldn't been 170 degrees anyway going from other reviews of identical cameras. Still though rather cheeky of them to do this but if you've paid by PayPal you shouldn't have any issues when it comes to forcing a refund. First and last time I'll be using TomTop.

How did you get Paypal to refund so quickly? When I log in it only gives me the option to resolve with the seller through Paypal. Not deal with Paypal directly.
steviedee
29 Sep 17 #182
Yes, that's fine. Do the make contact with the seller option and select request refund and include a message. Also go via the resolution centre on PayPal which from memory is two separate areas. Either way, making contact via e mail to request money back was how I got it. Paypal message saying seller had issued refund.
martinisok
29 Sep 17 #183
I selected resolution, now I have to wait till 19th October for seller to respond.
petervilla
29 Sep 17 #184
Are you sure that 19/Oct is not the last date you can escalate? I have done the same as you and PayPal state:

The deadline to either mark this case as resolved or escalate it for our attention is 19 October 2017. You must mark the case as resolved if you reach an agreement with the seller or escalate the case to a claim if you cannot resolve it. If you take no action by 19 October 2017, this case will close automatically. Once a case has been closed, it cannot be reopened or escalated to a PayPal claim.

So I will escalate in a couple of days presuming I do not receive the item in that time.

Decided to go to paypal given some of the posts, been a member for years and years and never had to open a complaint.
Got an email pretty much straight away from TomTop. Like others, they seem to respond when paypal is involved.
I got the standard issue answer too apologising for the delay and....
"we will ship the item out within 3 days"
...asking me twice to close the case.
Yeah right.
martinisok
30 Sep 17 #187
Dear customer,
I am really sorry for that.
When we are going to ship the item found that you have opened a dispute.
If you would like wait for the item please close the dispute.
We will process your order within 1-2 days.
if you would not like to wait, we would refund you.

So this is just a scam?

Mine has today been marked as despatched (but 140 degrees rather than 170 degrees) - bit of a poor show waiting 2 weeks until sending an item. I buy a lot from Aliexpress sellers / Banggood / Buyincoins and haven't had this issue with any of them.

they've changed the item in our order history to an inferior camera, without asking or giving us the option to cancel instead

they have taken 2 weeks to ship out this inferior model camera, it was always going to be kinda crap for the price but now it'll be even worse

personally I'm opening a PayPal dispute anyway before it arrives (doubt it ever will)

scam is the perfect word to describe this, first and last time using tomtop and I'll be directing people to this thread in future tomtop deals

I ordered two of these on the 20th and the 21st of sept. in the original e-mail from paypal it says its a 140 angle lens, not 170 as some claim.. Not sure what the original ad was at first..
Anyway, after a good week 7-8 days I sent them an email asking why it still was being processed, and the next day I got this e-mail.

Dear customer, Thank you for your order. Sorry to tell you that, but there was something wrong with the product in transit before, so the supplier send us another batch of products. Would you like to wait for some days? Our product will arrive at the warehouse within 10 business days. We will arrange the shipment as soon as it arrives. And sorry again for this inconvenience.

This gets worse.

I also paid by paypal where it correctly shows the GT300 spec of "2.4 Inch 1080P 170 Degree " that was ordered. However checking my order record on Toptop I can see that the order detail I screen-printed at the time ( 2.4 Inch 1080P 170 Degree Wide Angle) has now been changed to match the current inferior version that they are advertising.

I.e. they have revisited and changed the order description to a different item after the payment.

I ordered two of these 170 models, got sent two 140 ones which arrived today. From my very basic test of pointing it at a ruler and measuring distances with some trig, it looks like the actual viewable angle is more like 37 degrees. Obviously terrible and completely useless as a dash cam. Maybe I'm missing something in the settings but I've been through all the menus and there's no setting I can see to widen the view. Very disappointed.

Well they changed the description from 170 to 140 degrees but added this line underneath

"High Resolution Definition Video Car Vehicle with 32GB TF Card Digital Camcorder"

So it looks like your going to get 32GB card with any 140 camera's if you don't then moan at them!

None came with mine! Oh well. Seems to sort of basically work except the very narrow FOV means you don't get a very good view recorded, plus the screen seems to stay on all the time rather than doing auto-off no matter what you set in the menu, which is a bit distracting. I'll have to stick a bit of card over it or something.

I held this camera next to a M10+, and the FOV is a joke  The M10+ has a fish eye view and is actually 170 degrees, whereas this cam is more like 45 degrees, and it seems to zoom in by default, which makes things worse. Cheap enough to leave in the car, but probably useless unless the other party hits my car head on.

From memory, dash cam screens need to go blank, otherwise you can be accused of watching the screen whilst driving, which is an offense. Mine doesnt work properly and the image is crap
bmadgett
7 Oct 17 #231
Good point. Was thinking of taping a piece of black card over the screen but not sure how well that'd stand up in court!

I rescued the poor FOV situation slightly by supergluing an old unused tiny fishangle lens (from one of those "phone lens kits") to the front of the camera. Gives it a more decent FOV.
