Which you would still have to pay for data usage for live traffic. This includes that for the lifetime of the unit

Not true. I picked up 4 or 5 of 3's free data reward sims last year and each comes with 200mb of free data each month. The offer is still live, with threads on here. I think most people would be better off using their phone - the people without a smart phone are most likely the people who would use a map anyway. The free navigation apps are getting better and better or then there's the paid services if bells and whistles are needed.

Data usage is minimal for live traffic. Really minimal.

Maybe because one does not like the battery drained on a phone while you do this. Or no lane guidance which you do not get on your mobile? Or no multipoint navigation or not being able to avoid certain stretches of route.

Not true. You've got all the mentioned options in the Tomtom Go App

Battery drain is minimum these days. Android and IOS are so much better than the bad ol' days.
Lane guidance is on Google Maps Multipoint navigation is available on Google Maps Avoiding certain stretches of road, just set Google maps to avoid Motorways, ferrys, etc. Or just turn off the road you wish to avoid.
Seriously, you should try Google maps.

Dedicated satnavs are better. I have the tomtom app on my phone and a tomtom. I prefer the tomtom.

I'm looking at buying a sat nav rather than use my mobile since the change in law regarding not touching your phone even when using as a sat nav, I was happily using Google maps and waze to navigate the world. But I'm thinking of rather upgrade my music player to one with integrated sat nav.

tried that great until you lose signal touch your sat nav you might get away with it but touch your phone ?

Never buy a tomtom product. I followed their instructions to the letter on a recommended update and it killed my satnav - they refused to repair so I will do what i promised them I would do and warn people at every opportunity.

The same happened with me & now I ll do the same! I followed their instruction to update & my satnav stopped responding. They refused to repair & asking exorbitant price for repair.

You are right ....updates wreck it. I now just leave it in the car as my last 2 were inoperable after updates...shame as they were great and their engineers can't help and blame firewalls and antivirus, which may be right. I would buy buy as a great price ,but avoid updates

Thanks was ready to buy it literally, but won't do now, I thought with an older unit they would have sorted the bugs out but thats poor poor service and they definitely know its a problem and don't want to pay to fix it. Its cost them a sale from me!

Just saw this link and as my geriatric Start 25 could do with replacing I've just looked for reviews of this model - GULP - Too many negative reviews for it, you expect a few negative reviews but there's hundreds of dissatisfied customers for the 5100 .... Will give this one a miss!

I've had this model for few months last year but it had to go because of slow start from cold, it takes over a minute to fully load. Now I use LG G2 with Tom Tom app and 3 SIM loaded , attached to a magnetic mount and works well, only need to find matte screen protector and that will be it..

Has Waze now improved, last time I used that when I had no phone signal the satnav did not work. I assume that it now works without a phone signal

What advantage does Waze have over Google Maps? After all, when Google bought them out they started integrating the data from Waze (such as traffic and accidents) into Maps

I think it's fair to say some people like using the phone, others would prefer a dedicated sat nav. Neither opinion is wrong. Just because one option works better for one person, doesn't mean it works for everyone. My great uncle for instance is much happier with a dedicated sat nav because he knows how to use it. There is no point confusing him by adding it to his phone, which he uses solely as a phone.
I have no real preference personally, as I use Google maps on my phone, but also have a sat nav in the car, so can choose what's best for me at the time. We are all free to make our own choices.....

Interesting comments. Have to say I have a TomTom 6 inch version of this with the traffic updates and its been one of my best purchases ever. Got fed up of using Waze on my phone ( massive battery drain too) and the hassle of putting it in the cradle etc every time.
Sat navs are so cheap now too that I leave mine permanently attached - no hassle of taking it off the window each time. Just get in and go.

I got my niece a "basic" TomTom Start 25 (UK/Ireland Maps) and she absolutely loves it. Bit concerning about the updates killing the sat-nav though - these things update so regularly - once a week or more from what I can remember (I'm usually tasked with updating it for her as she's too busy/or can't be bothered).
As she's a typical teenager she likes to have her iphone free (and she tends to music via Bluetooth anyway), and of course there's the problems with phone battery drain.

Although my cars got inbuilt satnav, its just not up to my Tomtoms standards - the 'Go 600' with lifetime map updates, which I rely on for longer journeys. Ive tried many different types of satnav over the years, but keep coming back to tomtom
BTW - Just updated the tomtom maps last week - a faultless procedure & nothing went wrong! To update my cars mapping would cost £169!!
About 5 years ago I had a tomtom which had 1 years of data free with it - it was brilliant - at least for the 1st year, so this version with unlimted data seems an amazing deal. Ive tried coupling my phone up with the Go 600 for the 'real time' traffic updates but its such a faff to do as well as quickly draining the phones battery
I also tried just using tomtom on the phone for a while which was fine if walking with it, but when driving its just so much easier if all the road info is presented on a bigger screen. ....well it is with my eyesight anyways
.... and I didnt realise you could use Google Maps to navigate with - that would probably use up all my monthly data across 1 journey

Maps uses a miniscule amount of data. All I can say is, your data allowance must be so small, it's hardly worth having any at all!

As I said, I didnt realise that you could use google maps as a navigation tool, but whenever Ive used streetview (different thing I know) that seems to swallow up my data allowance - 1Gb month (I usually get a data warning after 3 weeks :joy: )

Streetview will swallow your data, cus it needs to dwnload photos all the time. Never use streetview while using maps as a satnav

I use HERE on holidays too although while in the UK, I just use the built in sat nav in my car and it works well. I don't think that with androids being available for so cheap spending money on this one is good use of money and won't advice people to spend on something I won't do myself so as dragons like to say...for this reason I am out. :unamused:

For the most part yes you can use your phone as a sat nav but the only sat nav app that includes speed cameras, speed limits etc is Waze but that has annoying intrusive ads now. Apple maps has the speed limit but not the cameras...
My TomTom is slow and a bit cumbersome to use but no sat nav app comes close really. I use Apple maps for short journeys, sat nav for longer ones.

My TomTom failed when updating and now it's unusable. And the best thing TomTom wiped their hands and refused to either repair or replace it. Never again will I buy a TomTom product I just use Google maps on my mobile now.
