I have on PS4 (non VR) when first released, got to world 6 and stopped playing. now that the switch is out, I want on the go. How is it on the smaller screen? Also is it worth paying 12 for the same game essentially? And drop in framerate

No drop in framerate. It's still 60.
Only thing putting me off is I hear many who play it end up with broken thumbs...don't much care about the broken thumb but damaging the joycon in the process...

I absolutely love rhythm games, but for the life of me can't get into this one.

If the idea of a dark and engaging rhythm game with super tight controls sounds intriguing then give it a go. The music is super dark and ominous, and the game has a pretty good difficulty curve, even if it does get very hard.
It's not like anything I've ever played, but if you enjoyed runner you will probably like this.

Great game with headphones on (even better in VR) - heat

VR on Switch? How is that possible?

It's not - sorry - slightly off-topic... I have the game on PSVR. I have played the game without VR though and I strongly recommend headphones.
