To anyone who is even considering buying one of these over a GTX1080, I've got a jar of magic beans I can sell you.

I've been plodding along with my R9-280 for what seems like years, waiting for the Vega, thinking that we were going to get 1080 beating performance at a lower price point. However, the price/power/wattage now has me looking for a decently priced 1080 thinking that i'll sell and upgrade to a Volta when they come out.

What puts me off about these cards is the 295W vs my current GTX 970 at 148W.
Although winter is coming, I could use it to heat my house.

It's also twice as fast. I'd still go for a GTX 1070 though.

Anybody getting a Vega should be undervolting and overclocking.
Lots of good results on Reddit over stock.

I upgraded to a Radeon Nano for a reasonable price just over a year ago, and I think that will do me for another couple of years until the performance upgrade is actually significant.

I posted the previous one, got cold very quick for some reason. I've got the card since and it works well on 25600x1600, balanced mode gives you power but if you need quiet you can just switch to power save mode and tadaa.

So, standalone means you dont need to plug it into a computer to make it work??

These have been available for some time, at this price. But that said, will probably go out of stock soon - so if you're interested, grab one now.
Personally I decided to wait for the custom cards, and it has been an agonising, soul searching ordeal that will continue until I can order one of the bloody things..... IF I can order one of the things. Whenever the get released.
Next time I'm going nvidia, guys. Ridiculous G-Sync prices be damned.

I'm in the same boat. What a wait for release and what a disappointment in performance and price. I nearly bought the £275 980ti deal last week. The only reason I didn't is my lovely 27" freesync monitor. I regret now because that was a great price.

To be honest mate, while it's not exactly exciting, I'm OK with the performance. It's basically met my needs for a 3440x1440 screen (just).
What's been really painful is the never ending delays. I bought my freesync screen before the R480 came out, expecting some new more powerful card to upgrade my R390.
Now we're what, 3 generations later, and only just seeing something significantly more powerful? With loads more delays and a mining inflated market? It's pretty depressing and had sucked a lot of the fun out of it for me.
More fool me really for buying in anticipation of something around the corner. The lesson is next time, buy for the tech available at the time.
If I was coming to market now for the first time, I think Vega 64 and a 3440x1440 freesync screen would still offer a compelling offer, perhaps even the sweet spot price/performance wise at that resolution, but the non stop delays have really pissed on my bonfire.
Oh well. First world problems & all that!

I'm still using my R9 290 along with my 2560x1440 freesync monitor which still does a decent job for many games. The 390, 480 and 580 were not good enough reasons to upgrade so I decided to wait it out for Vega. I'd happily upgrade to either the Vega 56 or 64 but the prices aren't as competitive as I'd hoped. Seriously contemplated grabbing a 1070/1080 when they were a bit cheaper a few months back but I resent having to pay more again for a gsync monitor.
I might just hold onto my 290 for another year instead :unamused:

im in need of an upgrade but be dammed if im filling the pockets of retailers who inflate prices because of mining craze. my little old sapphire 7950 will do untill the craziy prices subside, probally in 2030 :joy:

i been looking at mining, not to do, but to see what its all about, did read that hd7950 are getting around 20MH/s, no idea if thats good or bad mind. just want prices to return to normality sometime
plewis00 to aberboy007
12 Sep 17#13
That was a year ago, now they do about 10MH/s with massive power consumption so it's not worth it (even if it was once upon a time, they suffer massive slowdown as the DAG increases) - use it and keep it for gaming, it's more fun!

whats the best for mining then?

13 Sep 17#25
An RX 480 is currently the best AMD card for price, power consumption and speed or you can use Vega with some heavy tweaking. R9 290/390 is good if you don't care about power usage. On the nVidia side a GTX 1070 or 1080 is best.
But given the massive difficulty increase recently, tell your 'friend' not to waste his time as a single card mining is virtually pointless - if you want in to crypto, just buy the coins outright, getting ROI is nearly impossible now
ollie87 to Oneday77
12 Sep 17#18
Not likely, given the hashrate is only 12-14 Mh/s (even that is ambitious) and the power usage will be very high.

I'd be very interested in finding one. I've waited forever for Vega and after everything it's disappointed me massively (I'm an AMD fan). I just ordered a GTX 1080 so my 7950 will be ready to find a new home in a week.
