Sonoff are excellent. CE certified, I've only used the wire in one's, but they work as well as the TP link plugs I have for a fraction of the price

Do you need any extra hardware & is it easy to link to Alexa? Thanks
vaderag to col11
7 Sep 17#11
Nope - just link the app to the alexa app. I don't have the battery drain issue other user mentions btw and I use it for a lot of stuff - in fact, you don't even need the app running once set up as they connect to the cloud direct

They work well but the ewelink app for your phone to control them drains my battery by 7% over the course of the day sitting idle. Not just my phone as my friend uses sonoff too and he experiences the same battery drain. The reponsiveness is instant for on off but at the cost of high battery drain.

Got couple of the wired ones for heating and hot water never noticed ewelink app draining battery though You say its instant mine is once app loads but that takes little while maybe battery drain is to do with how app has set up on your phone . looked at power usage on my android phone ewelink app does not show unless used
seems good value but I'm not sure what I'd use it for. Any restrictions due to ampage or watts on this?

I am in the same boat as terriclarkfan...never used banggood before...went for extra 71p priority mail. Product cost 4.61£, I list this on ebay for £6.99 after fees and such i might make 1.50£ not alot but if you sold hundreds and had 20+ other products you can make a living, this is what dropshipping is, it basically send it out without a branded box and no receipt or invoice so the person receving does not feel annoyed he could of got cheaper

I really want one of these, but I'm struggling to think of a legitimate use for them that isn't just a "because I can" novelty use, Guess I could get Alexa to turn off the floor lamp instead of using my foot to press the button :joy:
barneyonion
7 Sep 17#71
I'm still playing with settings to try and get it to stop draining. I have a widget setup - button on android home screen that toggles on and off for one of my lights but my friend does not have this and still experiences the same drain. I experience the 7% drain from when I was using only the inline modules and then also with a combination of inline and sockets. I then adjusted the settings so that the app cant send data while on 4G so hopefully that will stop the constant communication between devices and phone which I'm testing at the minute. I would be happy to sacrifice responsiveness in exchange for no battery drain. Wemo doesn't drain battery at all but is a lot more expensive and a lot less responsive.

These are replacement light switches for the wall. I have previously bought the touch ones from eBay and have worked fine. These are touch with Wifi so you should be able to switch your lights etc on/off with a touch on the wall socket or by using the app/Alexa.

I'm pretty sure those light switches need a neutral wire and therefore are no good in most UK houses. I might be wrong though.

is the app safe, looking at permissions it needs to take pictures, record audio and control flash lights, once set up can i remove app and let axela control it
whelan189
7 Sep 17#104
on andoiid you can refuse it certain permissions, it asks for taking pics because you take pic of qr code setting up so disallowing it will be fine, sometimes apps dont work when some things are off so cant tell you for sure but most likley can

Can somebody advise what Sonoff product I need please. Basically want to control my ceiling lights so i can switch them on/off remotely from an app but also from a switch plate on the wall. I don't like the idea of buying smart bulbs as the should be consumables that you may wish to change if you decide to change light fittings etc. Sonoff seem to have a wall plate switch but i'm reading elsewhere that it wouldn't be suitable/safe for UK wiring (house built in 80s)

11 Sep 17#120
They're fused at 13A, but that's because they need to draw more than 5A, not necessarily because they need 13A. 10A will run almost everything in your house with no issues.
But the key word is safely - controlling a heater or toaster remotely is a recipe for a potentially deadly fire.
DingoDirk
11 Sep 17#121
True - which is why I've never understood why there's a picture of an iron on the Belkin Wemo plug box!
Controlling a 13A coffee machine with a 30 minute morning warm-up is okay or should be okay though.
I guess an oil filled radiator set to a lowish temperature would also be fine.
I don't understand the 10A rating though. It's seems to mostly be present on non UK made devices.
Where it becomes a problem is if you want to plug in multiple appliances to one socket adding up to more than 10A. Shouldn't do it but people do.

12 Sep 17#123
10A limit is likely to do with the fact that most EU countries provide 10A outlets for the most part (with only the odd ones rated at 16A in kitchens etc). Nobody is going to make a 13A version for the UK (requiring different relays for switching etc) when 10A EU versions will do the same job for 99% of uses.
I'd agree the coffee machine (likely 1000-1800W rating) is probably safe owing to where it's going to be kept, but something like an oil radiator, even set on low, is a very bad idea as you only need someone to cover it (drape a coat over it, or push it up against a sofa etc) and you have yourself a nice oil fire!
As for multiple items - 10A is actually a lot of current, giving you 2300 W to play with. If you aren't involving irons or other heating appliances then you're really unlikely to get anywhere near that kind of power. Maybe in years gone by you could have pulled that kind of current if you had a particularly impressive Christmas lights display, but with LEDs nowadays you'd have to be lighting up Blackpool to get anywhere near.

Turned up today and i ordered not long after this deal was posted so everyone hopefully should be receiving theirs soon  Not decided on Google or Amazon yet though so they won't be used for a while. Regarding the watts and amps debate, had a quick google and found this as a rough guide electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk/gui…gs/.
Seems that if you are sensible and don't go for a high rated appliance (kettle, heater toaster etc) you should be able to run a few devices from one wifi socket. I think my first attempt when i get around to it will be an extension lead running a TV, STB and a few consoles. Should be well under budget on both watts and amps.

Got 2 of these and set up the first one and seems to work fine with the app. One question. Those saying they are using it with Google Home or Alexa do you mean you need a device to do this? I have Google Home app which controls my Chromecast audio but can find nothing there to be able to control things like WiFi plugs. Do you need the Google Home bit of kit rather than just the app?
