what is so hard to understand?

the fact that I can hack the mini is one of the reasons I will go for this over a pi anyday, because I know I will be getting a true retro gaming experience

- nothing the pi offers will beat an official controller by Nintendo
- yes I know I can play ps1, n64 games on the pi but you know what? I dont care, if I I want to I can easily emulate them on my pc anyway. I only want snes games for my snes joypad
- its a charming little console. Looks great under your telly unlike the pi
- Nostalgia
- Its collectable and much more valuable than the pi

Oh. My. Goodness.

We get the message!

(A mini SNES still looks better and is easier to use than a Pi - for the layperson)

And it's "moot" by the way, not "mute"...

Agree, scalpers are just the worst. These will be back in stock in 2018, Nintendo have confirmed the SNES and NES mini will return to shelves. Please don't get ripped off by paying inflated prices to those who have knowingly restricted your opportunity to buy goods at RRP. Christmas, or birthdays will definitely not be ruined by a lack of Nintendo under the tree this year.

Picked mine up today. Very nice for £69, so tiny. Great fun being reminded of the joys/difficulty of Super Ghouls and Ghosts

So you're getting one then?
pazuzu17
1 Oct 17 #127
Still misunderstood.

I'm advocating getting a SNES Classic. Official, 100% legal - when not hacked, 2 first party absolutely boss controllers AND decent emulation to boot. Problem being fans aren't getting said Mini's due to scalpers/hoarders. I'm simply suggesting a good Pi set-up will offer you almost everything the SNES Classic does out it's box with added bonuses thrown in for good measure.

The legal aspect is mute because I guarantee 99% of those who own either a SNES and/or NES Classic either have it hacked or are considering it.

Mate. Just get a Mini.

It's only £70-£80 and absolutely rinses your current set up.

I know.

Because I basically used to use your current set up.

Hell... if you don't like it (you will) you can always sell it for at least what you paid...
pazuzu17

Say for arguments sake the Pi lags. If so it's not going to be noticeable for 99.9% of the population, the only ones who may notice any lag is competitive gamers. I'd be very interested to see Digital Foundry do a piece on the SNES Classic in comparison to a good Pi set-up.

30 Sep 17 #123
It’s also gone up to £79 instore so looks to be the standard pricing now :disappointed:
CaptainSocks
30 Sep 17 #122
I've got a very similar Pi set up myself mate. Had it for years. And it honestly doesn't get close to this. Open to offers if anyone wants to buy it. Redundant for me now.

And yes... it does lag compared to this. Very minor, but noticeable on many platform games compared to the original consoles.

This doesn't lag on those titles which is amazing.

I'd pick one of these up if you can and also google Hakchi2.

You can play every SNES game and a lot more besides on the mini, all whilst retaining its tidy UI.

Don't worry too much about the scalpers either. Loads of these due between now and Xmas and also loads after even if you have to wait.
pazuzu17
30 Sep 17 #121
Yes, it's an official Nintendo product, and for a fan like me that's king, but it is still emulation.
pazuzu17
30 Sep 17 #120
Ok, first, I've the NES Pi casing for my Raspberry Pi - nothing shonky about it as it's a near replica of the NES Classic. The iBuffalo SNES pad I have feel (for me) almost exactly as good as the SNES Classic pads. So, nothing shonky here. Second, the 'lag' argument is bogus and down to having a good setup vs a bad setup.

I'll say it again, the SNES Classic is absolutely the preferred method should you just want to play almost all of the best games released for the SNES during its entirety. However, the Pi is the way to go for those unwilling to submit to scalpers and for £70 you can be playing EVERY essential title released for the SNES.

The mini snes is a thing of beauty, but just been chatting to the manager of Game in Dover and some have been returned as faulty as the games don't start so if you get one check it before putting it away for Christmas to avoid Xmas morning disappointment.

I wonder if it'll remain £69 in store... probably not.
CaptainSocks
29 Sep 17 #112
So your options are basically:

Play SFIII on a shonky looking Pi with (admittedly very good) third party SNES controllers for £70. I've got a Pi for emulation. It's cool. But many games suffer noticeable lag.

Or:

Play all the SNES titles (and more) your heart desires on an adorable looking mini SNES with proper SNES pads that will also retain/increase its value for £70. Sure it's an emulator, but it's the most lag-free one I've tried (and I've tried lots).

Tough one but...

Not difficult. Youtube will sort you out.

Strange, you say you’re a massive nintendo fan but you seem to be advocating piracy! Then you say that this SNES classic, is not a legitimate Hardware, even though its been produced by Nintendo makers of the original SNES

29 Sep 17 #107
Maybe not look like a SNES Classic and 2 (good) controllers at £70, but a Pi 3 with 2 iBuffalo SNES pads you can get for under £70. Yes, it won't be the official item we all covet, but it will run SFIII Third Strike (for example). I'm telling you now the SNES Classic won't be able to do likewise based on the exact same tech as the NES Classic.
pazuzu17
29 Sep 17 #106
Depending on (reliable) sources people would tell you the NES Classic suffered minimal input lag and sound emulation issues.
pazuzu17
29 Sep 17 #105
People, people, THIS is running games via emulation. It is no different than what the Pi currently offers, minus that the Pi can also run many extensive-ish Arcade classics, PS1, some N64 and the like.

I'm a massive fan of Nintendo as my Avatar shows, but people are acting like the SNES Classic is legit hardware.
joanddan7

Whoop! Good news

I did read earlier its the same device....

Look forward to seeing videos of a hacked one.
mikeyfive
29 Sep 17 #103
Exactly. I know emulator fans will tell you how great their experiences are but I always find the games / controller's have a minimal lag.
I'll have to try to load all the other games you mention onto the SNES, is it a pretty straightforward task?

Or is there anywhere else online with stock?
CaptainSocks
29 Sep 17 #96
Yeah.

Smashes a Pi out the park IMHO.

You can already play every other SNES game/Megadrive title on them (exactly the same method as on the NES Mini - it's really the same device).

You'd be hard pushed to build a Pi that looks like a SNES with two controllers this good for £70 tbh.

It'll also lag on many of the platform games.
mikeyfive
29 Sep 17 #95
... Re. the eternal Raspberry Pi debate, these are far better in my opinion, authentic controllers, flawless HDMI upscaling and ROMs... and within a couple of weeks you'll be able to play every SNES / NES and every other console game when these are hacked.

I wouldn't pay scalper money for one though.

I just picked one up from my local Adsa, so this deal isn't technically expired

Nice to see Asda selling them at RRP as opposed to slinging an extra tenner onto the price like Argos, Tesco and Game, et al.

Really looking forward to reliving my youth with Secret of Mana and Yoshi's Island.

Thanks OP.

People, (again) a Raspberry Pi, I implore you. Don't stress, give in to scalpers and generally be on a wild goose chase regarding the SNES Classic. Sure, if readily available I'd recommend one in a heartbeat. It's telling that Fifa launched today and should you want a copy you have your choice via various outlets, if you want a SNES Classic however...

That's a shame, you were doing so well with the first two. Someone out there like you or your brother who wanted one will now have to go to ebay (perhaps even the one you sold) or wait for another.

Let's hope they are presents, because people who do this to make profit and deprive others of getting it for the right price are the worst kind of people on here. So weird that some of them are so proud about being shysters.
