Wow, here we go, I just presented you with your own quote saying ALL cities and you are still not big enough to hold your hand up.

I don't read newspapers or online news, you are obviously the sort of person that does and believes everything they read. Of course everything isn't fake news, but the journos love to embellish and make things up so gullible folk like you can spout BS on forums.

I thought you were not going to waste any more of your time? Yet here you are continuing to argue a point that you disbeleive, despite The Times and a respected motoring journalist stating it. No problem, I won't lose any sleep over it.

The Times has a paywall, dear. Nothing clever.

Did I say all cities? No.

Funny when I Google, I come up with multiple instances of such news here, here, here and here.

You keep believing what you want to believe. It personally doesn't affect me or my car, but it will affect others.

From your comments on here before, you will never admit to being wrong so I'm not going to waste my time on this one, our resident HUKD know all will always want the last comment in the belief they know everything. :unamused:

I can't find anything that backs up your comment above when you said all cities will be banned in Autumn 2019, it's just complete nonsense you have re-gurgitated from online "news" papers.

That's very clever linking to a newspaper article that wants me to register and sign up to view the article, which I will not do.

And as we all know how newspapers love to lie and tell us crap all day long, do you actually have any facts from the government to back up your nonsense claim that ALL UK cities will have banned diesel vehicles by Autumn 2019?

Strangely enough when I google your "fact" there is nothing listed at all, other than the eventual ban of petrol AND diesel sales in 2040. The only slight mention of 2019 is that the Mayor of London will ban them by 2019 and then in 2020 he MIGHT move the ban to the North Circular.

Which sort of goes back to my original post saying that for those of us nowhere near London it has no bearing.

Oh look, here is a part of another version of that article:

"Affected cities include Birmingham, Leeds, Southampton, Nottingham and Derby, which already have plans to impose toxin taxes on older lorries, taxis and coaches starting in 2019, but could extend the taxes to diesel cars as well."

"Plans" for wagons, taxis etc so nothing set in stone, and then "could" extend to cars.

It's all just guess work and nothing is set in stone so your scaremongering for people that do run diesels is just silly.

Hi Alacazam, Can I ask, was that a lease through VWFS? I am on my first lease with them and absolutely paranoid about where I park mine, etc coz I cannot afford to be saddled with a large damage bill at the end of the lease. It would re-assure me if you were with them as well as I am getting stressed out at every little scratch that appears in the lacquer, etc.

The Golf I had was through VW finance. Two alloys had kerb damage - no problem within limits so no charge, there was a deep scratch on the wing where a lump of concrete fell out of a tipper - charged £26.

It obviously doesn't have that never ending push into the seat craziness of the Golf but it's surprisingly nippy and nimble given how light the front end is - and much more frugal, I can easily get over 50mpg on a run.

Company car tax rates are set out for the next few years, with no announcement in the last Budget (I don't think) to change the current system. Sure the 3 per cent supplement on BIK tax may be getting scrapped, but company car tax rates will increase incrementally over the next few years for all fuel types. Local authorities are already looking at congestion charges in cities that will take a harder line on diesel cars (UK from Autumn 2019 on non-EU6 cars) or higher parking charges for diesels in particularly congested cities to help discourage their use. But unless you are doing more than 20k miles a year, I wouldn't go for a diesel. If you are a 40% tax payer, there isn't a massive difference with the BIK on the say a 2.0 TSI Octavia and a 2.0 TDI.

If you don't do the mileage and you are BIK-sensitive, perhaps choose a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV? Top-spec Outlanders would have lower BIK tax than diesel rivals. The only thing to consider with that choice is that the BIK tax for plug-in cars will increase more rapidly than petrol or diesel rivals over the next few years and your annual bill will increase at a steeper rate than for a petrol or diesel car, although will remain lower than them. Plus, you'd only get the fuel economy benefit of the PHEV if you cover relatively short journeys and ensure the battery is charged frequently as it only has a realistic EV range of around 20 miles or so.

But the point is petrols are not being banned at all. Diesels are, yet you still advocate them as if they are the future. They aren't unless you do 20,000 miles/year or more and/or need a very big vehicle such as a pick-up or a van and/or need to tow something

The Skoda Octavia S list price is £17,195. Haggle a £2,000 discount (mentioned above) so pay £15,195.

A quick search on the Skoda website and I found this 12 month old Silver Octavia S with 11,000 miles on the clock for £11,490.

That is a decrease in value of £3,705 in only 12 months.

Thank you for that comment, this is one of the values of HUKD - that one can garner opinions from others regarding important purchases.

I take your point about depreciation, it is a bit difficult to work out because almost no one pays the RRP to start with. For my Superb diesel estate (Elegance model) the RRP was £27k plus some change when I bought it 4 years ago, but I had negotiated the price down to £22k. It just had its fourth birthday so I got a WBAC price for it in case I decided to change, and it came out as £11.5k - which is where my calculation of it being worth 50% of its new value at 4 years came from (50% of the price I paid). If I had paid RRP then I think your figures would have been right - but as I said above, almost no one with cash will pay RRP for a common user car.

The long term rental market seems to be quite new (or perhaps I didn't notice it previously?), and now many people seem to be using it. I really do appreciate your comments about your experiences with renting and I note they have been favourable. I'm still mulling it over, but in my case I keep coming to the conclusion that my 4 year old Superb estate suits my needs very well - it does 50mpg, costs £30/year to tax, is cheap to service and can only depreciate by about another £8k if I keep it for to the 10 year point (or beyond). I'm still thinking about the renting option though. so thank you very much for your advice.

Most of that is correct. Except I have yet to see a Skoda that takes 4 years to halve in value. Even the Citigo seems to loose 45-50% of its value at year 3. That is assuming average mileage. If you are a very low mileage user then you may have a 10% or so advantage. So a 25% loss over 2 years seems pretty good. Plus on a sportier car, you get out of paying the new and more expensive yearly tax as well. There are lots of things to think about. But I am on my second lease car and unless I was buying something that I wanted to keep for a very long time; I will carry on leasing.

True but diesels are really a no go for many people - the cost of replacing the dpf flter plus other fiters is often so high that you need to be doing a pretty high annual milage to get any benefit....and no consisently short trips.

If you are happy to take a car without changing the spec, the best deal you will get is from stock specials. These are cars that dealers have not yet shifted, but are now happy to move on, and often at a significant discount. You get the car exactly as it is and can't change anything, but for a lot of people that is not an issue anyway.

WhatCar leasing often have stock specials. Always worth a look.

I went from a Golf R to an Audi A3 with this engine. Yes the Golf was amazing, for 1 percent of the time I was driving it, the rest was bumbling along in traffic or on the motorway in top gear like everyone else. So mid life crisis over with I got sensible.

This engine is so light it feels very nimble and quiet and is much cheaper to run. In fact it's surprisingly nippy.

Are diesels being driven out? Looking at my next company car, it's still cheaper for me to get a diesel (for the next three years anyway) than a petrol, plug in hybrid or hybrid. A lot less in it than last time, but will still be cheaper. And by 2020 they are supposed to be scrapping the 3%BIK surcharge on diesels.

Wow what a deal. Very well specced car for the price, even comes with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as front parking sensors and drive assist features. A friend of mine has a 2016 Octavia, it's a fantastic car.

In my book £4300 for 2 years of hassle free motoring is a no-brainer. Of course leasing is not for everybody, and if your budget is limited you could opt for a well maintained low mileage reliable car of a few years' vintage for cheaper and you'd be able to get some money back when you sell it.

Have some well deserved heat OP.

I have handed back three lease cars and have never paid a penny. You do see newish cars with big dents in them driving around and you think "why did you not claim that on your insurance?", so I would agree that these type of drivers should not go for a lease. Or if you live in an area where you know a new car will be deliberately damaged, but for most drivers this will not be an issue.

The guidelines aren't legally binding. You'd have to chance it that you have a lenient assessor when you come to handing the keys back. Having dealt with ex-company lease cars before i know some assessors will pick up on every detail then hand an invoice to the company.
Some are more lenient though like a Passat was missing some trim and had a cracked rear light cluster but it diddnt get charged for.

We see so many of these rental plans advertised here that it is hard to know what is a good deal and what is not.

With this one the cost is £4,334 to rent a £17,195 car for 2 years and 20,000 miles. That works out at 25% depreciation, which sounds reasonable until one realises that the new car would not cost £17,195, but probably at least £2,000 less (I negotiated £6,000 off my current Superb estate when I bought it new 4 years ago, so I think this is a reasonable assumption). In that case the depreciation is about 30%, perhaps that is still good? My current Skoda has depreciated to just about half its new value in 4 years, so perhaps a 30% loss in two is okay?

I'm rather thinking aloud here. I've always bought new cars for cash previously - and generally been able to save around 20% compared to the manufacturer's price (the exception being my Porsche, no discounts there!). These days so many people seem to be going for rental deals like this one, so I'm wondering whether I should do the same when it comes to changing the Skoda (or perhaps I keep it for a decade and amortise the cost over a decade).

My conclusion: I still don't know whether this is a good deal or not (either compared with other rental deals or buying new) - so I'll sit on the fence and not vote yet.

Lol 1L engine in the car like that? I bet it will go from 0 - 60 within a week or so
_sion to chris8888

IIRC it's 0 to 60 is just under 10 seconds. Seems reasonable for the money
M_z to chris8888

Size means nothing though! 115Bhp is plenty, I bet 0-60 time is around 10 seconds. More than adequate unless you are a bit of a boy racer.

These 1.0L triple cylinder motors, in the 115 bhp, go far better than you'd expect. You've obviously never tried one.

you do know engines are different now to a few years ago don't you :disappointed:

I already have a leased car and have leased previously with no issues.

For your information...

Looks a decent family sized car for the money, 115Bhp is plenty for everyday driving.
