If the caddy breaks can you just pull the drive and recover data or is it somehow encrypted??

No, unless you have encrypted it yourself, in which case, you’d have the encryption key anyway...

Doesn't PS4 only allow for 2.5" hard drives? Unless the hard drive in the caddy is 2.5".

No, you can use either, the PS4 doesn't care as long as it sees usable storage on the USB connection. I haven't tested it myself but you could probably even use a pen drive so long as it had sufficient capacity.
Of course, you can only use 2.5" inside and not even all 2.5", has to be 9.5mm or less, which sadly rules out a lot of higher capacity drives. IMHO Sony really should have made the space a bit wider to take 12.5mm drives when they did the Pro and Slim as a lot of the larger drives like 4TB simply aren't available in 9.5mm thickness....

If I remember rightly once is been formatted by the Xbox you can use it in the pc. Mines away being repaired so it's been a while since I checked but I'm 90% sure I've got MP4 films on mine

Thanks OP. Am I correct in thinking that you can't partition a drive to be used with xbox. I want one half to be used for movies and one half for games.
