Great deal if you already own the real tone cable, for example if you own the game on console and want to experiment with custom DLC

Yeah, anyone that wants to learn how to play guitar should buy this immediately. Don't listen to actual guitarists but instead, listen to novices that use this game to learn how to play instead. Best of luck...

Couldn't resist giving this a shot for the price, sadly it won't registered my semi-acoustic as tuned over microphone (when it is) so can't play just yet. Will try to borrow a cable off a mate that apparently has it and see if that's any better.

Personally i love this game, it's teaching me and training me to be able to play proper pieces.(eventually)
it's teaching me the ability to play chords, scales and other mumbo jumbo.
although i would rather learn with a tutor, i haven't got the money to be able to do so!
if anyone gets disheartened, remember you need to spend 10,000 hours to master something...but it only takes 20 hours to get the basics!

Had to log in just to post as this annoyed me so much. Rocksmith is an awesome learning tool. It tracks very well, you can loop, add difficulty or slow things down with no pitch shift. Making customs from the very same tab you would use on you tube etc is easy. It is fantastic
regarding youtube, awesome tool. I suggest Cifra Club (youre welcome) its the same as lick library. Also if you want a killer RS set up, use a floorboard and plug the RS cable into the fx send then the usb to the pc. Go into rs mixer and turn guitar 1 volume to 0. You now have a pedal board with your sounds and RS tracking notes (you are very welcome). Finally and not for the faint hearted I made a multi client asio driver so I can use the floorboard to trigger bias fx (vst) and use RS the sametime, my floorboard is full midi.
have fun ;-) thats what its all about.

I would avoid this if you're buying it to learn how to play guitar.

Why? I have wondered about getting it...

I bought this 6 years ago with the Epiphone Junior Guitar. I wanted to learn. I tried this for about 2 days and realised it is no use for learning. I sold it and bought a decent accoustic, loaded up YouTube and cracked open a beer. Learning curve is so much easier and enjoyable. YouTube is a font of knowledge.

It's absolutely awful, there's no structure, you're hitting random notes, out of time with the song also. As pillbury advised, check out Youtube. Justin guitar is a good place to start, free lessons for beginners and intermediate.

What the heck are you talking about? You're not hitting random notes, and of course it's in time. No you're not going to become an amazing guitarist overnight just from playing but it's a great tool to use alongside other resources. You're playing the actual songs. There are tons of mini-games that help you practice and remember all the chords and scales, making the process way more fun and immersive than it would be otherwise. It builds muscle memory and gets you used to moving your hands quickly and reliably - a difficult hurdle that beginners often get stuck on.
Justin guitar and other lessons are good recommendations but that doesn't mean you need to act like this software is trash - it's not; it's fantastic and personally I wish they'd make a new one.
There's a reason over 90% of the reviews are positive and most of the negative ones are just the typical 'I've played it for years, great learning tool but I can't get it to work anymore so I don't recommend it'.

I would highly recommend this game.
I approached learning the guitar in a similar way to touch typing, I wanted to be able to control what I was playing over being proficient at a few songs, and I think this game as worked wonders for me.
I originally bought this for the xbox 360, and the quality of gameplay was poor, the low processing power can't keep up with the notes you're hitting, however the tone cable also works on my pc, and the quality, although not perfect (you eventually end up knowing when you're wrong), is so much better than the consoles. There are one of two songs which its still poor on, but the majority of the time its perfect.
If you want to learn guitar, and find the initial learning curve hard, you tube videos slow, or just wanted a gamified experiance, I'd recomend this

Got this on the PS4 and the lag makes it unplayable. Might give it a go on the PC and see it it's bettter.
Yeah, as stated in the OP this is best for people who own the cable already. However this version can also be played using a microphone, though it's less accurate

is that because the additional noise on the line and the limited frequency response of dynamic mics? Or because you don't own a guitar and had a go at humming?

The former, but I really want to try the humming now
