What i will never understand is why aldi always sell the same size spanner set, common sense dictates that many who already own a set would probably buy another set if they were made up of different sizes

My local store at Hoddesdon has about 30 sets left. Now reduced to fiver!

So why....um. Let me get this straight, you recommend using them, then taking out a decent set of spanners to finish the job??
There seems a flaw in your logic: I just can't quite put my finger on it. :astonished:

Because ratchet spanners are far quicker to use, but non-ratchet spanners can apply more torque. So it often makes sense to use both. No logical flaw there.

I have done exactly that. But it means getting both tools, then in a usable position...you arent saving much time, and buying 2 sets you arent saving much money either. Sets by wera/bahco etc occasionally come up on the various eu amazon sites for a good price, though I'll admit, never for a tenner.
You'll never regret buying decent tools.

Waste of money, the ratchet heads break when put under a little strain. Halfords are a lot more expensive but at least they do last. Quality over a cheap product wins every time.

Any links to one that I could use to unscrew the oil filter cap housing?
Error when trying to order, multiple browsers, or could it be that they don't deliver to Norn Iron

 These tend to go a bit floppy on the adjustable part over time. Better quality ones would probably retain their adjustability. TOP TIP : I would use these for tightening up to a point and then doing the final turn with a rigid spanner or socket to avoid stressing the ratchet mechanism, or when losening a nut or bolt to start off with a rigid or socket so again not to stress the mechanism unnecessarily.

I've had no problems with mine over 2 years of good use and still in tip top condition, I do pull up with ratchet AND THEN use the open end for final nip. For these size use have to be careful not to over tighten so open end is good enough.

The first thing that came to my head when I saw this was, "are they as good as Halfords ones?"

eatmorefish - Cheap ratchet spanners won't last if you start applying lots of torque to them. Either buy expensive, very good quality ones or do what ianhalling said.

Thank you - I winced the other day watching a buider ratcheting a bolt to it's tightest turn with an Aldi ratchet spanner :astonished:

I bought a set of Halfords ones a few years ago. I then bought a set of the Aldi ones about a year later to carry about in my van. Both sets get about the same use.
Two of the ratchet heads fell off theAldi ones in less than a year so I had to drill bigger holes and tap and die a new bolt to hold the ratchet heads.
I'd save your money and buy the Halfords one's personally.

yeah, no comparison between Halfords and Aldi spanners IMHO. I find cheap ones have poor ratchet mechs too.

Workzone gear any good? Always need spanners for work, mainly 10 & 13mm.
