They missed a massive opportunity by not covering Scottish premiership teams. The Rangers fans would have bought about 50,000, many other teams would have bought some as well, but their 'Old Firm' friends across the city would have bought hee haw. The great sadness (cancer) of the west of Scotland.

23 Sep 17 #36
I sometimes wonder if Remembrance Sunday has become something it was never intended to be when it was conceived. It's a day where people honour and pay tribute to the fallen soldiers in the First World War but that's not in the name. Isn't remembering it for a horrific waste of human life on all sides better fitting? Is that what the white poppies are about?
Blasphemous to thomasleep
23 Sep 17 #37
Where is this 'great poppy debate', is that in your head?

"Fashion Accessory or Fitting Tribute"... I don't suppose the British Legion care much, no harm in someone wearing as a 'fashion accessory' the money goes to the cause whatever your reason for buying.

There is no debate when you're not willing to enter into one. If you go back and read what I wrote, you'll see there's a question mark there, it's a question... is this 'great debate' in your head? I'm not convinced by your premise that there is some 'great debate', you've taken exception to that view and lowered yourself to attacking with your 'clown' comment. I never said at any point that there isn't a 'great debate', perhaps I posed the question in some way that you felt uncomfortable with? You've moved your stance in your reply of course... apparently I said there is no debate but want to enter into a debate... the 'great' debate now demoted to simple 'debate'. If someone disagrees with your stance on something then they will/should give their reason for that disagreement, that's not entering into a 'great debate' or other at that point, it's simply an alternative view.

If you want to debate your premise and/or my view that there is no harm in poppies being worn for 'fashionable' reasons, I offered my view, again, you attacked that view with your 'clown' label rather that trying to engage. I'll try again, whether my view engages you and/or a debate is formed, is of course... debatable.

My father fought in WWII, Special Air Service, the charity means a lot to me and my family. It's a good thing of course that the Poppy Appeal lends some weight in giving a 'nod of respect' toward those who died, are still suffering/serving but that is secondary, generating income is the main focus of the charity, they wouldn't create and sell merchandise if it weren't. As such, if someone buys and wears (or doesn't wear), some form of Poppy Appeal merchandise, the charity really won't be too concerned. Personally, my family and I buy multiple poppies/other merchandise every year but like many other people, we also drop a few coins in the collection boxes when out and about without taking a Poppy... it's about money. The charity needs money to keep going, to support it's causes. I'm sure many would like the Poppy Appeal to have some profound impact on how people think but I'm also sure many won't care whether someone wears a Poppy (or other forms of merchandise), as a symbol of respect and/or some sort 'fashion accessory' as you put it. Indeed, if the Poppy is 'fashionable', it could be argued that that is a good thing for the charity as more revenue will be driven. Further, why can't charity merchandise be a 'fashion accessory' as well as a form of respect? The crucifix is the most recognised symbol across the world, it is worn as both a mark of respect and fashion. In some cases, it is worn by people of religious belief as both a mark of respect and fashion. Back to charity though, some people may give to the charity but not wear a poppy for some reason... they simply don't like the poppy symbol, it's not allowed in their place of work, they don't wish to put a pin through an expensive shirt... whatever, it's their choice... a choice that ironically, some people have died for to give them that choice. I really don't see a 'great debate' though over the symbol and how its purchasers/wearers choose to wear it unless of course it is disrespectful ie burning etc.

That's my view, it may prompt you/others to reply, if a debate ensues, that's a good thing as it is again, something people have died for to give us that privilege. Whatever the outcome, this is HotUKDeals, hardly the arena of 'great debate'.

Classic whataboutery. What does the IRA have to do with James McClean wearing the Poppy? The truth is the poppy is a show of support for the British Armed forces, the same armed forces who gunned down 14 innocent and unarmed civilians on the streets of his city. Of course he isn't going to want to wear it. Bringing the IRA into the discussion for some bizarre reason simply shows you're unable to debate the issue and are frantically trying to change the argument. My advice is to stop digging
PhilK
24 Sep 17 #95
Cut the innocence.
You know damn well where his rabid anti poppy stance is based
Chasloyal
24 Sep 17 #96
Just those 14 'innocent and unarmed civilians' were used as cover by Provo snipers so anyone with even the slightest bit of basic intelligence is well within their rights 'bringing the IRA into the discussion'.

What was the IRA doing whilst the British Army was dying in the poppy fields of Flanders again? Oh that's right, they was attacking a few geriatric old bill and half a dozen 14 year old conscripts at some Dublin post office over the Easter Bank holiday!

Shall we move on to WW2 and what the IRA was doing whilst the British Army was fighting Dritte Reich Deutschland? Erm that's right, their commander in chief Sean Russel was dying on Nazi U-boats whilst busy aiding that Third Reich German war effort!

Away with your feeble attempts at grabbing the moral high ground because you ain't got none!

JonnyIrish
24 Sep 17 #99
Yes I do know. He's a man who doesn't want to show support for the British Army, in the same way millions of Irishmen don't. He's perfectly entitled to not wear a poppy if he doesn't want to. They died in WW1 for our freedom so you HAVE to wear a poppy, bit of a contradiction there do you not think. Take your jingoism elsewhere
Chasloyal
24 Sep 17 #100
I totally agree with you that he's perfectly entitled not to wear a poppy so don't play in England taking the Queen's Shilling then!

Just play for some third rate 'anti establishment' filth like the Bohs, the terror apologists from the Eastend of Glasgow, the soap dodging dregs from the Reeperbahn, Livorno, Aris, Osasuna or any other number of vermin clubs like those I just mentioned then.......very simple don't you think?
JonnyIrish
24 Sep 17 #101
I see this argument bandied about a lot and it's idiotic. Is wearing a poppy a prerequisite for working and earning money in England? I work in London and have never worn a poppy, same as millions of other English, Irish, Scottish etc. So far in my three years here I've never been asked to leave the country for the lack of a poppy but if that changes I'll let you know
Chasloyal

If I took a job in Saudi I'd not kick off about Mrs Loyal being expected to wear a head scarf, if you come to work in England don't kick off about being expected to wear a poppy......it ain't rocket science!

As a footballer he has untold options to play for clubs who have obscene bigoted 'leftist' yet nationalist leaning hierarchies and following that are compatible with his beliefs so he should join them!

It's unbelievable how the club has grow in the space of 1 season. Though your team will always be your team when you're not anywhere near it you may as well show an interest in someone local. And being someone who has lived in quite a few far-flung places I see nothing wrong in 'supporting' the/a local club a bit. Ironically enough we moved in to our new gaff up here the day Lincoln were away at the goons in the quarter final of the cup, how I wanted to see you's turn them over that day

I work with an Imps season ticket holder, right nice lad he is and I have said I will pop down to a game or two with him this season, anyway been down there and all sorted.....

Added to the football selection that gets worn rather than the ones that were bought as souvenirs for the collection

Dream on. I am not stupid, and have lived in the west of of oor we country for very many years. Have loads of friends and acquaintances who are tims, not one of them would be seen dead with one. All due to your daft allegiances to all things from the bits of Ireland's past that you choose to want to remember, and link yourselves to. All sane people would have moved on. We get non stop IRA songs from you lot, and similar silly songs from your bigot brothers on the other side of the city. Non old firm fans are sick of it all.

Sat amongst the green dregade proudly wearing that 'bloodstained poppy' on your hoops?
