Went into currys to get a 55" B7V, but saw this and thought it was an amazing price.
It is NOT on the website, but stores still have stock!
Item 164094

5 Year warranty.

Arguably the best 3D TV ever made.

I also used a 10% StudentBeans TV Discount, and used 8% discount Currys gift cards from my work, to make the TV £1664

Shocked that you got such a bargain. Well done!

Don't regret buying back then though because it has been great.

Is this curved? It's a great deal but not sure how I feel about a curved TV.

Don't get hung up on this. Yes its curved, but its very subtle, (less than Samsungs,) and doesn't make any difference at all. If you put the TV at the correct height, you can't see the curve at all.

Great price. As you say, the best (or rather joint best) 3d TV money can buy, and will likely stay that way for the next few years.

It's the technology the display uses such as LCD - OLED is currently the best type of display (blacks are very black, TVs are very thin and use less power.).

For £2k you can't get better IMO.

Having said that I went for a Samsung QLED) a type of LCD) as they are brighter and cheaper (well it was when I got mine).

How the TV displays images, what technology it uses to do that. For instance CRTs used an electron gun and phosphors that glowed when struck by electrons at the front glass. These days we basically only use LCDs which act like a stained glass window, you shine light through from the backside and the LCD panel blocks any light other than whatever you wanted displayed. LCDs are cheap and were pretty bad originally but we've fitted better backlights that produce more colours and now they're pretty good, except they can't display a true black (they don't perfectly block colours) and they can't be that vibrant if the backlight isn't producing strong light in a particular colour.

OLED is closer to old plasma technology where each pixel generates its own light meaning you can display an absolute black and colours can be extremely vibrant, all good stuff for picture quality. OLEDs are not cheap to produce but they're better than LCD.

How can a TV be so expensive and seen as such a good deal! I mean... I'm actually tempted by this but something's telling me it's just crazy. Yet many just take it in their stride... I imagine it's really much better than my 10 year old LCD TV that cost £400 at the time, but can it really be £1600 better?

Edit: Don't want to seem like an old man, it's not that I see this as a bad deal, I voted hot. I'm just amazed that we're still spending this much on TVs
Masteryates to soap_box
11 Sep 17 #44
If you are someone who watches only 30 minutes of TV per day, deffo go for the cheap LCD. For me, my TV is probably the most used appliance, I'm using it for at least 4 hours per day. As I'm looking at this for such a long time over the next say 5 years, it makes sense that I'm looking at the best, cheaping out on other appliances that I use less. For me, this TV is easily worth the extra £1600.
CampGareth to soap_box
11 Sep 17 #46
It's a deal because it's a good product at a good price for the product. As for whether it's £1600 better that depends entirely on whether you can afford it. A 65" TV is genuinely better vs a 32" or even a 50" TV, and OLED is genuinely better than LCD. So you'd buy the 65" OLED if you could afford it, but the 32" LCD if you couldn't.
collectorcol to soap_box
11 Sep 17 #59
This is cheap. Around 16 years ago I spent over £900 on a 32" Sony TV that needed 4 people to move it.

65" would be far too big for my room, 55" fits perfectly.

Masteryates to Redfaction
11 Sep 17 #72
Just go for one of the ISF modes and turn all of the processing/motion options off. The panel also does this clean up after something like 50 hours which makes the picture better. Then just tweak the colour/constrast/brightness/OLED light settings to your own preference. If you enjoy the 2D/3D conversion mode, (I do,) make sure the 3D mode is Cinema.

last year I was purchasing a sony 65" tv in currys and was interested in LG oled, they had them on the show floor but it seems not much attention was paid by the sales reps as they mentioned the price was way too high for it to be worth looking into and would be for a long time to come. I paid £1600 (close to £2000 with guarantees and extras) and thats just under a year ago and now there is an oled selling for roughly the same price, honestly i'm shocked to say the least. This deal is brilliant would get it in a heartbeat.
Mentos to XXXIshaqus
11 Sep 17 #71
Bare in mind this is clearance, the new models are still pricey.

Having said that, the B6 and C6 did hit ~£2500 a few times whilst still the current model, so yes street prices have fallen fast on OLED's provided you time it right. There's a OLED prices thread over on Avforums, according to that the 65C7/B7 can be had for £2700 which explains the £2k price for this one. Problem is no 3D on the 2017 models and Mrs really wants 3D

YouTube is also a good place for settings.
Each panel behaves slightly different so tweek until it looks good for you.

As far as I'm aware the 'clean up' happens after 3 hours of viewing and takes 7-8 minutes once in standby. The TV makes a noise once complete.

Don't you mean better than LED?.

The tech evolution has gone: CRT > Plasma & LCD (market share) > Plasma discontinued > LED (1080p)> QLED (1440p) > OLED (4k).

‌ :nerd:
CampGareth
11 Sep 17 #87
Eh? No I don't.

By time it's been like this:
CRT -> Plasma -> LCD with CCFL backlight -> LCD with RGB LED backlight -> LCD with White LED backlight (blue and yellow mainly) -> OLED -> LCD with Quantum LED backlight (stronger colours)

Shining light through liquid crystal has been a thing for about 20 years now, the only difference is the backlights have been getting better. CCFLs dimmed and didn't live that long, RGB LEDs were expensive, blue+yellow=white LEDs were cheaper but worse, Quantum LED is back to Red Green and Blue but with the efficiency of the blue+yellow style.

Picked up a brand new boxed 65C6V from Telford tonight. Bit concerned that it's going to be too big for the lounge moving from a 42" Plasma but surprisingly my wife was all for it having called into a local store to size up a 65 incher ! The only two issues that were making me pause were slightly higher lag than B6 and C7/B7 plus potential issue of HDR game mode being a bit dim. However, a 65" oled for price I was considering paying for the 55" !

The PC World / Curry's buying experience was ... interesting but navigated safely with 6mths BNPL too.

As someone whose has demoed nearly every 3D TV in the last 5 years, I'd say the LG OLEDs are the best 3DTV's by a significant margin. The Panasonic Plasmas were the best Active shutter 3DTV's but still not as good as passive OLED. If you look on the AV forums C6 owners thread, there are plenty of former plasma owners who state that 3D is significantly better on the C6.

Spoke to Guildford, unfortunately it has issues and not sellable :disappointed: They looked up a few other stores and so far only damaged/faulty units left. All seem to be customer returns of display.

Oh and to answer my previous questions:

1) They will deliver.

But

2) You have to go into store and pay. As they are display/open box they need you to sign off on condition. Which I guess is fair enough.

- Guildford has display unit, but has screen issues.

- Woking has return, but has an issue so can't be sold.

- New Malden has display unit. Been on 9 hours a day, no apparent issues. Debating if its worth it.

Probably best to call and see your local stores. I'm North of Guildford so they found alternatives in my direction. Maybe some others will have some closer to you.

When the first passive screens were 1080P you could see horizontal lines as 1, 1080P screen can't display 1080P for the left eye and 1080P for the right. The 4K screens however have enough pixels to deliver 2 1080P images on the same screen. This problem therefore is entirely eliminated.

I believe theres a 5 year warranty, so that affords some peace of mind.

But you're right, £2k for an ex display thats been on for the best part of a year is a lot of money. Particularly when the 2017 models have been dropping so fast. Wouldn't be surprised to see the B7/C7 hit ~£2k by Black Friday. Its only the fact Mrs wants 3D that has me considering a 2016.

I have an order placed on the C7 with richer sounds for 2850 as currys are doing £100 off on their website and richer sounds said they'd beat that by £50 and also offer an extra year warranty over the 5 currys do. Now i have a couple questions. Is this a good deal or is it worth waiting till black friday? Is this deal mentioned in the post even better? Ive not read much about the tv but i saw one instore in manchester today and it wax ex display and had lines on it all over due to a faulty panel? Put me off completely. And finally i have an LED lit x9305c that im upgrading from but that has the magnetic fluid speakers which i love but someone offered me £1400 for it and i couldn't say no. Is around £1500 more worth upgrading to a c7 or even £500 more for a possibly used/faulty c6?

C6 Pros

£1k cheaper if you can get student beans code
3D capable

C6 Cons

You may have to take display unit
Curved
The 7 Series units are dropping in price fast and purportedly have better screen uniformity

If it was me and I could find a new C6 for £1800 (net £400 after you sold your old set) i'd go for that. Or I'd wait a few months if possible as most think the C7 series will drop to ~£2k by the end of the year (possibly black friday). On Avforums I believe I read they had already dipped to £2500 once.

I certainly wouldn't spend the best part of £3k on a B/C7 right now unless I was desperate for a TV.
sami_pingu
13 Sep 17 #120
Appreciate the reply pal. Im not really in a rush tbh pal but the problem is the c7 has very limited stock everywhere at the moment and nobody is beating £2850 so it's made me want to commit. It is the 65 inch one btw and the longer i hold onto my tv the more I'll lose as come black friday every one will want a new tv bargain not a used one so I'm really unsure. My mind was set on the c7 but im having second thoughts now due to the price and whether it's really worth almost double the price of my current set which does have It's issues - the main one being DSE and banding lines down it which i assume i wont get with an OLED? Either way I have till Tuesday to decide.

Tried to find one this morning in Kingston Park, Newcastle.

The salesman checked for me and then claimed the only ones left Nationwide are in DUMFRIES and KENDAL.

Hope this helps someone...

I just managed to pick up an ex display model from currys Telford got 10% off student beans and 10% off employee discount costing me £1600. TV is in brilliant condition no scratches or marks and came with its original boxing and cables etc. Also purchased accident damage for it incase of that screen burn In the next year which only cost £5 per month

Got an ex-display model in Nottingham a couple of weeks ago for £2500, after staff insisted there were none left in stock nationwide! :rage:

Anyone know of anywhere which still has any? Cambridge store non in stock. The salesman did say to watch out as they cut the power to the tvs there rather than turn off which can cause screen burn. Apparently they take time to turn off.

Wanted to say thanks for this OP - I managed to snag an ex-demo set from Staples Corner this afternoon. Been so happy with the 55" LG OLED from 2015 (1080p) really wanted a 65" 4K but with 3D but couldn't stump up £3K for one. I managed to get it for£1,950 - not quite your sale if the century but good enough for me. The picture quality is out of this world.

Big thanks to OP and then rubyHammer for the other tip. After giving up trying to find the original OLED I managed to pick up the better OLED65E6V not far from
me. Got the 10% student beans discount plus redeemed some Barclays reward points and got 62 £10 evouchers (tedious in store as had to manually redeem each one). Walked out parting with just over £1100 for a TV that cost £5k less than a year ago.

62 vouchers! Poor salesman. I can get £500 vouchers.

Was it a display model? By evouchers you mean the gift vouchers? I think the Mrs gets them at discount through one of the NHS schemes aswell,

Damn, have I missed out on being able to get a OLED 65 3D TV now?

Cant seem to find any and now not on Richer Sounds or Currys. Guess that's money saved. Just really hope they bring 3D back as want an OLED, but having followed this range would feel like I'm paying more for less with the 2017 range....tsssk :0(

That's exactly how I feel - paying more for less. But I'm resigning myself to the fact that 3D is dead - I think when they excluded it from the UHD BD spec that was that.

i bought an OLED65C6V from Currys Staples Corner last week for £1,950. It was ex-display but I figured it was the last chance saloon for 3D. Ended up taking it back as it had horrendous screen burn. Real shame, as passive 3D with 1080p for each eye was glorious. So I'll probably end up getting the OLED65B7V but as you say, it feels like paying more for less.

There is only one 3D TV released in 2017 that I'm aware of but it's a nasty Panasonic LCD active shutter affair.

BTW ao.com have a 10% off code for 4K TVs that runs out at midnight tonight. There's also 2% Quidco on LG TVs from them bringing it to £2,515 for The OLED65B7V but looks like you only get 12 months warranty. If I see a similar deal with 5 year warranty I will bite.

I feel your pain, Mrs loves 3D and won't be happy when she finds out next TV is unlikely to have it

However, whilst >2017 we lost 3D I wouldn't say you're paying more for less. From the threads/reviews on Avforums it appears there have seen advancements in consistency, screen uniformity and low IRE detail. Mind you at current prices i'd still save the best part of a grand and grab a 2016 if I could find a new one
